    • in reply to: Policy for Internet Radio & Videos? #1117376

We do not have a written policy regarding this issue but we do inform new employees when they are processing in that streaming of audio/video is not appropriate for our work environment. We do send out periodic emails to all employees “reminding” them that they are not to listen to internet radio or watch internet videos at work. This activity does impact the available bandwidth resulting in lost productivity as accessing data across the network is slowed down due to the streaming.

    • in reply to: Which LCD 22′ monitor to buy… #1107635

We used to procure ViewSonic LCD’s for our employees but after having issues with several displays and very poor service getting the displays repaired/replaced while under warranty we switched to Dell. You can get a 22″ widescreen for between $290 and $340.

We have lots of the Dells on our desktops and they perform very well. No issues (knock on wood) with any of them.

    • in reply to: Excel or Machine (XL2003) #1093739

I have a colleague who has asked for a new computer as her current machine tends to take forever when running various Workbooks she has developed. Her current machine is a Lenovo ThinkCentre M50 (8187-D6U) running at 2.66GHz with 3GB RAM. One of the WB’s she has issues with is 18MB in size. There are 4 sheets in this book containing 51 named ranges. This table lists information from the WB:

Sheet Used Rows Used Cols Charts Cells in Used Range Formulas
      1 24,000 30 0 722,970 239,653
      2 19,000 51 6 971,652 39,151
      3 16,000 54 6 871,776 35,557
      4 6,000 24 2 162,336 35,502

IMHO, it is not the machine that is the issue but the Workbook itself. Would purchasing a new dual-core machine make a difference?

      EDIT: corrected misspelling

    • in reply to: What’s a good monitor to buy? #1087427

I work with Excel alot and a 17″ monitor would be too small for my needs. I would suggest a 19″ Dell at the least. I run two 20″ Dells.

    • in reply to: what is ‘new fonts’ message (Excel 2002, SP2) #1006939

One of my office mates just ran into this issue. As per the MS KB article 215573, we created a new key in the registry to disable the Auto scale setting and ran the VBA code given in the article to programmatically disable Auto scale on all existing charts in the workbook yet still received the error message.

I Googled the error string and found several references to “charts with titles”. I had her go through her workbook and remove all titles from her 50 or so charts and the problem is now gone.

    • in reply to: #DIV/O Error Formatting (Excel 2003) #1001804

ISERR will trap any error value except #N/A
      ISERROR will trap them all (#N/A, #VALUE!, #REF!, #DIV/0!, #NUM!, #NAME?, and #NULL!)

without having looked at the spreadsheet, why not use radio buttons in lieu of checkboxes.

Both IrfanView and Gimp have filters that allow for images to be manipulated as desired. Gimp is a very powerful program and is open source – FREE.

edit: they are both free programs

    • in reply to: On Line Training (2000) #940532

I have found that I learn best by doing. When I hit a roadblock on something that I am working on I read thru my manuals, come to the lounge and search on a topic, Google a topic, search various web sites (Walkenbach, Pearson, etc). Is there anything specific you are wanting to do / learn?

    • in reply to: File rename in VBA (EXCEL XP) #933863

IMHO, the Call keyword is something we should always use. It is not necessary and the code will run just fine without it. Using Call makes the reading and troubleshooting of code easier, especially when, a year later, you go back to something you developed and you are working thru the code to modify it or to see how you did something.

      Yep…. ment my military left.

You would think that having experianced basic training (albiet a long time ago), one would not mess up on what way is left and which is right.
