Thanks so much for the info. Did not know about the reliability monitor; it shows updates successful. No other indication of security update failures. Do not know why they do not appear in Definition Updates —but this is Windows 10.

I had not seen it. Thanks for mentioning it and I printed it. Registry settings are quite helpful if needed; will leave them alone. The GP settings that I have are the ones you suggest.

Lo and behold, the Feature Deferral dropdown is again shown after the first Win update on this pc today. Now at build —.657. Fortunately no update suspects were installed. I will not Pause updates, but use the gp settings at 2 for updates.

With Win10 I suppose I should not be too obsessed with minor issues as long as it generally performs as it should. There will always be an update that may fix what is broken and might break something that is working.

Many thanks for taking time to compose your guide’ really do not know what I would have done without it. There are suggestions, but they are scattered here and there. It arrived at a most opportune time for me as I was just trying to get this pc set up – it sat in a box for 2 weeks before I wanted to deal with Win10. The first probematic issue seems to be updating and how to control it. And thanks again for helping with my issues.

Really regret that I wasted your time with this trivial but confusing issue. I did not look at build # until EP’s post. Maybe that is why no one else is having the problem.

Anyway WU is supposed to run tomorrow; will not pause updating any longer. Maybe newer build will install then; if the updates crash the system, I made a backup. If newer build is not installed, will use the media tool.

It is —-.418. Maybe it will update to —.592 when I get the first updates tomorrow.

I did make a media creation tool usb. Will have to find out how to use (would this be a refresh, restart, etc) it if WU does not install the newer build. W10 is new to me.

      Thanks.

Thanks, no hurry. From what I gather, registry edits seemed to work for some (not all) 1903 users who had this problem before KB 4522355 was released.

Maybe the whole issue will be resolved once I get a quality update or so. But, at least, with the registry edit, I can reduce <365 if needed.

My settings are as you describe. NO settings under Windows Update for Business; the list of the 3 settings show “Not Configured”.

Under Windows Update (general), the only configuration is “Configure Automatic Updates” set to 2. There are NO other configured settings; all others show “Not Configured”.

    • in reply to: Disappearing "Feature Update Deferral" option v1909 #2177135

I have no deferrals set in Group Policy. I set the Feature Update via the gui option on the Advanced Settings of the Windows Update Page. I did not even know that there were deferral settings in Group Policy until you mentioned it, so when I followed the instructions the other day, I left the Quality deferral at 0 and set the Feature deferral to 365 (my mistake- should have left it at 0).

I am sorry, but I do not know how to “unconfigure” a setting that is set to “Not Configured”. I went into GP (general and for business). ALL settings are set to “Not Configured”.

Think there is a setting in the registry that I can make to lower the deferral from 365.

    • Where is this setting in group policy? I used the GUI drop down when I set it.

    • Oops, sorry. Misunderstood that “Business” was in Group Policy. Checked this section – nothing is configured there. I also “unconfigured” the download setting for the time being since “Pause” seems to be controlling anyway.

      Thanks for bearing with me.

    • The panel for “Update and Security” has no Business settings folder – just Windows Update.

I changed Feature Deferral in the Advanced Options screen -Pause Updates section. The Quality Update box is still there, but not the Feature Update. As I mentioned in my amended prior post, it was a problem apparently in 1903. I will post in general forum to see if anyone has had this issue in 1909 so I will not bother you anymore with this minor issue.

      Thanks for your help.

    • The Feature Update Deferral was there until I made the entry in Windows Update. All other settings in Windows Update section are “not configured”. I do not know how to access the Windows Update for Business.

I may just have to reinstall windows to get it back.

PS: After sending this, searched the forum. Woody had an article in Computerworld 11/7/2019 – “Disappearing Windows Update deferral pane suddenly reappears”. The article explains that the deferral option may disappear if one enters a different number. This pertained to 1903 and may apply to 1909 as well. May be fixed with an update. May post something in the general forum to see if anyone else has had the issue.

    • Thanks for the response.

I carefully followed your instructions in sec 3, Group Policy Settings. I set only the “2” notify/download. I did not make any other changes using the Group Policy Settings.

I left the Pause updates to 7 as that seemed to be the instruction before the Defcon setting was raised to 3. My mistake.

When paused updates install, will the optional ones install as well?

    • PKCano, thank you so much for your Update Settings guide. It was invaluable in helping me set up a new W10 pc. The update process is so much more complex that W10’s predecessors.

I began setting up a new W10 pro desktop last week using your recommended settings in your guide. Fortunately, the pc has 1909 installed so I will not have to worry about a version update for awhile.

Pause Updates: It was set to 7 days as set up from Dell

Defer Feature Updates: I changed it to 365 I think; thought I could change it again if needed. This option later disappeared.

Defer Quality Updates: Left at 0.

Used gpedit to change update setting to “2”.

      Questions:

      1. After setting that, the Defer Feature Updates setting disappeared entirely. Do not know why.
      2. On Monday, Windows Update screen showed about 8 or so pending/available updates. I did not take a photo of the screen. Then the list no longer appears on the screen. I do not know why as the updates were not installed. WUshowhide shows no updates to hide. Is this because “pause updates” is set?
      3. When the Pause Updates day arrives, how do I know what will be installed? In the last paragraph, you state that you can see what updates are pending, but none show up on this pc.
      4. At minimum I should install Svc Stack 4538674 and cum update 4532691 from February. How is this done if there is no list to select from?

I have spent a number of hours trying to resolve these questions, but my searches have been in vain so far.

Why did MS make the update process so convoluted when it was simple, although imperfect, before?

Thanks for your assistance to a W10 novice.

    • Since my initial post last evening, I have restored both laptops to before the svc stack update. Before the restore, one of the laptops would hang (no evidence of hd activity). The other would eventually log into the user a/c after 10 to 15 minutes; a couple of times during the long delay, it messed up wireless network (windows could not find wireless network).

Since the restore, both seem to be okay. The 3rd pc, a desktop, seems to have the same problem, although not so pronounced. May do a system restore on it.

I installed the SSU by itself on Dec 6 after installing the Nov rollup as seemed to be the general instruction – clear out the pending updates (Nov rollup in my case). I then restarted each pc about 10 to 15 minutes after installation. All seemed well after the reboot; it was after a cold start/boot that issues started occurring.

There are no AVs on any of the pcs except MSE. I have had no update problems with any of them until now; suppose I have been fortunate although I have no idea what would have happened without advice from this site.

Starting them in safe mode and then in normal mode had no effect. I did use safe mode for system restore.

      Will see what happens now.
