• So I was looking at that Don’t Install KB5046687/KB5046705 link and it appeared there were no problems with 8.1 with the updates. I’m holding off until the go ahead to install the November updates but is it safe to say that Firefox ESR isn’t crashing on Win 8.1? Thank you.

Installed Win 8.1 .Net and the SMQR updates and my Firefox 115.18.0 ESR browser is working fine with no tab crashes or other issues. 🙂

I think the link to the CVE is incorrect. I believe it should be https://www.cve.org/CVERecord?id=CVE-2024-9680. The link has the CVE listed double.

Well, now Microsoft admits it can’t fix the issue for Windows 10 KB5034441 automatically.

      https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/windows-it-pro-blog/windows-server-2012-r2-extended-security-updates/ba-p/3976610

Since we are using Server 2012 R2 for updating Win 8.1, does that mean we could have 3 more years of updates for Win 8.1? Thanks to all who contributed to continue this support!

Did you check the Spam/Junk folders, just in case?

Thank you, PKCano. Yes I did check my Spam/Junk folders.

Did anyone get the text for the change from DefCon 2 to 4? I didn’t get a text this morning like I normally do when the change from 2 to 4 happens. Thanks.

    • Microsoft has released a new ESU Licensing Preparation Package KB5017220 for the extension of Win8.1/Windows Server 2012 R2 ESU on Aug. 24, 2022.

I just want to make sure is this KB required to continue running the Win 8 install script to install updates? TIA

With only 1 update remaining after this update of Win 8.1 🙁

December patches installed with no problems to report on Win 8.1. 🙂

Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: 2022-12 Security and Quality Rollup for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.6.2, 4.7, 4.7.1, 4.7.2, 4.8 for Windows 8.1 for x64 (KB5021093)

Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: 2022-12 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB5021294)

With the issues going on with Windows 10, for instance the hidparse.sys issue this month, I am sure going to miss the stability of Windows 8.1 when it is eol next month. 🙁

Thankfully, this month was far less uneventful. After the updates were installed and the system restarted, the system went to the desktop with no problems. Therefore, October patches installed with no problems to report on Win 8.1. 🙂

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 4: A well-behaved September #2483722

I can also join that the experience with installing this month’s updates was anything but “calm”

September patches installed with some problems to report on Win 8.1

When the computer restarted after updates were completed, the desktop froze with a black screen. I actually had to do a cold reboot but when I did that the system did successfully boot to the desktop.

Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: 2022-09 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB5017367)

Installation Successful: Windows successfully installed the following update: 2022-09 Servicing Stack Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB5017398)

Thank you abbodi86. This is also a lesson for me that you can’t trust the Update History under Windows Update. 😮 When I went to the Installed Updates in the Control Panel, I found out that KB5016372, the .NET update, was already installed with the August updates.
