AskWoody LoungerDid you already install the MSRT? If not then what is likely happening is the MSRT is scanning your disc. You can’t believe everything you read in MSFT status listings.
I seem to remember that you can click on the update history while this is going on and see what is installing or progress.
If you already ran MSRT before doing this install there might be another issue. Did you manually install the SSU? In theory it will only be offered after you complete this update so pre-installing it could be an issue.
Otherwise you can download the update from the catalog and try it as a stand alone install.
If you are running MSRT as part of this update, it could easily take up to an hour to do the scan depending on the size of your boot drive.

AskWoody LoungerI have a problem on one machine, my old HP Pavillion win is running Win7 Pro. Installed the updates (roll up and NET) and MSRT. On reboot it got to 100% and got stuck there, I then tried a reboot and it started again but only gets to 35%. Everything I’ve tried I can’t get beyond the Configuring screen. Is there a way to get past that? Anyway to get to a restore screen and roll it back?
Just waiting in LA. (Only have one more machine to do and then will have to do some shopping for a Win10 Desktop).

AskWoody LoungerI’ve just converted over all my machines to EPG123 so have current schedules for a longer period of time than MSFT supplied.
As for updates, a friend was unable to update her HP machine for the last year..I guess your vulnerability depends on usage. Eventually I’ll have to get a Win10 machine for general use but as long as the Mcdia Center machines and my Cable Cards are working I can still record HBO and other premium channels and here in Spectrum (nee TWC). Everything other than OTA channels is protected here as copy once and won’t work with Plex or any of the other choices. VLC won’t play protected content and Silicon Dust now was DRM but play only for iOS and Android as long as the Android has the proper version and Play Protect is enabled. Maybe they’ll get their DVR to handle DRM from Cable Card in the future or maybe all the cable companies will give up and all we’ll have is streaming.

AskWoody LoungerNovember 16, 2019 at 5:29 pm in reply to: Born: Microsoft incorrectly signed the MSRT update that’s been bouncing around. It’s fixed now. #2006479Maybe the headline should be changed from “fixed” to “gone”. It worked on an 8.1 pro machine but failed on a Win 7 Pro laptop and then magically disappeared from six other machines. I did download the .msi version from the catalog but really didn’t run it just changed the registry.

AskWoody LoungerMay 7, 2019 at 3:23 pm in reply to: MS-DEFCON 4: It’s time to install the April 2019 patches #1412520Anyone else seeing an extra reboot on Win7? Several machines (win7Pro 64) install and then does the 30% and restart and works their way up to 100% at which point the machine shuts down and restarts back to configuring Windows. It takes some time then gets to 35 % (first and only figure) and then the sign in screen. On sign in after the welcome screen a black screen with box in upper left hand corner updating desktop update.
The double boot and desktop didn’t seem to appear on Win7 Home Prem 64 on two machines, the other has happened on machines with either AMD or Intel processors.

AskWoody LoungerProbably not many of us left, The HP MediaCenter extender X280n stays visible (five of those) and so far the Ceton Echo has stayed visible. The Linksys still shows in the attached devices on the ASUS router so don’t know what’s going on with it.

AskWoody LoungerI applied the Win7 patches and the hot fix and have a new network issue. The Linksys Media Center Extenders disappear from the network (two DMA2100 and one DMA2200). I changed one extender, moved the cable to a different switch and still have the same problem…after some time the extender will stop responding the picture will freeze on the tv set and the extender will be gone from media devices in network. A power cycle will bring it back and it will function for several hours before it disappears again. I have six win 7 machines one Win 8.1 RT and one Win 8.1 machine. They’re gone from the 8.1 machines as well. Perhaps Linksys certificates expired? Or was it something in the patches?

AskWoody LoungerApril 28, 2017 at 12:41 pm in reply to: (Closed) Comments on AKB 2000003: Ongoing list of "Group B" monthly updates for Win7 and 8.1 #111667Update on double restarts, having completed seven machines, five of them had a double restart on the Win Security stand alone updater. Win 8.1 pro did not (Lenovo laptop) and the new Dell i5 Laptop did not (couple of years old but just had to replace the HD and re-install Win7 Pro).
Have one machine left, but this appears to happen more often than not.

AskWoody LoungerThis started on all my machines July 11 or 12th (depending on machine) and the first update listed for some machines was July 15. It did not install automatically and I had to run it from WU.
So far I’ve had to manually run the updates from WU. I have one listed now on this machine and I’ll see if it takes care of itself.
I’m beginning to think a lot of the problems with WU, MSE updates and the fact you had to scan for new MSE updates in WU is all related to MSFT server issues. We went through this with Media Center TV Listing updates a couple of years ago which was resolved with a different sent of DNS servers. Not this is the same issue, but they have had problems in the past with auto updates and downloads.

AskWoody LoungerAnyone else notice that MSSE stopped updating? Depending on the machine, the last auto install was 7/11 or 7/12. I had a SE optional update on several machines which I applied as an optional update with WU. Those machines took between 30 seconds to 2 hours to install the update. On other machines I tried without success to do an update with the MSSE program which just said downloading for a coupe of hours. Then I checked for updates to add the SE update. Those took up to 3 hours to return the new WU update list. Luckly those installed almost immediately although all the files were different sizes from 2.1m to 7.0m.
Something different going on with Win7 and SE now as well?

AskWoody LoungerJune 15, 2016 at 2:12 pm in reply to: Win7 users: Install KB 3161664 to speed up Windows Update scans #40991I haven’t installed any of the updates as yet, but one Win7 64 Pro machine got offered KB3102810 which it says was published 11/10/2105 and more info lists it as “Installing and searching for updates is slow and high CPU usage occurs in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2”
Maybe I never installed it on this machine or hid it in the past (cleared the update cache accidentally in GWX control panel on this one machine)
But is this something everyone else has running? Checking for updates on a Win7 64 Pro Dell 8700 took two hours when I just wanted to see if this would be offered there as well.

AskWoody LoungerWill it work?
Not for me, does the roll up have the updates that killed cableCARD in Win7? Does it have the update the prevented my HP AMD machine from booting?
There is a year and half of trepidation to running Win Update with all the pieces exposed. With them hidden the risk is just too great to take any of the candy.

AskWoody LoungerIf MSFT starts charging for Win7 and Win8.1 patches and updates will they guarantee that they will work and stop borking our machines?
What recourse would we have against MSFT for a bad update?
