AskWoody PlusVery sad to learn of Woody’s passing. I’m of an age where more than half of my friends are no longer around. I considered Woody a friend for all the computer support he provided via his websites, magazine articles and books. He was always helpful and good spirited during the times I reached out to him. RIP Woody

AskWoody PlusI totally missed this thread before installing Security Only KB5003681 yesterday on a HP machine running Windows 8.1 Pro x64. Windows Defender stopped real time monitoring and won’t let me enabled it. I tried the sfc scan and the gpedit tips, but nothing got real time working other than uninstalling KB5003681. If Microsoft doesn’t fix this in next month’s update, it will be time to replace Defender with a third-party antivirus package.

AskWoody PlusThanks for both of your posts. I have all the power saving options turned off in Control Panel on both desktops. On one computer, there were two USB Hubs under USB Controllers in Device Manager that had “Allow the computer to turn off this device” checked, but the other computer had no such selections checked. It doesn’t seem logical for the computer to have any USB Hubs turned off when first booting up, but I did uncheck the power saving option on those two hubs.
I’ll watch what happens on both computers – maybe the January Security Only update will fix the issue??

AskWoody PlusThe new NWS radar web site is a disaster. Images for loops take forever to download and even after they are downloaded, the motion is excruciatingly slow and uneven. Useless to track slow moving winter storms, much less summer thunderstorms with embedded tornadoes. This is the case even when downloading data from a single radar site. The hourly and storm total precipitation images do not seem to work at all. It seems like the objective was to have a visually impressive web site rather than one that could be of use in tracking dangerous weather in real time.

AskWoody PlusJanuary 27, 2020 at 7:05 pm in reply to: Comments on AKB 2000003: Ongoing list of "Group B" monthly updates for Win7 and 8.1 #2110913While I mourn the passing of free updates for Windows 7, I am transitioning to two computers running W8.1. Thanks to PKCano for helping me be a “Group B” member in the past and hopefully the next 3 years!
