And yet, after finding and changing those settings, and restarting, OneNote still displays the Copilot icon, ready to summarize my page.

      Persistence of Copilot

Windows 11, 23H2.  I should have said.  Very fluid situation there.  Thanks!

      *******

Late breaking development is that on my other Win 11 23H2 laptop, I do see the Microsoft 365 Copilot entry. And I use a local account on that laptop.  Hmmm.

I wonder if I turned it off then logged in with Microsoft account it would be turned back on again?  Not sure I’ve yet had enough wine to try that.

      Just a BTW bbearen,

I’m using a Microsoft account to log into my laptop. I notice you’re using a local account.

Not to cruelly raise my hopes only to find it won’t work, but do you suppose that if I logged in with a local account there would be a difference in Settings?

    • in reply to: The mustache question #2746599

Thanks bbearen, how wonderful it would be if this actually worked!

Unfortunately, there are entries in my settings for Microsoft 365 Copilot.

I do think MSFT is flailing over Copilot, trying to find a way to insert it in an acceptable form. Apparently, they have offered some users your options.

I was able to use the switch in Word Options to turn it off, but no such options exist to turn it off elsewhere without heroic and mostly futile activity.

I guess it will settle down eventually. In the meantime I have made my displeasure known multiple times via feedback. For what that’s worth.

My H&F subscription is up for renewal and I went through a “downgrading” process of purchasing Microsoft 365 without AI (I have no hope that this will actually work and assume I will be inundated with various notices to “upgrade”), but in the meantime I will be mumbling to myself and drinking wine for lunch.

I understand that AI is here. I’m not struggling with that other than I think it’s early going. I can’t tell you how often I’ve given a thumbs down to Google’s AI answers because they’re old, not what I asked, or just plain wrong.

What I struggle with is the aggressive way Microsoft is shoving Copilot at me within MS 365 when I don’t feel the need to use it.  It’s not a matter of which AI is better, it’s a matter of do I want or need it at all?

So far I don’t.  I don’t want help writing.  I don’t need Copilot selecting a random word in OneNote that it thinks I might want information about, when all I want is to add a quick edit. It’s distracting and gets in my way. If nothing else, I have to click away from the word it chose before I can type.  (And of course ponder why it chose that word.)

I’d like to be able to choose when and if I use Copilot without it constantly hovering, trying to remind me to use it.

I have 365 Family, followed the “every six months” link in the article to change updates to every six months.  Didn’t work.  Double-checked what I did.  Again, bupkis.

Ah well.  I’m beginning to think Microsoft doesn’t want me to have a stable environment. 😋

      Susan,
Surface issues aside, I’m curious what you mean by “mind you with new style SSD drives now days”.

      Thanks!  Kim

    • I suspect the purpose of moving people in large waves well before the EOL date is so MSFT support can handle all the millions of wailing customer support calls in an orderly fashion. And the final product can be continual tweaks depending on what causes the most pain. I still get the message that my laptop isn’t quite ready.  I think that really means that since I’ve chewed the … face off more than one unsuspecting support rep when things have gone awry, that they just aren’t ready for me.

Works for me with Outlook as RSS reader.

    • My husband and I each have a Win 7 Pro at home.  He started getting the error and I did not.  So I wondered what was different.  Using the article at Bleeping Computer, I noted that my computer was running two Adobe services: Adobe Update Services (automatic), and Adobe Flash Update (manual).  I checked his and found Adobe Genuine Monitor Service and Adobe Genuine Software Integrity Service.  The only Adobe product installed on his laptop is Reader, so I disabled those two “extra” services.

I then shut down his laptop (using the log-off > red shut down button), rebooted, then tried to shut down again.  NO ERROR.

At least on his laptop, it’s the Adobe Monitor and Software Integrity Services that produced the error.

      Go figure.

I was not able to find the info that led to my post, above. So I called Fidelity and they are not pulling the rug out from under Win 7 users. However, they do have a gentle warning. This is what I was told.

Fidelity will support Win 7 on a “best efforts basis as long as it has a pulse.” But “What you will encounter is trouble with the browser…. As browsers update, they will support [Windows 7] less and less.”

Will browsers continue supporting Win 7 if Microsoft’s paid support takes off and a large user base persists?

I humbly apologize for any FUD spread.

To answer your last question first: Nope.

Regarding Fidelity, I can’t find the link.  Will update when/if I do.  Very good news if it isn’t true.  It’s also possible that they’ve backed off (as TurboTax seems to have done) since I read that.

Well, I received this email today which said

As of January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or support for PCs running Windows 7. While you will still be able to install TurboTax for Tax Year 2019 on Windows 7, computers running on Windows 7 will be more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. To avoid these risks, Microsoft recommends that Windows 7 users upgrade to Windows 10.

To help safeguard your personal information, like your Social Security number and bank account information, we strongly recommend that TurboTax customers using Windows 7 upgrade their operating system before installing TurboTax or switch to TurboTax Online.

So it looks like they backed off their previous statement? They are suggesting TurboTax Online as an alternative.
