    • in reply to: Batch file to delete Edge cookie? #2646392

Correct, I only want to delete my corp VPN’s cookies rather than all cookies.

I will try this.  Thanks for your assistance.

FYI:  after attempting to enter *.abc.com and getting an error message, I did some internet research and found that to have that effect you must enter [*.]abc.com in the box.  There was no info on this in the Edge help that I could find.  But it seems to have done the trick.

      Thanks again!

    • in reply to: Making sense of Windows 11’s 2023 updates #2628462

Appreciate this round-up, Lance. Nice to have it all in one place, don’t know how we would find it otherwise.

Any guesses why I am still back at 22H2? When it tells me “You’re up to date.” Last checked today at 2:19.

don’t have pause updates turned on.  I have Windows 11. Thanks for any hints.

I was also stuck on 22H2 until today, when checking for updates finally revealed the existence of 23H2 on my almost-new Lenovo PC.

I seem to be stuck on Win 11 22H2.  Check for updates finds nothing.  Today I was able to install this update: 2024-01 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for Windows 11, version 22H2 for x64 (KB5033920) but can’t get anything relating to 23 H 2.  Pause is off.  This is a two month old Lenovo Yoga 6.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

    • in reply to: SSD Reliability degraded but still has 94% of life #2586011

      Thanks for all the help.

      1. I ran chkdsk /r, which completed successfully, but that did not clear the msg.
      2. CrystalDiskInfo: The rest of the SMART data it reported was all green, only the first entry about critical warnings was red.
      3. I downloaded the WD dashboard, which said a) the NVM system was degraded; b) agreed with CDI that there were 463K power cycles (!); and c) reported a phenomenal 91587755866489574258136806589572 media and data integrity errors.
      4. I have asked for an estimate to replace the SDD from a local computer repair shop (I do not want to open up the laptop myself).  Once I get the estimate I’ll have to decide whether it is worth it to fix a 3-yr-old computer or to buy new.
    • in reply to: Why would you use OneNote at all? #2499941

Thank you for this article. I am still not persuaded. I used OneNote to plan a new college course I am teaching, but after a couple of months of adding info I decided it was no better than MS Word for that purpose. You can link Excel sheets in Word as well, use page breaks instead of OneNote’s tabs, and find things quickly via search. In addition, you can format tables and charts much better in Word than in OneNote.

I just don’t see a use case that justifies the time investment of learning another program.

    • in reply to: Ewaste or usable – week 3 #2448286

Even if just browsing the news I want a real computer.  I control-click the headlines of the articles I want to read so they load behind the scenes in other windows while I continue to look at the headline page for more.  That way, when I am ready to read the article, it is all there are ready to go.  My iPad is just not as fast; articles have to continue loading once you have switched to their window.

Also, since I write for a living, a real keyboard is essential.  I have a bluetooth keyboard for my iPad but it is not as good as a laptop keyboard, and I have to watch more carefully for mistakes.

    • in reply to: Macrium Free Misses Folder in Backup #2368061

Okay I figured it out.  I had mislabeled the file folder and was looking at a backup for a different computer than I thought.  Sorry for the fuss everybody.  I appreciate the efforts to help.

    • in reply to: Macrium Free Misses Folder in Backup #2367975

Ah, I forgot the paid version is different.

Maybe the Photos folder has been redirected to another disk?

      cheers, Paul

No, not redirected to another disk.

    • in reply to: HP laptop periodically freezes #2359273

      Thanks all.

As suggested, I have installed CoreTemp (running cool so far) and done a full disk backup to an external drive just in case.  HP Assistant reports no firmware updates needed.  I have restarted the PC again after logging off by holding down the power button.  The fan has definitely been turning since I can hear it working when the PC heats up.

Will get a can of air and blow at the heat ducts, although since the PC is only 4 months old that is a long shot.

Model is HP ENVY  x360 Laptop – 15-ds1063cl

PS.  Just killed an ant on the laptop.  I hope this problem did not result from one or more ants sneaking in via a heat vent!

    • in reply to: Do I really need 1Gbs in my home network? #2344839

With three of us working from home, earlier this week we had three video conferences going on at the same time, our Sonos playing music, and the Roku playing NASA TV for the Mars landing on XFINITY 100 Mbps service distributed by wifi.  No hiccups, no issues.

    • in reply to: My neighbours’ media devices #2337420

Are your neighbor’s devices connected to your router, or are you connected to your neighbor’s router?  Is this intentional?  Is there a password set on the wifi network?

    • in reply to: Brother printer “driver unavailable” suddenly #2295773

I can print from the same laptop with a USB cable attached to the printer.  Unfortunately, that is not a viable long-term solution.  When I disconnect the cable, I can still see the printer on the network, and scan from it, but print jobs just back up in the queue and on the printers & scanners page it still says “driver unavailable”.

      any other ideas?  Thanks.

will try to change the mute setting..  thx

    • I think you mean 4:33 pm EDT, not the 6:33 in the headline.  That’s what the text you pasted in says.

    • in reply to: Security risks: Wired Ethernet vs. Wi-Fi #2265471

In my view, this answer may be technically correct, but is not helpful, especially to non-technical people.

      • How many of us really have an NSA van parked in front of our house snooping on our wifi?  Why would we be such a valuable target?
      • If we have a relatively recent router whose firmware does not contain the KRACK vulnerability, and have set a decent complex wifi password, the odds of my wifi being decrypted are so infinitesimal as to be inconsequential.
      • Do I really care if 5,000 years from now the server farm dedicated to snooping on me will finally decrypt my wifi and be able to view my cat videos?
      • Making blanket statements such as “ethernet is safer than wifi” may persuade people to 1) not use wifi, depriving themselves of a real convenience; you can’t use an iPad, for example, without it.  My internet drop is in an inconvenient place; without wifi, I would either have to use the internet in a closet near the front door, or pay an electrician to install ethernet in multiple places I might want to plug in; or 2) not bother with wifi encryption at all because “it’s easy to crack anyway.”
      • Statistically the largest percentage of computer intrusions come from pfishing attacks, which work just as well over ethernet as wifi.  Those who are concerned about security should focus on the biggest threats first.
      • For the vast majority of people in the vast majority of situations, wifi is just as safe as ethernet.
