    • in reply to: Edge isn’t dead, it’s just morphing #239703

Maybe Edge will become available to Windows 7 and 8.1. But, not till the final IE users have gone to Google or Firefox. Multiple sites, including Yahoo email (yes, I still use Yahoo!), are informing me that I have to move to Google Chrome or Firefox if I still want to use them. After January 31, 2019, Yahoo email says I can no longer access it using IE 11. (Yes, I still use IE 11.) Yahoo didn’t notify me know directly. Just an occasional, small pop-up in my email.

I contacted Yahoo; and went back and forth with them, as they said I wasn’t using the latest IE on my Windows 8.1 laptop. Yahoo said MS was no longer supporting IE 11. I replied with links to MS showing it was still supported; and that Edge wasn’t available in Windows 8.1. Pinterest is pushing me to “upgrade” my browser. Awaiting answer from them if I can still use IE 11. Can’t stream shows from NBC or AMC with IE 11 over last several months. Feeling like I’m the last to know that IE 11 must be sun-setting early. I know, everyone here said, a long time ago, to ditch IE. My bad.

    • in reply to: Our newest forum: Access Tech #191051

Thanks for this new forum! Such a quick response after asking @Elly how she dealt with sitting long periods at a computer with her health issues. And if she had any computer tips for disabled persons. Though my illness isn’t as severe yet, I have similar issues and much weakness. It’s quite challenging. I live alone, and can’t leave the house much; so my computer is a life-line–whether it’s to pay bills, order needed items, learn, connect with the outside world, or check the Defcon rating! Everyone here, in their kindness and generosity, helps me keep my pc running; and I’m truly grateful.

I admire Elly’s frankness and honesty, as many people are disabled and deal as best they can; but often silently. Illness and disability is often a “language” unto itself, where those who “speak” it seem to have a mutual understanding that often requires no literal words. Each person’s needs are quite diverse, and often the world doesn’t know what to do or how to act with us. Or ignores us. Not intentionally, more of a “language” barrier! 🙂

Not knowing this would generate a forum, at that point, I was so weary of sitting up at my computer, but needed to use it longer. My upper body is weak and tires out. Also my laptop screen sits below my eye level (but good height to type); then I lean forward and down to see it, which adds to problems. (Though all my top menu bars force my vision down, so part is on me!)

After some thought, I guess it’s not only suggestions on ways to make computer usage easier and more pain-free, for the variety of issues disabled persons have. Though, that’s an enormous part! I think it’s also, for non-tech people like me, how to better understand, use, and set up their computer so that the time spent on it is more productive, efficient and enjoyable. I already find so much helpful software, shortcuts, article links… that I can trust. And I originally ended here cause of GWX! 🙂 Thanks!

    • When downloading KB4099950 from the catalog, the download had two links, one for each file, which I originally didn’t see. So I downloaded/installed the .msu file only. (I downloaded all my files first, and installed them together later. As I’d rolled back to Dec. 2017 previously, I had a list to do.)

After I finished installing updates, I used Elly’s directions for a final check I hadn’t missed anything; and caught she said “It (KB4099950) comes with two files, an .exe, and a .msu”. And, “I saw a brief black cmd window”. I went back and saw the 2nd link; then downloaded and ran the .exe file. But, the .exe file was done alone after all other updates. It did flash a cmd window this time.

So, is this ok? Or do I need to uninstall and re-install KB4099950? And would this necessitate uninstalling any of the Jan. thru April Security updates so everything is installed in the proper order? Thanks!

    • Hi Elly, I wanted to follow-up on my post #188753. I did my installation according to your directions, and everything went fine. (Sigh of relief!) But, I installed one thing out of order. I installed KB4099950 (the .msu file) before the security and IE 11 updates. But I missed the KB4099950 (pciclearstalecache… .exe file), and I didn’t run it until after all the other updates were installed and I rebooted. Am I ok? Thanks in advance!
PS: After I installed my other WU, KB3177467 showed up as a checked important update. Do I need this? (I don’t ever plan on W10).

    • Hi Elly, Thanks for sharing and giving of yourself to us all. I myself have a neuromuscular disorder, which includes pain, weakness and visual issues; and I live alone. I’d be most interested in how you deal with sitting at the computer for long periods… I find it so difficult. Even just reading the info here (especially of late!), my body wears out. I find computers very interesting, but am light years behind everyone else. I’m so thankful for you and everyone else that helps here. If you ever do a forum with computer tips for disabled persons, I’d be interested. Computers and tech do open up the world, and are so much easier to use than phones and tablets… at least for me. 🙂

    • Thanks, Elly, will give it a try. There seemed to be so many differences of opinion!

    • in reply to: Patch Lady – Office issues with April updates #188758

Hi, I have Office 2013 with CTR. I disable Office updates until Woody gives the all clear to update; and then I update Office and turn it back off. I don’t know think the KB4018288 for Office 2013 will affect me, but wasn’t sure. I wanted to update Office since Woody moved to Defcon 3, but once I update it, there’s no way to uninstall this possibly problematic update, correct? (There’s no way to view or uninstall individual Office updates with CTR, is there?)

So, is ok to update Office? Thanks for any help!

    • Hi. Sorry, I read Woody’s article, but I’m still confused. I’d uninstalled my Jan & Feb 2018 security only updates per Patch Lady’s advice to roll back Windows 7 pc’s to Dec. 2017 to protect against buggy patches and Total Meltdown. The only updates installed on my pc after Dec. 2017 is a .Net Frame Update, IE cumulative updates thru March, and office updates thru March. I didn’t install any other updates that came out in between.

Is it safe now to install all the 2018 Security Only updates, and should I follow the installation procedure as noted in fl’s post #188586. Or is it better to only install April IE update, and wait for the May updates? Thanks in advance for any help.

Windows 7, 64 bit, Home ed.

    • Thanks, The Surfing Pensioner! System re-booted suddenly and finished configuring. All is well. (Sigh of relief!) Next time I’ll wait 3 hours before asking for help. And hang on to your link!

    • Help please… Was rolling back my Jan./Feb. Security only updates. Created restore point. Uninstalled Feb. update. Restarted pc. All fine. Uninstalled Jan. update. After restart, pc is stuck in “preparing to configure Windows” for 30+ minutes. Should I keep waiting, giving Windows a chance to resolve things? How long to wait, and what to do if continues to be stuck? Any help greatly appreciated!

      Windows 7, 64-bit Home edition.

    • Thanks SueW! I realize it has nothing to do with IE. I wanted to know if I needed KB4100480 as I currently have Jan/Feb updates, which I’m going to roll back. What a mess this is! 🙂
Reason I asked, too, was post #182586 in Patch Lady’s 3/31 article called it a “fix” for any issues caused by having had those updates installed.

    • So, if I roll back Windows 7 to Dec. 2017, I don’t need KB4100480? Thanks for W8.1 info!
PS: (as per Patch Lady’s 3/31 post.) If I do still need KB4100480, do I roll back first, and then install it, along with March IE update?

    • Sorry to ask so late; but if going back to Dec. 2017 state on Windows 7 64-bit Home pc, I don’t need to install KB4100480? (No March updates installed.) As per PKCano’s post #183346, it’s ok to leave KB4074880 (.Net Frame) and IE updates. Should I install March IE update KB 4096040?

Per Woody’s article, this is a Windows 7 issue; so I should install March updates on Windows 8.1, 64-bit Home pc? (I’m one of the above mentioned few who do have Win. 8.1 pc, too.)

    • in reply to: Patch Lady – some comments about the master listing #177927

      Wildbill,

That’s how I do Office 2013 Home & Student updates on my W8.1 pc; except not used OffCAT before. Do you have a link for that? Though, I sometimes miss the Defcon change before the new non-security Office updates are out, which aren’t cleared yet. I haven’t installed Jan. or Feb. Office updates yet; waiting for the March all-clear.

But “ClickToRun” Service still runs in background. I tried stopping it, but it restarts itself. Is there away to stop it except when I’m updating?

      @ anonymous
My C:/ drive has all the files I’m using. The D:/ drive contains a “HP recovery partition”, which says it has files to do a system recovery. I can’t see or access the files. “Properties” of the partition shows it has 1 file with 3 folders. Shouldn’t I contain this in each system image then?
