AskWoody LoungerDecember updates installed ok. Installed KB890830, KB4530734 first – restarted but didn’t get a double reboot. Then SSU KB4531786 was offered and installed it. Went ok, but the download for the SSU took forever. Restarted after SSU.
On Jan 14 it’s EOL for Windows 7, but is that also patch Tuesday, with one more update?

AskWoody Lounger@pkcano I’ve never seen my system do a double reboot before. Does it happen automatically or do you have to click restart first?

AskWoody Lounger@paul-t thank you I will definitely give serious consideration to upgrading to Win10. I will post in a new topic if I do. I guess I’d have nothing to lose once Win7 is out of support anyway.

AskWoody LoungerThank you, @paul-t I have thought of this too, but feel overwhelmed by so much discussion here about its problems.

AskWoody LoungerThank you for this suggestion. Win8.1 may be what I can work with.

AskWoody Lounger@greatandpowerfultech thank you for the suggestion – you’re very kind to think I might be capable of using Linux. Compared to everyone here I am very non-techie. I’ve never before installed an OS from scratch so I’d be doing everyone here a favor by not attempting it
. Before I retired, most of my job positions required using Windows so I’m not used to much else, except for iOS. I just like Win7 a lot and that’s the reason for my reading Askwoody.

AskWoody LoungerThank you @Microfix for verifying this. Now I have to really decide what to replace my old laptop with, a Mac, Chromebook or what. As it is though, I basically use my current laptop like a Chromebook, just doing everything with Chrome. But I guess this a different topic for another thread somewhere.

AskWoody LoungerForgive me, I can’t remember if this was addressed before, but will there be one more Win7 update in January before its end of life?

AskWoody LoungerOctober 2, 2019 at 5:43 pm in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: Get your September patches installed — but stick to the mainstream patches #1971931In my Windows Important Updates, I only see the September Security rollup KB4516065, September Security Update KB4474419, and the September Security rollup for .NET. It’s ok to only install these important updates then?

AskWoody LoungerDoes this apply to all the September patches?

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 9, 2019 at 9:09 pm in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: Time to get the August 2019 patches installed #1946040After reading all the angst filled posts about BSOD problems and advice on how to prevent them, I thought my best option was to install the August updates one at a time. So I installed KB3133977, KB4474419, KB4512506, KB890830 separately and rebooted each time after an interval of time. So far all seems ok. I have a 10 year old HP Compaq laptop Win 7 SP1 Home Premium 64-bit (group A) that I’d like to keep running for at least until next January.
Thanks to everyone here for all the helpful advice and sharing! -

AskWoody LoungerAugust 13, 2019 at 9:11 pm in reply to: August 2019 Security patches: It’s a biiiiiiiiig month #1907625I have Symantec (Norton? Is it the same thing?) also and I haven’t been offered the August monthly roll up either. When it is offered can we assume the problem is fixed? DEFCON status notwithstanding of course. All I see in WU is a whole lot of drivers labeled optional.

Patch reliability is unclear, but widespread attacks make patching prudent. Go ahead and patch, but watch out for potential problems. |
