    • in reply to: Router as repeater WPA? #1197145

Why is the speed cut in half? As long as the repeater is able to repeat faster than your PC can send/receive data then you will see almost no degradation.

Here is a simple guide. Not sure it’s all that you need.

RR, what have you not yet found on the web?

    • in reply to: Networking #1197141

I don’t think you will have much luck. I suspect the military have good comms but personal comms will remain very poor for quite some time.

    • in reply to: Delete stubborn files #1197139

It may be a Root Kit virus you have. These viruses hide files from Windows to prevent deletion.

I suggest you run HiJackThis and post the result on an HJT web site – there are a few good ones about.

    • in reply to: DMAin XP #1197138

The hard disk controller is the only thing that may use DMA. It is determined by the age of the machine and the Windows driver.
I would not change it if it is working correctly, you may cause data corruption.
If you really want to change it, open the properties on the ATA hard disk controller and view the Resources tab.

Assume that somebody manages to hack into your network and then guesses your logon name and password for your computer. They are then in a position to steal your identity, install key loggers and collect your banking details, or spam the world from your computer.

Even if you have no money and don’t care about being cloned, the police will make your life hell until you can prove it wasn’t you and you don’t need that sort of hassle.

    • in reply to: recovering the unrecoverable #1196979

Windows changes the directory entry for deleted files, it doesn’t actually delete the file.

There are a number of un-delete utilities you can use to attempt recovery – none are guaranteed to work. Backup, on the other hand, is guaranteed to work.

    • in reply to: Dead hard Drive… Data Recovery Help #1196938

I would not attempt to boot from that drive at all, only connect it via a second cable or a USB enclosure, then attempt to copy the data off. This prevents data corruption.
If the drive really has died you can probably have the data recovered by a professional recovery service – not cheap.

p.s. I have 3 Seagate 500GB drives and all were piles of ordure until I updated the firmware. Now they are perfect and my data no longer corrupts all the time.

    • in reply to: Laser printer drum damage #1196937

Replace the drum is the only answer. The sticker will have ruined the drum surface and it will always produce dodgy images where the label was stuck. (The drum causes the toner particles stick to it by static electricity and they are then deposited on the paper and melted into place by the fuser.)

Maybe the house wiring is really dodgy and it’s the house that’s dangerous, not the power supply.

    • in reply to: PCMCIA pc card type I or II for laptop graphics #1196935

PCMCIA slots are slow in terms of graphics performance. You are stuck with the on-board card.

    • in reply to: Email Forwarding #1196934

Can’t see an easy way to persuade Atmail to do what you want – can’t see an easy way at all.

To make the email look like it came from the original sender you need to save the body of the email, probably as text, then send it on using Blat or similar and set the sender to the original sender instead of you. This is a slow and time consuming process and requires you know your SMTP server and are handy typing commands at a DOS prompt.

      Sample Blat command line:
      blat messagefilename -s OriginalSubject -t yourclient@theirmail.com -f originalsender@originaldomain.com -server yoursmtpserver.com

Note: this wont work if your SMTP server requires you to authenticate.

      cheers, Paul

      [Edit] Fixed Blat command line.

    • in reply to: Strange thing with IE version #1196929

Seems IE6 was hiding under the covers waiting to surprise you. ;-))
Not sure what you can do except re-install IE7.

      cheers, Paul

    • in reply to: Server Hard Drive Cleaning Question #1196928

Bill, you just need any old copy of Windows XP to create the BartPE CD.
The BartPE will have SCSI drivers built-in because it uses the XP drivers.

I use BartPE all the time to image PCs at work – it’s great.

      cheers, Paul
