dg1261,

I ordered the connection that you recommended from Amazon and have been using it since mid-February with no problems at all. Mouse is not connected as I use wireless mouse.

Thanks for your recommendation. A decent keyboard is saved from the trash.

The connector is PS/2 (6-pin). I will order the connector you suggested as it seems to have many good reviews on Amazon. This keyboard was made in Thailand before everything moved to China so it is probably 20+ years old. I do not think it was ever used.

Thanks so much.

Adapters: Need suggestions on reliable connectors that “convert” the round 6(?) pin connectors to usb as most newer pcs do not have the round pin connectors. I have looked on Amazon, but users seem to have problems with them – some apparently causing pc crashes. I have a 20+ yr old Dell keyboard, although not as good as IBM, is better than many new ones.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I appreciate the Dell forum link. I will deal with it tomorrow. Strange that it happened on 5/27 as the other posters. I had not done any updates since end of April – other than Defender updates.

Thanks

I think I narrowed the problem to Dell Update program although I have the latest version and that version has been installed for several months. When I open Dell Update and do a check/scan, it throws off the update error messages for each usb on the pc. Until today, I had not opened Dell Update in a month.

I did uncheck run in background so that might help. If not, I will uninstall it.

Thanks

Susan, thank you so much for taking the time to fixing the problem. However, no email link works although I have never had the occasion to use email.

I was particularly interested in your article about non-Windows updates – especially Bios. I was thinking of asking a forum question about this. It seems that about every 2 months, Dell has an update Bios for my pc’s which are about 2 years old. It appears from that the recommendation is to apply Bios updates. However, sometimes the description that Dell provides about an update is not a problem that I am having.

Before these Windows 10 pc’s, I doubt that I made more than 5 Bios updates to Windows pc’s since Windows 95 (1995 – 2020).

Again, thanks for your help with the Plus problem.

How do I read the full article?
I have been a subscriber for a number of years; my Plus membership expires Feb 2024.

This newsletter says I must be a Plus member to read all articles (except the first one). If I click on become a Plus member, it informs me that I am already a member. I logged out and back in; no change.

This is the only way to communicate with Ask Woody as no email support link works.

Is there a fix planned or it just my account? I go to the site about every day and this is the first time that I have had a problem.

I am sorry this might not be the appropriate means of communicating, but it is the only one available to me at present.

Thanks for any help.

I do not get previews either. If this is a preview, it is the first one. Generally all that shows up to install is the CU and Defender updates plus another version of KB4023057 that I hide.

• in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: Ready or not, it’s time to update #2397956

Thanks. Will hide this.

I did not see it in the master install list for October. As for search on this site, I did not scroll down far enough so I thought it found no results as it first displayed ways to do an advanced search. On google, I probably had 3 zeros, not 2.

• in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: Ready or not, it’s time to update #2397945

This month I have been offered KB5005463:

“2021-10 Update for Windows 10 Version 21H1 for x64-based Systems (KB5005463)”

What is this patch as I cannot find anything about it in this forum or even google search. I have a generic one-year old Win10pro system that has no special needs.

Maybe I have missed something, but I can find nothing on it.

Thanks for information on this. Meanwhile, I will hide it.

PKCano, thanks so much for the explantion of Enablement. Along the way I missed discussion of the term as it relates to Windows 10.

• in reply to: MS-DEFCON 4: July updates should be installed #2380652

PKCano, I am sorry that I do not understand this as I am in this situation — I have 2004 pending the July update & plan to install 21H1 soon.

I am not familiar with “Enablement” or with “switches” referred to in your 2nd par.

Thanks for your understanding and help.

Use Edge instead. Did not work with Chrome for me either; I tried several times.

• in reply to: Dell computers put at risk #2363386

I searched for the .sys file on c: drive on my Dell pc; file was not found even though I have used Dell Update. I have not made the suggested bios update.

There are details from Dell on this file providing ways to remedy the problem. One method was to delete the file per its instructions as follows:

• Option 2: Manually remove the vulnerable dbutil_2_3.sys driver:
Step A: Check the following locations for the dbutil_2_3.sys driver file

• C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp
• C:\Windows\Temp
Step B: Select the dbutil_2_3.sys file and hold down the SHIFT key while pressing the DELETE key to permanently delete.
Hope this helps.

As you predicted, after installing KB5001649, KB5000802 did disappear from pending updates after rebooting.

Thanks
