AskWoody PlusJanuary 4, 2023 at 3:25 pm in reply to: “Windows backup and restore” and “Create a system image” different results #2514740I have made a system image both ways. That is what started this. I expected them to be the same size and they are not. See original post with attachments.

AskWoody PlusJanuary 4, 2023 at 12:33 pm in reply to: “Windows backup and restore” and “Create a system image” different results #2514701When I use Windows built-in system to back up my computer on my Easy Store external drive, I set it to back up files from C and D and make back up system image.
The files and folders are listed under PC-WIN10.
The system image is under Windows Image Backup>PC-Win10>Backup 2023-01-01
I always thought these were two distinct things. I did not think that the system image backup contained files and folders. I thought it was just a system image.
BTW if I mount the two system images I have to see what I have won’t that install them. I am afraid to mess up what I have.
Thanks

AskWoody PlusJanuary 3, 2023 at 4:00 pm in reply to: “Windows backup and restore” and “Create a system image” different results #2514418Paul,
Thanks for your response. Size is the difference I am referring to.
Files are backed up separately and I can click down through the folders and see a file. But finding a specific file would be very difficult and laborious.
But the system image is backed up separately and stands alone. So I don’t know where the extra KB’s come from.
Any ideas where I might find out.
Thanks

AskWoody PlusSusan,
So, I was in another post and it was recommended to use either InControl or your reg keys but not both. I found this out after I had run InControl. So, I installed your reg key to “To reset the values – and blank out the version”. What I got did not look like your example at https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/6000003-registry-keys-and-group-policy-settings-to-select-specific-feature-rele/.
Then I ran InControl again. It flashed red and said I was only partially in control, so I clicked to take control again. So, then InControl changed the registry keys back to what they were for your settings to hold at Windows 10 22H2.
Discussion starts here: https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/so-how-do-you-get-to-21h2-without-22h2/#post-2497269

AskWoody PlusI just ran InControl. It flashed red and said I was only partially protected and needed to change two keys. I clicked to get control and it set the keys back to what they were using Susan’s reg key for holding at Windows10 22H2.
Looks like if you clear the keys, InControl puts the settings right back.

AskWoody PlusThank you for your response. My sfc and DISM scans are also clean. And the errors are not being logged in my Reliability Monitor, which is clean and shows no errors.
My Windows Home version does not have Bitlocker, so I got KB5012170 when offered on 8/23/2022 (I missed the warning, thought it was all about Bitlocker which I don’t have) The only other thing downloaded 8/23/2022 was Servicing Stack 10.0.19041.1852.
These errors began in my event viewer the same day, 8/23/2022. At that time, I was on Windows10 Home 21H2. The errors continued after 12/7/2022 when I downloaded the enablement package and I now have 22H2.
I don’t think KB4023057 is the problem either. That has been on and off my computer several times over the years. I got it again 12/7/2022 and went to aps and uninstalled it. These errors continue whether the ap is installed or not.
I can get along without Microsoft Account Sign-in Assistant. I use a local account on my Windows 10 and my Microsoft Office Home and Business 2019 works without signing in. It just does not sync with my Microsoft Account which I don’t want or need. And I don’t go to the Microsoft Store. Mostly I just need to remember to turn the sign-in assistant back on if I do need my Microsoft Account.
Well, it might be better to just let the errors roll along rather than disable the log or disable the account sign-in assistant. I don’t know.
I actually found some discussions about this from last Spring. It’s been around for a while.
Thanks again for your reply.

AskWoody PlusWell I uninstalled kb5012170 and nothing happened. I mean literally nothing. The error is still populating my event viewer.
Autopilot.dll WIL error was reported.
HRESULT: 0x80070491
File: onecoreuap\admin\moderndeployment\autopilot\dll\dllmain.cpp, line 191
Message: NULL
As far as I can find the only thing that shuts down the error is disabling Microsoft Account Sign in Assistant. I’m not the only one who has had this error pop up, no one knows any other solution.
I think this is one of those nonsense errors in the event viewer and am considering just disabling the log. As you can see from the attachment there are four sub logs. The Admin, Autopilot and Diagnostics logs are blank, empty. Only the Management Service is recording errors. No one knows why. Maybe I could just disable that one?
What do you think?

AskWoody PlusJust want to be sure. InControl says it sets like 6 registry keys. What if one of them is
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpd
and I use the key Susan provided to reset the values and blank out the version. Might that change the InControl setting I just applied?

AskWoody PlusI’m making an image back up now as I do every Sunday morning. I will try uninstalling kb5012170.

AskWoody PlusIs it safe to uninstall kb5012170?
I get 2-3 dozen entries for this error every 24 hours:
Autopilot.dll WIL error was reported.
HRESULT: 0x80070491
File: onecoreuap\admin\moderndeployment\autopilot\dll\dllmain.cpp, line 191
Message: NULL
I can stop the error by disabling Microsoft Account Sign in Assistant in services, but then I can’t sign in to my Microsoft Account or the Microsoft Store.
https://www.thewindowsclub.com/autopilot-dll-wil-error-was-reported-in-windows
I almost never do either and I have a note stuck on my monitor base reminding to enable it if I ever want to sign in to either.
Some places say it has to do with an enterprise account. I have Windows 10 Home 22H2. It is a desk top computer and lives at my house. I have never been connected to a school or office or any other remote connection. In fact, Windows 10 HOME does not support remote connections.
This error appears to have started August 23, 2022. This coincides with the date that 2022-08 Security Update for Windows 10 Version 21H2 for x64-based Systems (5012170) was installed.
The error has continued the same after I recently updated to 22H2.
This update, kb5012170, still shows on my list of updates. Is it safe to just uninstall it?
Thanks.

AskWoody PlusGo to:
Settings>Update and Security>Windows Security>Vitus and Threat Protection>Current Threats>Protection history
If nothing is there click on Filters>Blocked actions and clear all checkmarks and it will appear.
If your ap is there click on it and then click on actions and you can allow it thru without disabling Reputation based protection.
The list of previously allowed aps is here:
Settings>Update and Security>Windows Security>Vitus and Threat Protection>Ransomware protection>Manage ransomware protection>Allow an ap through Controlled folder
There is a list of all aps trusted and previously allowed. Unless you have never allowed any trusted aps through before.

AskWoody PlusI just posted above https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/rollback-to-21h2-from-22h2/#post-2504287.
I did not see this. I guess using (KB5015684) is why there is no Windows.old.
I have no trouble but what if I do need to go back? What do I do?

AskWoody PlusYesterday afternoon I used your registry key to change 21H2 to allow and stay at 22H2. Windows did not update on its own and I was going to just wait but then this evening I found this link here and used it. https://catalog.s.download.windowsupdate.com/c/upgr/2022/07/windows10.0-kb5015684-x64_523c039b86ca98f2d818c4e6706e2cc94b634c4a.msu
I now have Windows 10 22H2 as of 5:30pm.
This evening at 6:00pm I also downloaded your registry key to extend roll back period to 60 days.
I am having no problems but something has gone sideways with recovery. I searched for windows.old file on my C drive to see if it was there and it was not found.
So I went to settings and Recovery reports PC updated more than 10 days ago, see attachment, but it hasn’t even been 10 hours.
I have no idea what happened.
