    • in reply to: Upgrade Procedure of the Past Question #2410491

My main PC runs Win 10 w/21H2 that just came thru for me. I have been running that PC with windows updates managed by GPE. As soon as I have some time, I will fix the Windows updates on the laptop as a priority.

On my older laptop that I just passed on to a family member, I used the Winaero Tweaker to fool around with Windows and it was a fun, effective way to adjust Windows the way I liked it.

I was thrilled that the upgrade to Pro worked. I didn’t want to think about having to call Microsoft for assistance with activation. I had major changes made to my tower PC and attempted to go the ” I have made hardware changes” route in Windows and couldn’t get the OS to activate. I had to call Microsoft and they did the remote thing and couldn’t fix it. They apparently questioned my credibility and asked for a copy of my motherboard purchase to verify what I had told them. In the end, all was resolved, but it was a tough road I don’t want to go down again.

      Anyway, all is well.

Everything worked out for me. I used the product key from Win8 Pro. The OS upgraded to Win10 Pro and Windows is “activated with a digital license”.

    • in reply to: Cannot fix DNS probe error #2394823

      I will answer both OP’s.

Alex-the DNS setting I use is my ISP’s DNS. at least that’s what I can tell from my network properties. I don’t use a VPN. I have never changed DNS servers, so I will research how that is  done.

I response to guest poster, my router is a Netgear Nighthawk; I got the firmware notice upgrade three days ago and that’s when the problems started. I am grateful for the link and will go there to see if that is what I am experiencing. Thank you so much.

As I scanned this group further I see others with issues with Netgear’s updates.

Unfortunately, I still have the error. In many cases a refresh of the web page will allow a connection to the website. If anyone has any suggestions about how to clear this error, I’d appreciate the assistance.

    • in reply to: Cannot fix DNS probe error #2394687

I rebooted the router and modem and I still cannot connect to many websites without getting the dns probe finished nx-domain error. Sometimes refreshing the page works and other times not.

I don’t know what else to try…problem in all 3 browsers.

      _______________

After I wrote the above, I tried restarting DNS cache in services and it seemed to have resolved the issue somewhat. I hoping it does because I’m running out of ideas.

    • in reply to: Question abt converted MBR to GPT boot drive #2391649

Your post is very impressive, however in light of the fact that my junk partitions are very small and everything is working just fine, just call me chicken…..besides there are some things I am not good at…mucking around in the BIOS and hard drives and partitions.

Just doing the TPM, MBR to GPT and then Secure Boot was a major accomplishment for me. There are some folks here I’m sure will be willing to go for the junk partitions, but I for one recognize my shortcomings and there are a few. 😉

    • in reply to: Floppy Drive help #2380984

      Thank you both for answering.

We tried tried to format a blank floppy but  a message popped up that said “Windows could not complete the format”.

The disks spun their enclosures, so that wasn’t an issue.

What we did was brought out a spare laptop with Windows 7 and the drive functioned perfectly along with all the ancient floppy disks. The disks and drive also work in an ancient PC in our basement that hasn’t been turned on in years that has Windows XP on it.

Win 10 must be too good for likes of such old media…..;-)

At least we are able to check out the disks and make sure there’s nothing on them that we might need or don’t have.

Before today and my accidentally reading a post on another Windows forum, I never knew that such a use for a router and external storage even existed.

I have a late model Netgear router which I have apparently under-utilized. Thanks for the informative post.

    • in reply to: Edge update changed home page-not really #2368186

Automatically fixed for me this AM with no further action on my part

    • in reply to: Correct my own email address #2322520

      Thank you all so much.

I read the Autocomplete Other Suggestions article. It kind of didn’t work for me because “outlook didn’t cooperate” & I didn’t have a Recent People section show as the article indicated. I really didn’t want to get into the registry for such an issue that isn’t a real problem now that I know its there.

I have both Outlook and Outlook Live on my desktop now and can use either one at will. The incorrect one on Live is gone.

      Appreciate the help. Happy Holidays!

    • in reply to: Correct my own email address #2322261

Well, I used the cursor keys and got the incorrect address highlighted, and still could not delete it. Tried both shift-Del and Del neither of which did the trick.

I figured out why I couldn’t delete it. The Outlook mailbox that I opened a long time ago and sits on my desktop looks totally different than the one that opens when I use Edge to look in my email box using that browser. I was able to delete the misspelled email address in the newer version of Outlook but not in the old one. All the info that’s in the older copy of Outlook is in the newer version that is much improved.

The email with the incorrect address is in my sent box and it didn’t bounce so some unwilling soul got the email. The “typo” is second on the drop down list. I had already tried hitting the “delete” key no joy. I went back to the drop down email list and did the shift delete key thing and nothing happened. The first address on the list is the correct one that was hi-lighted along with the second incorrect one also hi-lighted.  I suspect maybe that’s why I couldn’t delete the the typo.

    • in reply to: Correct my own email address #2322244

I don’t mean to sound like a dummy, but a long time ago, I created an Outlook mailbox and I’m thinking, I just went out on the web to the M$oft site and created it there. I don’t know where the Outlook mailbox is hosted. I don’t want to delete the account either..there’s nothing wrong with the account. It’s just my typing went awry when I put in one of my other email addresses to send stuff to and I messed it up. I accidentally sent something to the address with the typo and realized after looking why it never arrived.

It’s not a major problem and nothing is wrong with the account. I know how to edit incorrect email addresses in my address book, but this messed up one doesn’t appear anywhere in my contacts/address book. Iwent to settings and couldn’t find anything that would show me the misspelled address.

    • in reply to: Win 10 & my Old Toshiba Laptop #2307209

Update went off w/o a hitch, but have been at it since 9AM. I see no hardware problems, Device Manager shows no yellow things so I guess I’m home free until the next go round. Didn’t need the hotfix after all. Interestingly, Nvidia control panel sports the current display driver ver. 342.01 which is the one from 2016. My video card is a GeForce 330M.

Can’t complain about this laptop and the good service it’s provided me all these years, nor can I complain about Windows helping me to keep it running for over a decade.

    • in reply to: Win 10 & my Old Toshiba Laptop #2307048

Thanks for the info; will backup and then give the hotfix a try; the last time Toshiba provided a display driver was 2016(for my 10 yr old laptop 😉
