Word’s master document ‘feature’ is a known source of document corruption. See:

Note the comment near the end of the first link:

A master document has only two possible states: Corrupt, or just about to be corrupt.

A better approach would be to create a set of custom quick parts (aka building blocks) in the document’s template and insert those as & where required. Even if one is accidentally deleted, it’s a simple matter to re-insert from the quick parts gallery. See:

Your Conditional Heading description suggests you’re doing a catalogue/directory mailmerge. In that case, check out my Microsoft Word Catalogue/Directory Mailmerge Tutorial at:

The tutorial covers everything from list creation to the insertion & calculation of values in multi-record tables in letters. Do read the tutorial before trying to use the mailmerge document included with it.

Depending on what you’re trying to achieve, the field coding for this can be complex. However, since the tutorial document includes working field codes for all of its examples, most of the hard work has already been done for you – you should be able to do little more than copy/paste the relevant field codes into your own mailmerge main document, substitute/insert  your own field names and adjust the formatting to get the results you desire. Another option would be to use a DATABASE field in a normal ‘letter’ mailmerge main document and a macro to drive the process. An outline of this approach can be found at:

Conversely, if you’re using a relational database or, Excel workbook with a separate table with just a single instance of each of the grouping criteria, a DATABASE field in a normal ‘letter’ mailmerge main document could be used without the need for a macro. As for the Styles issue, you can’t control the format of text inserted via the \b or \f MERGEFIELD switches – you’d need to use IF fields for that. For example:

where each ¶ is a real paragraph break with the required Style applied. Note, too, how the final mergefield is attached to the start of the paragraph following the series.

About the only way you can ensure that outcome with Word is to vary the margin size.

If you output the content to PDF, though, the resulting PDF can be scaled proportionately to fit any paper size. You won’t be able to apply different horizontal and vertical scales, though.

I’d suggest a wildcard Find/Replace, with:

Find = ([0-9]{1,2}/[0-9]{,12}/[0-9]{4})([0-9])

Replace = \1^p\2

That particular error can occur when you try to copy & paste content within a table. See, for example: Error 4605 while trying to copy and paste with same document (msofficeforums.com) and the answer given there.

You could, of course, apply the Windows system read-only attribute to the Normal.dotm file, which would prevent any changes that might corrupt it. That would make customising it a PITA though. Savvy users keep a backup copy with all their customisations in place for ease of restoration…
