About
Been in IT most of my life. Started with DOS 3.3. Mostly desktop support and helpdesk. Some C programming, some SQL database querying. I've written lots of documentation and help files. In 2017 I switched from Windows to Linux Mint as the primary OS I use at home. In 2018 I set up Windows 8.1 (with Classic Shell) as a VM within Linux, and I upgraded to 12 GB of RAM. I now switch back and forth between Windows 8.1 and Linux Mint. Around 2022, when Windows 8.1 went out of support, I installed an additional hard drive and installed Windows 10 on it. I have three hard drives installed: one has Linux Mint, one has Windows 10, and one has my data. To switch between Linux and Windows, I power down, turn off one OS drive, turn on the other OS drive, and power on. The data drive is always on, making it easy to share the same data between the two OSs. In 2024, my Windows 10 hard drive died. I moved my data drive to a separate Windows 10 computer, and it became my file server. To get to the file server, I use Microsoft Remote Desktop from a Windows computer, or Remmina from my Linux Mint computer. Opening a remote session on the file server also allows me to run a Windows session from my Linux Mint computer, in case I need to run a Windows-only program.
