That wasn’t always the case. Which version introduced it? 1609?

AskWoody LoungerI can’t recall now which, but some application (or use of) was to open exclusively in Edge not the default browser.
I believe you’re referring to the proposal to do that with links in emails being read in the Mail app.

AskWoody LoungerDid Microsoft again extend the end date of the free upgrade from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro? When I shopped online for laptops in early April, I found an article that said the end date had been extended to March 31, 2018 (except for PCs that are priced $799, or whatever, and up).

AskWoody LoungerMay 1, 2018 at 7:50 am in reply to: Patch Lady – finally got an HP Envy 8 Note 5000 upgraded #189233I’ll bet she changed the version of Win10 on this tablet from Home to Enterprise (assuming she didn’t order it with Enterprise to begin with) and then set it up in the usual manner to stave off updates.

AskWoody LoungerToday (April 30) is International Jazz Day. Microsoft missed a great opportunity to name 1803 something other than April 2018 Update. (The folks at Bing marked IJD.)
EDIT: On second thought, UNESCO (which, according to Wikipedia, is the body that declared IJD) and the musicians behind IJD would probably balk at Microsoft co-opting it for its own use.

AskWoody LoungerI suspect I missed a post confirming that this is version 1803 even though it’s dubbed April 2018 Update?

Ugh, I hope not. As per advice provided in the forum here, I haven’t connected this PC to the internet yet.

AskWoody LoungerApril 30, 2018 at 9:13 am in reply to: A couple of questions about local user accounts in Windows 10 #188847I did have my older laptop (with Win10 Home) set up with an administrator account and a standard account for everyday use. However, after I set my internet connection to metered in the administrator account, in the standard account, the toggle for metered was off and grayed out (so I couldn’t change it). So I made that an administrator account, too.
Now I have a Win10 Pro Education laptop that I’m setting up. I’m wondering if it’s better to have a seemingly unmetered internet connection and rely on the relevant features of Pro to try to rein in Windows Update, and use a standard account for everyday use; or if it’s better to have a metered connection and use an administrator account for everyday use in spite of the increased risk of malware. (On the other hand, maybe on a Win10 Pro Education PC, a standard account can have a metered connection.)

AskWoody LoungerApril 22, 2018 at 6:54 pm in reply to: Patch Lady – finally got an HP Envy 8 Note 5000 upgraded #186487My guess is, the HP Envy 8 Note 5000 is an 8″ tablet and thus, its internal “hard” drive can’t be upgraded. (And laptops that have a 32 GB eMMC typically have them soldered in place, too.)

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 26, 2018 at 9:00 am in reply to: Tired of the bugs in Microsoft’s pushed patches? Here’s how to take control updating Windows 10. #170489Uninstalling in Win10 is NOT enogh to keep it from installing again. First, you need to download wushowhide from Microsoft – it will let you HIDE the update. Then read Woody’s ConputerWorld article on how to Block Forced Win10 Updates. There is also a free tool to block Win Updates – See this topic under the Tools Forum
Thanks. I neglected to write that I stopped and disabled the Windows Update service as Susan advised here. Will Windows try to download the uninstalled update in spite of this?
I’d read that Computerworld article before and the only action I could take since I have Home, not Pro was to set my internet connection to metered, but Windows Update eventually downloaded updates in spite of it.

Here’s how to take control updating Windows 10. #170337If Windows 10 has downloaded updates but not yet installed them, and you want to prevent their installation, see How To Clear Windows Update Cache In Windows 10 and also [SNIP].
My PC has Windows 10 Home 64-bit Version 1709 Build 16299.194. I went to Installed Updates in Control Panel and uninstalled the update that was downloaded and that I don’t want installed (yet). Isn’t that enough to keep it from being installed? Would following the steps to clear the Windows Update cache stop Windows from nagging me to restart and from restarting my PC itself?

AskWoody LoungerSpeaking of ads on this site, do they carry a risk of malware even though you’re choosy about the ones you accept? Not that I would enable my ad blocker for this site if they do.
