AskWoody PlusIn other words, the patches are only applied if and when needed. I have the Pro version, but I began with the free version which worked the same way for me for the 0days, and from time to time a pop-up on the bottom right of my computer screen will let me know if something new has been downloaded or applied.
One thing – the shield on the console has a column titled “Status” which should list the patches that are enabled and ready to go.
also:
Open the Log and see if any patches were applied. There are no notifications about updates.

AskWoody PlusWhy does 0patch Console show “Patchable Modules” and “Relevant Patches”, but no patches are applied?
Mitja Kolsek – Today at 13:56
When 0patch Agent is installed, and whenever it downloads new patches, it scans local drives to find “Patchable Modules”, i.e., the exact executable files for which one or more patches were written. The result of this scan is reflected on the “Patchable Modules” list and “Relevant Patches” list.
However, because 0patch does all the patching in memory only, a patchable module has to get loaded in memory of some running process in order for its patches to get applied. Scanning for patchable modules is only done so that the user (or the computer’s administrator) is aware which patches are there waiting to be applied as needed, even before they are actually ever applied.
This was taken from 0Patch FAQs – maybe it helps?

AskWoody PlusIf you see the green 0 in your taskbar, then 0Patch is running. Looking at the console dashboard there is a slide on the right that is labeled Agent Status Enabled. If you have it in the up position then it should run at computer startup and continue running. You should never have to run it yourself unless the 0 in the taskbar turns orange/yellow, which means it has stopped auto-sycing for some reason and you need to resync it on the console (only happened to me once or twice). It takes care of everything itself. Well worth the money for the Pro version, at least for me and my husband.

AskWoody PlusLongtime 0Patch Pro user here. If you look across the top of your open console, click on the shield which will show you your downloaded patches. Further along, across the top, click on the clipboard and there’s a log of what’s been downloaded and, if need be, applied.
All the way on the right across the top the X will close the console but not stop it syncing. It should appear in your taskbar as a green oval 0 – as long as it’s green it’s syncing. You can reopen it by clicking on the green 0.

.NET Framework 4.8 – KB5004116
and W7ESUI_0.3
Windows Monthly Rollup – KB5004289
Service Stack Update – KB5004378
I installed these updates on two Win 7, SP 1, x64 machines with no problems.
Also – a very quick set of updates compared to the last few.

Since you installed 0Patch (Pro?) you should be Group 0P. No need of any of Microsoft updates, A or B.
I do have 0Patch Pro and have continued with group A based on this info from opatch:
“As long as original vendor’s security updates are available and free, we recommend applying them as quickly as you can. Monthly Windows Updates, as well as any other software product’s updates, often include fixes for vulnerabilities we don’t have micropatches for…” https://0patch.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360018988493-Can-0patch-be-used-as-a-substitute-for-Windows-Updates-
I was hoping that I was better covered.

AskWoody PlusMay 12, 2021 at 4:21 pm in reply to: USERS ONLY Standalone installer script for Windows 7 ESU, regardless the license #2364562Installed April rollup kb5001335 using W7ESUI 0.3 on a Windows 7 Pro 64bit SP1.
Had installed .NET 4578977 v.2 and 4600944 v.2 previously with no problems at all (manual restart) but skipped the March rollup to avoid the printer issue.
Kb5001335 caused my computer to repeatedly and quickly fluctuate CPU from 10 to 45% or so (when it usually runs under 5%). I rebooted twice restarted completely twice but it didn’t settle down. Finding no other reason save the April rollup, I uninstalled it. Now all is back to normal.

AskWoody PlusMarch 22, 2020 at 6:52 pm in reply to: Comments on Abbodi86’s Win7 ESU Installer Script (2020 Archive) #2210020I have been using 0Patch since 11/18/19, my husband about a month after. We both are on Win 7 Professional 64 bit SP1 computers, I am i7 6700, he is i3 4130. We both were group B until January when we had to install the rollups in order to assure that 0Patch would work properly.
Acting as guinea pigs for the 0Patch people on the board, and as per this link from 0Patch saying that it was not an issue to use both 0Patch and ESU at the same time https://0patch.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360011192299-Can-I-use-0patch-in-parallel-to-Windows-Extended-Security-Updates– I installed abbodi86‘s script and then the Feb. Security and IE updates today.
Installation went as described and both of us have had no problems at all. 0Patch is still working as expected, too.
Thank you abbodi86 and thank you everyone in this conversation who made it easier for me to give this a try.

AskWoody PlusI have had 0Patch installed since 11/18/19, updated the Microsoft January updates at the end of January (.NET, Security and Quality, and Servicing Stack – prior to that I had been Group B) and, since I had been a Firefox Beta user, had already run into the crashing issue earlier last month. I had reverted to the Firefox release version at that time and solved the problem.
Today the problem recurred with Firefox’s update to 73 (64bit). I implemented the Command Prompt fix (linked below) that was given in the blog post on the 0Patch site (and was also sent to me as a paid user), which solved the problem while they work on a redesign so as not to conflict.
As an added benefit, I was able to return to Firefox Beta and am now running 74.0b3 with no problem. I still notice several 0Patch micropatches being implemented as necessary so everything seems to be functioning as it should.
For me uninstalling 0Patch was not necessary.

AskWoody PlusDecember 23, 2019 at 3:35 pm in reply to: Worth considering: 0patch for Win7 after January 2020 #2022679Looong time lurker, never poster, and often user of advice (firmly group B).
I installed 0Patch (and updated to Pro) based on what I had first read here and before I was aware of this thread. It’s been running faultlessly for a month. After reading that we needed the rollups to get the micropatches I sent Mitja Kolsek my own question quoted below:
“I have for many months been installing the security only versions of the Microsoft updates rather than the entire rollups, plus other necessary updates such as servicing stack, malicious software tool, and .NET updates. Will this cause problems receiving the micropatches and if so, how do I work around it?”
He quickly returned with this answer:
“mitja.kolsek@acrossecurity.com (0patch Help Center)
It is important that you have the exact version of executables (EXEs, DLLs) on your Windows 7 to have our micropatches applied. Our basic requirement is that you apply the latest Rollup (from January 2020). It doesn’t matter if you then turn certain features on/off, such as the telemetry feature from October updates, but you’ll need to apply that Rollup.”
Hopefully that is of some use to those of you considering 0Patch. I’m still on the fence, and have a second computer that will need some solution as well as the one I put this on to test.

Patch reliability is unclear, but widespread attacks make patching prudent. Go ahead and patch, but watch out for potential problems. |
