Congrats Fred! I have been following you since the nineties. At that time, I used an internal modem at very slow speed. I’ve learnt so much from your articles wherever and whenever they appeared. You have been a great teacher! I loved your Langa Letter and also later your contributions in the free newsletters. Thank you so much for sharing your deep knowledge.

With today’s patch Tuesday, it appears that the issue with jscript.dll is gone. I ran sfc /scannow (admin) and it reported no problems as opposed to earlier checks. Checking the CBS.log also did not show any issues. Let’s hope it now resolves updates like in my post no longer will break down. Thanks to all who tried to help.

To inform: the spotlight issue has been resolved. However, I do not know how. I used Powershell last night and and did a few things with ist and all of a sudden the issue was gone. What led to it, no idea!

However, the jscript.dll issue still exist, kind of hidden, since there was no update for NordVPN. Have to wait and see for patch Tuesday, which hopefully resolve that issue too.

Correct myself from previous. I never used the workaround or knew about it. So, will not try it!

Have no image back up of a time before the issue occured. A complete reinstallation is out of the question. Such an effort is in no relation to the problem.

I gave it Full Control, then used cmd (Admin.) and regsvr32, failed with “The module jscript.dll failed to load.” Followed with a longer text and “Access denied”.

Please, take it that I disagree with the “minor”. Any annoying things that happen and have grown on MS’s ignorance as I call it, are not minor. Ok, I do hope as said here that the next Patch Tuesday will fix the issue. I can wait.

Thank you. However, I was logged in! Not sure what happened.

Hope to get a good reply to solve the jscript.dll issue.

Good article! But, I tried to get into my own MS account to heck out Privacy. I could not get in!!! The process asks for a code, which I have. I was only able to enter 7 digits, then it stopped. In MS’s email for the code they do not explain how to enter it: uppercase or lower case with or without dashes. I am simply stuck at that point. I guess it is one of MSs numerous flaws, since MS lost its grip on Quality!!!

    • in reply to: KB3201845 – is it OK? #1586923

Yes, I had a problem after the update on Dec. 9th. I observed that all of a sudden connecting to websites was very slow. I ran a speed test (have cable), download yielded just under 1Mbps, and upload 200Kbps. I first blamed some of the websites but then called my ISP, where already an announcement was issued which NOT explicitly mentioned a MS issue. They recommended to shut down the PC, then unplug the modem, then the router, wait for 30 secs. Then plug in the modem and the router (in this sequence). Then start the PC. After this procedure the connection was normal again. I have a 60Mbps connection. Speed test showed that speed.

However, my critic is on MS. They announce all these fantastic things but they seem to be unable to deliver failure free updates. That gives reason to think. Are there people sitting who issue updates w/o test? What kind of corporate culture have they anyways? I think users should hold CEO Mr. Nadella as the ultimate individual for whatever happens at Microsoft responsible for all failures. It also seems not only at MS that quality is down the drain and that profit is no. 1.

    • in reply to: Mail App in Windows 10. #1578247

Thanks for this reply to which I agree wholeheartedly. The Mail app is crappy and works in ways I always wonder about. It does not have the functionality of Windows Live Mail at all. As one example: how would block junk email?? One cannot!!!. This typical MS Bs. I still use WLM! It works alright. Is there no one at MS who looks into this piece of S***?

    • in reply to: Mail App in Windows 10. #1578151

I see that the described issue is more complicated than I thought. Therefore, I would like to ask only these question:

What happens when the default app Mail incl. Calendar will be uninstalled from Windows 10, and late be reinstalled.? What will happen to all folders etc. which were installed with these 2 apps?

I know that nothing will happen to the websites of both email providers.

    • in reply to: November big update. #1537714

I have my drivers all up-to-date! Also all applications are up-to-date! I always take god care of updating my PCs. I like Skype because it saves my a lot of money on phone calls especially overseas, even though the audio quality sometimes is not up to par.

I am still baffled, that the three apps. are absolutely do not work. Addresses etc. are all there in Skype desktop. Could it be that the MS account and the Skype account are separate? I am not concerned with unsolicited invites which I block immediately and report them as spam.

    • in reply to: Big W 10 update. #1537403

      You can download it here…

      https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Paul Thurrott has a column on not being offered the update…

      https://www.thurrott.com/windows/windows-10/62213/not-being-offered-the-windows-10-fall-update-this-may-be-why

Eventually I did this for my desktop PC. The installation worked fine and w/o problems though a bit too long for my taste.

After the installation, I picked up 2 odd things: 1) The new apps Skype video, phone and messaging are not working at all; They all end up in an error code 0xA0000001. God only knows what the heck this is. I have Skype desktop installed. 2) The color “improvement” is at best minimal, basically useless. What I want is a personalization like in XP and W 7. Why MS cannot put back in is a riddle to me. 3) I had to reinstall one of my two printers – very odd.
