I like Libre Office, and find that it works very well indeed. Here are two suggestions that others have not made yet:

For Word Processing, Atlantis Word Processor is excellent:

For a suite, you could check out SoftMaker Office. I am not a heavy user, but have found it able to read and write to any files produced by the MS Office Suite. You can instal the modules that you want. There are Standard and Pro versions, plus new, free apps (Word Processing, Spreadsheet and Presentation) for Android devices. And a set for Linux.

    • in reply to: Security alert: Remove Java from your browsers #1398100

I am a bit confused by the stream of Java Updates, and whether or not to disable it.

Today, I installed (updated) Version 7.0.250 on Win XP. I had disabled but it is used for webinars that I have to attend from time-to-time. Enabling and disabling it is a hassle, and I would prefer the thing just to work. (Apologies for perhaps being lazy, or wanting to limit my time to doing things more productive or enjoyable!)

Is it now OK to just have it there, or is it still necessary do disable it and use it only when required?

Yes. Ditto jr213’s comment. You can really scamper around a lot of junky places on the Net should you just Google it. FantasticFreeware is the Home Site of the program.

It is very easy to use. Just be aware that when you Click on “Purge Print Jobs” it will clear out the whole shebang — just the particulr job that is blocking the queue. All the rest of the print jobs in the line-up also vanish. But it doe warn you itself, so you will not be surprised.

Whoops! A bit of a problem with the HP (surprise!!)

A 64-bit driver seems somewhat difficult to find. Here is the link to the HP discussion list on this particular issue:

You should install the Win 7 drivers for the printers. The HP driver can be found here, the Samsung driver here, and the Xerox driver here.

Thank you very much. I couldn’t ask for more!

    • in reply to: What e-mail client are you using? #1196092

Pegasus has been around since 1990 and led the way in the introduction of many of the features now taken by granted in email clients. It is still under development by the original author, and although it is still free, users can contribute financially for its continued development. I has a users forum (quiite recently started) on the web, and has a dedicated band of very knowlegable users who respond to questions of all sorts on the Pegasus Mail Discussion List (a listserv at bama.ua.edu).

I have used it for years, and although it is a bit quirky it is a brilliant piece of software. I have looked and used (from time to time) many other email clients, but none can match Pegasus.
