I am also having issues with ssa.gov.   I finally managed to get to the site by first deleting the ssa.gov cookie in my Firefox browser.   Then I went to ssa.gov and used the signin link it provided, which was https://secure.ssa.gov/RIL/SiView.action.  This is crazy to have to go to all this trouble.  It used to work fine for me.

This problem just disappeared for me a few days ago.   I am not aware that I did anything specific to fix the problem.  I did update Thunderbird, Firefox, and a Logitech driver.   I also applied the September updates, but the problem had already disappeared before I did that.  I guess I just chalk it up to the vagaries of Microsoft.

    • in reply to: Task Host Window Preventing Shutdown/Logoff #2486038

I just started having this same problem a couple of days ago.  I usually have a few items that come up before shutdown, but they clear themselves if I wait a minute or so.  The one Task Host Window does not clear after even 5 minutes.  Forced shutdown does seem to work, with no consequences when I later reboot.  However, I wish I could find a way around this.  I hate to do the force shutdown.

By the way, most messages I found on the internet tie this back to a  Windows Update issue.  However, I have not made any updates since Sept 9 when I installed the August updates.  I also tried DISM and sfc, sfc reported it found no issues.  I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooting yesterday.  It said that it made a change, but I still had the issue when I shutdown last evening.  I ran it again today, and it said it could not detect any problems.

I also installed KB5016616 yesterday.  I had no problems with either the Realtek audio built into my laptop or with an external USB sound output that is part of my CalDigit Thunderbolt dock.  The Microsoft page referenced by Susan says, if you use Windows Update, it will automatically install the fix.

I have had a very disappointing time with the OneDrive support from Microsoft.   They keep asking me to do things that don’t make a lot of sense to me.  The last request was to create another user account, but that would be very time consuming to get another account I could use with all my software and files.  It appears they are grasping at straws rather than getting someone involved who really understands OneDrive.

Fortunately, I found several forum entries that talk about a problem with having too many overlay icons, icons that overlay the regular file icons.   That is not my problem.  I actually have only four defined overlay icons in my registry, including none for OneDrive.  I found one entry that listed 6 overlay icons for OneDrive.  I had to tweak the registry file the entry suggested (apparently, registry files must be precisely correct).  However, by exporting one of my existing overlay icon registry entries, and making the file look just the same, I managed to re-create the OneDrive overlay icons in the registry.  After rebooting, my OneDrive icons are back.  I tried to upload the file I used as a txt file, but this forum would not allow that.

The contents of the file are as follows:

      ———————————————————————————–

      Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers\ OneDrive1]
      @=”{BBACC218-34EA-4666-9D7A-C78F2274A524}”

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers\ OneDrive2]
      @=”{5AB7172C-9C11-405C-8DD5-AF20F3606282}”

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers\ OneDrive3]
      @=”{A78ED123-AB77-406B-9962-2A5D9D2F7F30}”

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers\ OneDrive4]
      @=”{F241C880-6982-4CE5-8CF7-7085BA96DA5A}”

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers\ OneDrive5]
      @=”{A0396A93-DC06-4AEF-BEE9-95FFCCAEF20E}”

      [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers\ OneDrive6]
      @=”{9AA2F32D-362A-42D9-9328-24A483E2CCC3}”

      ————————————————————————————————

Note that, the heading “Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00″ must be on the first line of the file.   The keys that follow have the name of the key enclosed in brackets on one line, and the contents (the @=”  “) on the line below.  If anyone else needs to try this, just create a file like this in something like Notepad and designate it as a .reg file.  Then double click it to run it.

I still don’t know what happened.  I don’t understand why OneDrive did not set up those icons when I reinstalled and reinitialized it.  At least I seem to have a work around, however.

    • in reply to: Onedrive sync icons disappeared #2452582

Just FYI.  Microsoft support had me try many things, but no luck.  I did find that if I enable the “Files on Demand” option, I do get the sync icons.  However, they are not superimposed on the regular file icons.  Instead, a separate column  appears after the file name labeled Sync that has the icons.  Unfortunately, when I then disable “Files on Demand” (I don’t want that), they go away again.  I got to the point where I quit OneDrive, then uninstalled it, then rebooted, then installed it again from the website.  This time OneDrive started fresh.  I had to log into my account, designate the directory to save, and change some settings.   I also got a 64 bit version of OneDrive this time, rather than the 32 bit version that apparently comes with Windows 10.  Nevertheless, I still have no sync icons.  Microsoft says they are working on it.

    • in reply to: Onedrive sync icons disappeared #2451986

I normally see the OneDrive sync status as icons superimposed on the regular file type icons.  There are no other automatic cloud sync apps on my computer.   I do make scheduled and manual backups to a local NAS using Retrospect for file backups and Macrium Reflect for full image backups.  Retrospect does not display any icons.  You simply select the directories and files that you want to be backed up and identify them in the script.   Retrospect does look for files that have changed in some way since the last backup.   I do not have Files on Demand enabled.  I want all of the files to remain on my local drive all the time, with OneDrive providing a backup location if needed.

Thanks for trying to help.   Microsoft did finally respond to my case.  They asked for screen shots of the  directories and some settings screens.   They seem to be surprised, also.

    • in reply to: Microsoft Word Completely Lost File Edits #2399057

This appears to have something to do with how Windows 365 is integrated with Onedrive.   Even though I have Onedrive set to keep all my files on the computer, Office does not seem to save them directly to the computer as the old boxed versions of Office did.   I did find a setting to “Save to computer by default” that was not checked.   I was not even aware that was an option.   Still, something went wrong.  Perhaps Onedrive did not save locally but somehow cached for a later upload and would have saved at that time, but lost the saved instructions.    As I noted, I did not find any copies of the file on my computer at least with the name I used, so if there is a unused cache version somewhere it must have a different name and not be in any of the obvious directories associated with Word.

    • in reply to: Microsoft Word Completely Lost File Edits #2398713

I looked in all the directories I could find.  There are no files in the appdata/local/microsoft/office/word/unsaved files.   In the appdata/roaming/microsoft/office/recents there are only short cuts to files, but none to the one I edited on Oct 26.   I actually searched the entire content of both of my onboard disk drives using the date string from the title and found no files containing that string in the name on either drive.   There are also no files on either drive with the designation .wbk.

I am not sure what you mean regarding opening the file.   I opened the file two days later (Oct 28) using the recents in Word itself.  That is when I noticed it opened the file I had created early on Oct 26 rather than the one I had edited the evening of Oct 26.  I immediately tried file history, but nothing from the evening of Oct 26 was there.  There were no files in the recover files option within Word.

As I noted, I make a daily file backup using Retrospect to an external NAS drive.  I opened the backup made the evening of Oct 26.  Unfortunately, the file I recovered was the one with outline only I made early on Oct 26.  So the edits I had made on the evening of Oct 26 were gone by the time I made the backup that evening — even before I ever tried opening the file.

The only thing I can assume is that, when I started my computer again after I got home from the meeting on the evening of Oct 26, OneDrive came on line.  For some reason, rather than upload the changes I had made just a few minutes earlier, it apparently replaced what it had saved locally with the version from earlier in the day from OneDrive – therefore losing the edits I had made.

Sorry.  I was not sure where to post this.  I just noticed this newsletter on the website dated today.  However, I did not get an email with this newsletter as I normally do.   Is there a way to have it resent?  Or perhaps the servers are behind?  Thanks.

In my case, it was only the keyboard text.   My mouse was not affected.  As I noted, even the function keys on the keyboard seemed to work.   I wondered if some program might have taken control of keyboard output.  It happened suddenly.  I was visiting various websites by typing in their addresses.  Suddenly, I could not enter a new address.

Thanks.  I am not sure I would be comfortable doing that if I could find the instructions.  I found a Thecus forum on SNB Forums and posted a message.  I will see if anyone responds.

I have actually purchased a new Synology NAS that is my main device now.  However, the Thecus is still fast, so I use it as a second backup media.  Unfortunately, Thecus has not updated the firmware in my N7700PRO for many years.   They have newer versions out, but they use different software.  That was one strong reason for purchasing the Synology, as they seem to design their  systems so that all can run the latest software, perhaps with some features disabled.    I will put a message on the Thecus forum, but officially Thecus has no updates.

    • in reply to: new Win10 install can’t see smb drives #2367200

I found the answer to my problem on Windows 10 20H2.  I had forgotten that Windows defaults to a Fastboot mode on startup, so my new computer came with that set.   I turned off Fastboot.  Then I remapped my NAS drive, and set the registry hack ProviderFlags again.  Now the drive connects at startup just like it does on my older Windows 10 2004 laptop.  I suspect that the Fastboot might explain other issues that people may be having on initial startup that are corrected by a reboot.

I had talked to Dell Prosupport about this.  They found a Microsoft support document saying Microsoft is trying to get rid of SMB 1 support.  That document suggested that the registry hack worked only on 2004 and was purposely invalidated for 20H2 and later versions.  So this problem may come up again in the future, but for now doing a normal boot on startup and making the suggested workarounds including the registry hack seems to still work on 20H2.
