“comparability issues are a thing of the past”, should read “compatibility issues”…

      Still can’t spell!

I’m also looking forward to see how CutefishOS develops. I looked at in January, but found it full of bugs and needing much more work before being useful. However, the concept offers much to like.

I’m also keeping an eye on Pop!OS as they develop their own desktop.

Just what KDE and linux in general doesn’t need.

    • in reply to: Zorin OS #2410129

I’m running Zorin OS 16, and am pretty happy with it. I have tried most distro’s but never stayed on any particular one for long.

I use my Zorin pc for all things, including banking, without issue. I use Timeshift for daily backups of my system and it works great as well.

I don’t have long term experience with it, since I have only been using it since v 16 was released. On a day to day basis, it’s great and I prefer it over Windows 11.

In linux, there’s something for everyone. Using a live USB drive, you can try as many as you want without the need to install it, until finding one that you like.

    • EP, thanks for the link. Good article. I have found Windows 11 to be a pig just like Windows 8, utterly worthless to actually be productive with. You can do various hacks and tweaks to make it more like Windows 10, but why should you have to do that? On two of my three pc’s, and all three pc’s can run Windows 11, my path is to stay on Windows 10 and then move to linux. The third one is on linux already and I find it a much better experience that Windows 11.

Windows 10 vs linux – it’s close, but I would pick Windows 10.
Windows 11 vs linux – it’s not close and for me linux is the clear winner.

Mice do wear out, and it sounds like the switches are worn out.  There are plenty of good mice out there.  I don’t know your budget, but I like SteelSeries Rival 310, for about $39 plus shipping from amazon.  There are lots of good mice available.  Cheap mice use cheap switches, but you don’t need to spend a whole lot to find a good mouse.

Thanks for the links. Very helpful.

    • in reply to: So have you been offered Win11 yet? #2394510

I have 3 ryzen pc’s, and they all fully qualify for the Win11 “upgrade”.  Have not been offered Win11.  Went ahead and downloaded the Win11 iso and did a clean install of Win11 on one of the pc’s.  No problem with the install, and will be using that pc as my test pc.

For me, Win11 is a just a different version of Windows 8.  The OS seems created for touch devices.  I’m not a Microsoft hater, but the OS is clearly unfinished and unstable, and would not recommend it to anyone for anything other than testing purposes.

    • in reply to: Windows updates error out #2365497

When I have had error code: 0x80070002, I have always been able to resolve it by following the steps in the YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_vtjCNHaoM.  I have no connection with the video, and I know that these same steps are listed elsewhere  (I can’t remember where I originally found them), but by following these steps it should resolve the problem.

    • in reply to: Why askwoody? #2359353

Reading Anonymous #2 post has caused me to ask myself the question, “If I had a problem, would I turn to askwoody for help?”  My answer would be no, I would not.

That doesn’t mean that I think askwoody is a waste of time.  I think askwoody’s newsletter is first rate and I have found it helpful.  Askwoody has a lot to offer, depending on your interest, but there are other forums out there that are better suited for hardware issues, paid software issues, etc, that are more welcoming to people having problems and needing help.

I’m just a grumpy old man, but I think that Anonymous #2 has some valid points that are worth considering.

RE: “Several times I have asked a question about different issues I am having and rather than an honest answer I am ‘gently’ told to google it.” From where I sit, that’s an honest answer and pretty good advice. Chances are that whatever problem you’re having, someone else has also had it and found the answers that they needed. When you google it, it’s all right there for you.

If it’s a question of not knowing what to ask, just say so, that you need help in defining the problem. There’s an awful lot of very sharp people here that love a good challenge.

And for what’s it worth, I think that it would be beneficial if you give Oscar’s posts a second read.

The best advice in the world is worthless if not taken. I wish you well.

    • I believe that the “20 infections” includes potentially unwanted software that are later found to be harmless and hence, “no infections.”  When I ran MSERT on my system, I found that the same thing happened.  There are some pretty sharp people here at AskWoody, perhaps they have some additional ideas?
