      Joe S:

Good to know that it works. Are you able to still pin a shortcut to the taskbar?

From the sevenforums article you could pretty easily use the registry downloads and not have to run a program.

      Joe

Reading through the comments on either that site, or others that referenced it, there seemed to be some controversy about side effects caused by making those changes directly, so I did not want to chance it.

I downloaded Macrium Reflect Standard version a couple of days ago. I really like it, and think it’s a keeper. I had tried Acronis several times over the years, but found it slow and not consistent.

Thanks, BigFatBoy, for the clarification. That helps a lot.

By doing lots of searching, I found the answer to my original post.

      http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/unable-to-backup-in-windows-7-receiving-error-code/83cd69a7-9212-43cf-9ffa-1813b25c3f93

Item ‘vi’ on this list, Windows Backup, was set to ‘Disabled’ on my computer. I reset it to ‘Manual’ rebooted, and ran a quick test. It worked just fine. So that problem is now solved.

But this certainly is a bare-bones program, with not much info for guidance other than what I have gotten on this forum. I had to really search to find the files I backed up. So I think I will look for an alternative.

I found the manage space screen. But there were only two options: Retain only the most recent image, or delete all system images. Nether allow me to retain more than one. So I am confused (again).

My D: drive is a different physical drive than C:. It is not a partition on the drive with C:.

You said go to System Protection. Did you mean System Restore? I did the ‘non-standard’ backup on 5/6. I noticed the problem when I tried my second backup on 5/16. I have 16 System Restore points in between, with lots of program installations! I would like to see if someone has experience with this problem and/or the error messages before I go down this path.

Those particular commands are under “Control PanelNetwork and InternetNetwork and Sharing CenterAdvanced sharing settings” in Windows 7.

      Dave:

Found that screen. Thanks. Those two items were already checked for ‘Home or Work (current profile)’. And I assume that under ‘HomeGroup connections’ if I check “Use user accounts and passwords….’ that will disconnect me from the HomeGroup?

I also noted there is a ‘Password protected sharing’, and mine is checked to ‘Turn on….’. I could not find any help for this topic, so not sure what that really does.

      You said:

      >> In essence, you turn on Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing and it is enabled<<

Where do you find these commands?

You understand my backup system perfectly. I use an external USB drive which is connected to my XP. I can access it from any of my computers (as long as the XP is on, of course). The only problem, if you can call it that, is that using Windows Backup & Restore requires the HomeGroup password if I try to access it via the network. Other backup programs that I use do not have that restriction.

Incidentally I just got my new Win 7 desktop up and running. I used Windows Backup & Restore to create an image backup on an internal hard drive of this new computer. The password is not asked for when using a direct connection–only when accessing via a network.

It will probably grow much larger when you start doing Windows Updates or installing programs into XP mode.

Both Virtual PC and XP Mode can still be downloaded for Windows 7:

      Download Windows Virtual PC

      Download Windows XP Mode

      Bruce

Are you saying I could just DELETE what is on my C: drive, and it will probably be OK?

If that did not work, I could just reinstall from the links you provided, I guess.

How do you set that up without HomeGroup?

      Dave:

As I said, the network access was not a problem; just the Backup/Restore. From my searching, it appears that it requires the HomeGroup password. I’ll know more when I get my new Win 7 machine completely installed and try a backup.

I did not have time to read all of your blog, but I did read the one about the problem you had. How does the Registry Cleaner you used compare to something like CCleaner, which also does the Registry? And excuse my ignorance, but what is Chowder?

I made a note of your blog address and will read the rest when I have more time.

      Harry, good morning.
Hi ! hi ! Let us not argue on age here, but I have been retired for 22 years now. That gives you an idea on who is “senior”.

      Jean:

I capitulate! I am only retired 16 years. Hope I make it to 22.

      Hi Harry,

This is my first posting so I hope I read your thread correctly. Does the network user/PW prompt only happen on the backup attempt or is it with any networking attempt such as getting to a file share?

      -Commander Dave

      Dave:

It only happens for me when I attempt to access the Windows built -in Backup & Restore when I want to back up to a drive on the network, or attached to another computer on the network. Otherwise, in least in my case, I have no problem accessing my network. At this point I only have one Win 7 computer on my network, so don’t know if it occurs wen you have more than one Win 7 computer on the network.

    • in reply to: Windows Easy Transfer questions #1450733

      Wavy:

On my XP I created those subfolders in Program Files. It’s easy to do. I also use a similar structure in the Start Menu Program list. It just saves searching if I need to access some of the program related files, because the name of the manufacturer and the name of the program are often not the same, which makes it harder to find the actual program.

But because Windows 7 has tighter control on these things than XP does, is why I asked the questions.

In either case, I would only use Easy Transfer for the document related files.

      Joe:

Back in Message #11, you said:

      >>You don’t want data to go in “Program Files” or “Program Files (x86)”. Those folders and sub-folders are much more locked down. A program may not be able to access or modify data in those folders.<<

As I said earlier, I will put all my data in legal data files.

But that brings up a related question. Because I have lots of programs, on my XP I create sub-folders under 'Program Files', such as 'Communication', 'Hardware', 'Health', 'Photo', 'Reference', 'Utilities', etc., and them place the relevant programs in the correct subfolder.

Will Windows 7 accept my subfolders for programs, or do I have to have one very long list of programs, which is the Windows default method?

      Harry
