AskWoody LoungerI would not load the current version of Win 11 on any production machine. The current version of Win 11 just has too many issues to be able to rely on it. However, I have found that the next version of Win 11, 22621.160, is very stable. I have it on my daily driver without issue. But again, when it becomes available to the public for download, I would not load it on a client’s production machine without extensive testing.

1 pc Windows 10
1 pc Manjaro Plasma

AskWoody LoungerJuly 3, 2022 at 7:12 am in reply to: Considering Voice Over Internet (VOIP) for making calls in-country and abroad. #2457955I agree with Alex5723 re: WhatsApp. It’s the only program that I use for international calls. From California to various parts of Asia, and from various parts of Asia to California. It’s what my friends and family and I use to keep in contact with.

Also, this guy is pretty good when it comes to Pop! OS: LearnLinuxTV: https://www.youtube.com/c/LearnLinuxtv/videos
By the way, LearnLinuxTV has both a desktop and a laptop from System76 and loves them.

AskWoody LoungerJust my 2 cents:
As stated above, Lapsus$ data extortion hacking group appears to be money motivated, not ideological motivated.
“I always think its risky to take sides in a conflict the US is not directly involved in.” I think there is little doubt that the US is directly involved in the conflict. We are directly giving Ukraine money, arms, medical supplies, real time satellite data, military intelligence and planning, etc. The US is giving Ukraine just about everything it possibly can without putting US troops on the ground.
There is always ongoing cyberwarfare between the various state players. It would be foolish to think that Russia and the US are not actively targeting each other. How that will play out in public in the coming days, I have no idea.

AskWoody LoungerAfter removing my paid Kaspersky software from my Windows pc’s, and finding out about the “new Bitdefender free antivirus” from Alex5723, I’m giving it a shot. Thanks Alex5723.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 18, 2022 at 12:11 am in reply to: Have you thought of setting up different interest sections on Ask Woody? #2432292I think that Susan and all of the people that make askwoody what it is, do a pretty good job of keeping things running. The newsletter is very, very, good. My presence on askwoody is small. I have made a few comments from time to time, usually in the Linux forum. I’m not one of those that dominate here.
I do find that I have problems finding what I’m searching for. It is very possible that I’m in the minority, and most people have no issues, but I have given up trying to search for information. Perhaps, a tutorial on the subject in the newsletter?
Perhaps, a targeted questionnaire concerning ways that the information on the site could be more streamlined and easier to find?
Again, I realize that it just may be me. No matter what, I still visit askwoody once or twice a day to see what’s happening. Another great thing about askwoody is that Susan does listen and her responses are clear and thought out.
Thanks.

AskWoody LoungerI have always been a big Kaspersky fan. But I think that OscarCP is correct in his assessment. Yesterday, I permanently uninstalled Kaspersky from my Windows pc’s.

AskWoody LoungerI’m not a big fan of Defender, but it’s not horrible. I do agree that money would be better spent getting a password manager and an external drive of some sort for backups.

AskWoody LoungerAlso, with the release of Kubuntu 20.04.4 LTS, it resolves many installation issues on current hardware with Nvidia gpu’s. Very happy with this release.

AskWoody LoungerWhether US or Russian, or any other country, software can certainly be weaponized. The software doesn’t even have to have a built in backdoor to do this, just knowing the vulnerabilities that can be exploited can be all that is needed.
If anyone has an issue with using Kaspersky products, by all means, remove them. But I don’t think their products pose any greater risk than any other country’s software, including those from the US.

AskWoody LoungerI don’t know when I discovered Dedoimedo, but since that day I have become a huge fan of his work. His reviews on Linux are the best that I have found. Distrowatch would be nothing without his reviews of the major distros. He is very good at communicating with the reader in his reviews. “He gets it, and makes sure you get it.” His problem solving abilities are second to none. You don’t have to be a fan of Linux to enjoy his reviews, he also reviews Windows, Office, Browsers, etc.
