AskWoody LoungerIf you want to stay away from Google, AnyDesk also offers a simple, free, and no-frills approach to remote access with a tiny (3.2MB), portable executable.
I’ve just used AnyDesk very recently when TeamViewer decided that trying to remote into my brother’s PC was ‘commercial use’ (?!?). It worked flawlessly without any of the nonsense of having to have an account anywhere or the risk of Google data scraping.
Teamviewer… A good product with absolutely horrible subscription model. Log Me In used to be great, then they axed the free model. I’ll look into AnyDesk.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 24, 2020 at 8:03 am in reply to: Patch Lady – uh best to be on guard while surfing #2298591It’s also easy to get stuck in a loop when these kinds of malicious sites hit you. The default behavior of mobile browsers, for whatever stupid reason, is to reopen the previous page if the app has been forced to close. Seriously, WHY?
I’d say it’s better to first try to close the tab in question to prevent this from happening.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 23, 2020 at 10:12 am in reply to: Patch Lady – why can’t Surface devices have the BEST experience? #2298383We briefly tried the Surface book internally in our IT department. There were too many cons for us to consider rolling them out beyond that. Many of the same complaints you have are shared by us. The biggest issue is the scaling problems that come with an ultra high resolution tiny screen when you dock it to 1080p screens. You’re forced to log out/in again to ensure all apps look good. The contacts on the detachable tablet get dirty and need cleaned to prevent the keyboard/gpu from disconnecting when you move the lid, and my Marvell wifi sometimes isn’t recognized for 1-2 minutes after boot. Those are just the ones I remember
If they made the screen a standard res, ditch the gimmicky detachable keyboard, and revise the wifi hardware it would be a great machine.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 17, 2020 at 1:16 pm in reply to: Keizer: PatchLady: Win10 upgrades aren’t worth the effort, per poll #2297061Not surprising at all. The effort + risk of rolling out two major OS updates per year isn’t something I’m excited to do with my 90 clients, and we’re a smaller organization.
I’d rather they do a feature update every 2 years, not 2 per year. Just keep the security patches rolling in long term and we’re happy.
