Waiting for more reports of problems or success till next week. A search pulled up a lot of problem reports. If it doesn’t look better by next weekend, I’ll do another start pause to skip this update. Update problems are far higher risk than malware attacks in my experience. YMMV!

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 4: 24H2 is a work in progress #2715382

Start-Stop method: Search update to pull up windows update settings, Click Resume updates, immediately click pause updates ..for Win10 keep poking the button till max weeks, For Win11 use drop down menu for max weeks.

      Hope this helps.

I’m more risk/complexity averse than most since I’ve had more problems with boloxed updates than viruses and Avast handles the latter.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 4: 24H2 is a work in progress #2714804

Scrolling thru the posts I see a couple who’ve updated without issue, but the vast majority are discussing complex issues and problems. I’m going to use the start stop method to skip this update and hope for a clearer path next round.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 4: Dual-boot computers now safe to patch #2707976

Applied Sept updates to 3 Win10 desktops and 1 Win11 laptop without adverse impact.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 4: Dual-boot computers now safe to patch #2706806

I haven’t seen anyone comment on having done a regular, non duel-boot related update without issue so I’ll wait till next weekend to see if folks are are aren’t having problems.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 4: Side effects for dual booters #2700802

Updated 3 Win10 Pro and one Win11 Pro without incident after skipping prior month update.

No dual boot or other complications.

I post this because I appreciate when others post their updating success or failures.

Pioneers wear arrow shirts…appreciate their sacrifice.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: Secure Boot triggers recovery keys #2693463

Paused all PC’s till 9/9/24 after creating restore points. Too confusing. Will wait for clean update.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: Secure Boot triggers recovery keys #2692202

I went to settings, searched for bitlocker, clicked on manage bitlocker: 3 Win10 Pro’s didn’t have bitlocker enabled but the Win11 Pro did so I disabled it.

Someone asked if it was safe to patch if bitlocker is disabled. I’ll wait to see if there’s an answer and if not will skip this month.

      Patching shouldn’t be this difficult.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 4: May updates ready to go #2676837

I appreciate users posting experiences on this board. Given the negative stalls, I’ve decided to start/stop/Pause to skip the May update. The likelihood of a PC being bricked by a Microsoft update is, IMO, way higher than an attack by a threat actor exploiting a vulnerability over a month.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 4: Safe — for now #2666089

Updated 3 Win10 & 1 Win11, all Pro, with Apr patches. No problems seen.

I post this because this is the type of post I look for when new patches show up. If I see a bunch of posts like this, it confirms the Defcon rating. OTOH if users are talking problems & complexity, I delay till next month.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 4: A “sort of” quiet February #2644266

I’m reading so many problems with Feb. updates that I’m just going to start stop pause updates on all PCs till next month [again..did this last month] and hope Microsoft sorts it out by then. You’d think with all this AI they could get this right..unless it’s intentional to get ppl to buy new PCs.
