The gist of my post was to ask about using group policy to make windows 10 notify me before installing updates automatically and if using group policy would be a good and reliable workaround. Or would the new May 1903 update, download and install now option, would work good enough so I wouldn’t have to worry about editing group policy? Sorry if I wasn’t coming across clearly. -

I see that it was brought up for discussion back in 2018 but nothing came of it. https://www.thewindowsclub.com/make-windows-10-notify-you-before-downloading-or-installing-windows-updates But now I see it’s up for discussion again. Or is the new feature Download and install going to be good enough so it won’t be necessary to use Group Policy? Thanks.

AskWoody LoungerApril 1, 2019 at 2:12 pm in reply to: Patch Watch: Most of the March patches look clean at this point #347699I’m using Windows 7 x86 Home. In looking at Susans April patch list, she mentions the importance of the SHA-2 Servicing Stack update KB4490628 but nowhere does she mention KB4474419, the SHA-2 update that shows up in my WU. KB4490628 does not show up my March updates, only KB4474419. Does that mean that I must also install 4490628 through Windows Catalog or am I fine with only installing KB4474419? Thanks for any advise.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 11, 2019 at 2:42 pm in reply to: MS-DEFCON 2: Make sure your machine’s set to block automatic updates #340188I’m a long time Windows 7 home user. It’s almost time for me to bite the bullet and buy a new Windows 10 Pro desktop PC. My question, silly it may sound to you Windows 10 pros, is how do I make sure during initial computer set-up that windows updater doesn’t just install every update in the book? Every article I’ve read says to click the check for updates button during install and let it do its work. Or is this something I need to do?
Thanks for any help.

AskWoody LoungerJune 3, 2018 at 2:27 pm in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: Time to patch, but be aware of Network-busting bugs in Win7 #195787Yesterday Malwarebytes was doing system maintenance on its updating. That’s why the red warning flag. It went back to normal this morning. MBAM posted it on its forum. Users were not happy about it. It would be nice if Malwarebytes would give some advanced warning.

AskWoody LoungerApril 2, 2018 at 3:37 pm in reply to: Windows patches for Total Meltdown, bluescreens, an IP stopper — and little documentation #180684Woody
This is what is confusing. According to your article, the Total Meltdown Mess refers to 64 bit processors. (If you installed any of those 11 patches on your Intel 64-bit Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 computer, you opened up a gaping hole known as “Total Meltdown,”) Many of us are still using the 32 bit processors with Windows 7. I am using a 32bit older AMD. From what I have read, the 32bit is not affected by this “Total Meltdown gaping hole” mess and installing KB4100480 is not required. Am I right? Can this be explained to a confused 72 old man? Regardless, I will watch your Defcon rating and follow your instructions then. Thanks for your invaluable help.

AskWoody LoungerIn reference to installing patch KB4100480, it does say that it’s for 64-bit processors. I think you are correct in saying HOLD ON until Susan clarifies this. Since I have an AMD 32 bit processor, I will hold on installing that patch. (It also does not show up in my Windows Update). Group A. I can only access it through Windows Catalog).

Thanks for your reply. I did download KB4073578 successfully. Is is necessary to download KB4056894 monthly rollup for meltdown or spectre protection, or can I leave it hidden? I have updates set at (check for updates but let me choose to download and install) Trying to get a grasp on all these downloads is mind numbing for a 71 yr old codger. Thanks. JimS
