Win 11: Just drag it to the taskbar. Or right click on the desktop shortcut and then click on “Pin to Taskbar”.

    • in reply to: How can I install Skype on Windows 7? #2770491

This Microsoft website says:  “Skype will remain available until May 5, 2025, giving users time to explore Teams and decide on the option that works best for them”.

That may be why you’re unable to install Skype.

    • in reply to: File Naming Conventions (including Folders) #2757232

I do sometimes use spaces in file names, and the spaces haven’t caused problems.

I backup the actual files rather than create zipped archives.  Storage media is so inexpensive these days that I don’t worry about file size.  And I have never tried to measure the tradeoff between the added time for copying larger unzipped files versus the time to create the zip.  If the environment were business rather than personal, I might pay more attention to storage cost and time.

    • in reply to: File Naming Conventions (including Folders) #2757038

For files like bills and statements that I don’t intend to share with others, may I offer a few rules that have worked for me:

      1. Well named and organized folders and sub-folders are the key.
      2. File names are less important than folder names.
      3. If the source of the file (bank, brokerage, medical provider, etc) includes a date in the name of the file I download, keep that name. As long as the date and other text in the filename are understandable to me, I don’t worry that the naming format of one bank etc is different from another bank.
      4. If the source of the file does not include a date in the name of the file I download, I rename the file immediately after downloading to begin with an 8-digit date in the format yyyymmdd. Remember, of course, that single-digit months and days must always be preceded with a 0.
      5. For income taxes, for files I may need to give my tax advisor I always include in the file name the tax year and my name.
      6. Make regular backups of your data files to two external devices. For me, regular means immediate (daily).  I use a file manager rather than Windows File Explorer.  My file manager has a system for synchronizing directories.  Old-fashioned batch files work too.  These backups are in addition to disk imaging.

    • I don’t use the Outlook calendar, but I do import and export contacts sometimes.

To export, Open Outlook, then File > Open & Export > Import/Export > Export to a File > Comma Separated Values.  Save the .CSV file.

Then to import do the same thing in your new Outlook 2024*, but instead of Export to a File use Import from Another Program or File > Comma Separated Values, then choose the .CSV file you had previously saved.

*I haven’t used Outlook 2024, but this is the way I have done it with previous versions.

      Cheers, Paul

Sorry to hear that.  I tried my suggestion on my Windows 11 Home 23H2 PC and it coughed up my Office 2021 product key.  Fingers crossed that Rick Corbett’s suggestion works for you.

I found this online and it seems to work:

Press Windows + S to open the Windows PC search.
Type CMD and open a command line as administrator.
Use the command “wmic path SoftwareLicensingService get OA3xOriginalProductKey.”

    • in reply to: The Casio question #2750405

I think some of the confusion between Ori and Kato may be related to the wording of your question.  You asked:  “Who is the president of Casio US, and what is the US headquarters’ mailing address?”

Note that you did not ask “who is chairman” or “who is CEO”.  You asked for “President”.

When Ori was appointed in 2021, Casio’s press release announced his title as “President and CEO”.

      https://world.casio.com/news/2020/1225_personnel/

Kato’s title is “Chairman and CEO”.  Not “President”.  I can’t find Casio’s press release, but their website says “Chairman”:

      https://world.casio.com/corporate/profile/directors/?form=MG0AV3

So when you asked Copilot who’s the President, it found a direct word match in Ori.  I suspect that if you had asked “Who is the CEO of Casio US”, Copilot might have responded “Kato”.  In many companies, Chairman and President are different individuals.

Those with more AI expertise than I might consider:  Should Copilot have recognized the date difference, noticed that Kato is a newer CEO, and used its artificial intelligence to, at least, explain the terminology difference to you?

You can also do this in Windows Settings, without a third-party program:

Time & Language > Date & Time > Show time and date in the System tray TOGGLE ON/OFF

    • in reply to: The mustache question #2746324

Since Co-pilot answered the question and Bing didn’t, my view is that Co-pilot did a better job. Co-pilot always seems to add a follow-up question to its answer. Perhaps that’s just a way of churning out more activity for Co-pilot.

I have been testing Le Chat AI, an AI query service from Mistral AI, a French company. https://chat.mistral.ai/chat I asked it these four questions and received what I think are clear, accurate, and comprehensive answers:

Which islands did columbus visit on his second voyage to the new world?
Which islands did columbus visit on his third voyage to the new world?
What are the main canary islands?
      Who was Henry Watterson?

As for the mustachioed President question, here is Le Chat’s response (again, in my view, a clear and accurate reply):

The last U.S. President to have a mustache was William Howard Taft. He served as the 27th President of the United States from 1909 to 1913. Taft was known for his distinctive facial hair, which included a mustache. After Taft, no subsequent U.S. President has worn a mustache while in office.

    • in reply to: Formula to Automatically Calculate Dates #2745331

      One way to do it:

Format the cells in a column as a date.
In the first cell of the column (say cell A1) enter the starting date in your list (say 02/04/2025).
Then in the next cell in the column (A2) enter =A1+7.
Then copy the contents of A2 (=A1+7) into the next 50 cells in the column.
Each date should increase by 7 days.

      Don,
I use both old Outlook (for my main email account) and Outlook New for my other two email accounts. In the pic below [SEE EDIT] Outlook New is the left icon and old Outlook is the right icon. When you hover over the Outlook New icon, the tooltip is “Outlook (new)” as shown. When you hover over the old Outlook icon, the tooltip is “Outlook.exe”.

EDIT: Sorry, AW won’t let me add the pic for some reason. The two icons are different, though not dramatically so.
