Would this Hardware Monitor software app give me an indication of a failing cooling fan or a defective power supply.

I have a Dell Precision T3500 desktop tower that used to run quiet when it is not working hard.  But last year the fan sounds like it is running in a “normal” mode and not a high speed extra cooling speed.  I’ve cleared off the intake vents and opened up the tower and used a blower to clear out the dust.  I’m certain it is not over heating.

I really think it is a defective fan or the power supply.  But I don’t have any blue-screen-of-death or unexpected rebooting of the computer.

      Thanks.

In regards to your “second” issue. From my experience that is pretty common issue. Why would you want to move the FULL backup to a different location than where you plan to created a Differential or incremental backup? Is it a space issue or a security issue? Just curious.

For my non-business use (I do have the paid version) I use a different external HDD at the beginning of each month. I start with a FULL and then add a DIFF or INCRED backup each week. I disconnect the external HDD after each backup for security reasons. I run all the backups manually (this maybe what you call ONE-OFF).

My understanding is the reason you need them all (each FULL set) together is when you have a restore operation I needs to search each backup in each set to find the latest copy of each program/data file.

    • I use StopUpdates10 (3rd party app) that I learned about here on AskWoody in their paid newsletter. It’s available for download free on the OlderGeeks download site (also recommended by AskWoody).   It is better than the Windows Pro OS update settings options.   Your options with this app is broken down into 3 options:  block major updates; block monthly updates; and block routine updates.  Instead of permanent blocking, you can set a date in which the block will expire which would allow the type of updates you want to get.

You can read about it at Greatis dot com slash stopupdates10

I have a Dell Precision laptop (model M4700) that updated today from v1909 to v2004.  In the Check for Updates screen, under options for v2004, it told me that I may need updates to a AMD audio driver (as I recall) and a Western Digital driver.  That PC is off at this time, but I’m pretty sure I remembered those correctly.  I did NOT check the options to install those drivers.  So that might be a hint for you if you need to investigate further.

While I don’t have the symptoms that you are having, I did find some information that iCloud can effect Windows 10 search function.  I accidentally manually triggered the feature update to version 2004 a few days ago.  Ever since then I’ve had the problem. However, I’m not finding that I have iCloud installed.  I have checked the Add/Remove programs panel as well as the Task Manager’s list of programs and services.  I’m kinda tempted to install the latest iCloud to see if that fixes my program.  I don’t have any Apple products or services that I can think of.

My Search problem has been resolved.  Yesterday’s Microsoft cumulative 2004-10 update fixed the problem. I usually wait 3 to 4 weeks before allowing those updates to take place but I let this one go thru in hopes it would correct the problem.

I found the culprit… My cloud backup software. Installed a newer version and all is normal.

I just realized you didn’t say it was iCloud.  Which cloud service was it?  I have iDrive and OneDrive. Both of those programs say they are up to date.

    • Well, whatever it was, a new battery seems to have fixed it. A “Poder” Non-OEM, it’s made totally in China; it’s very thinly etched into the plastic, almost invisible, and sold out of a warehouse a few miles from me. $35 all told. Thanks to all, especially Doriel.

Since you mentioned that you have a UPS.  Here is what I do to make my LT batteries last for years.  I charge the battery to 40% and then take it out for long term storage. I use a UPS on one of the battery outlets to power my laptop. That prevents the wear and tear on a battery that is trickle charged 24/7.  This has worked on the HP and Dell LT’s I have owned.  I’ve read that some LT’s won’t power up without a battery inserted. I only charge up the LT battery to full when I’m going to need it or when it’s likely we will have a power outage due to the weather. Granted a $35 battery may not be worth the trouble to do this, but a battery made in china may be safer to not be left unattended.

I use the same UPS to protect my flat screen TV and use a long extension cord over to my LT.

      Wavy,
Yes, that should get rid of those thumbnails if that is what he wants to do.

As a sidenote, on my old and slow laptop (that won’t accept more than 4GB of RAM memory) it helps the browser in not stalling as much.

    • in reply to: My Task Bar Does Not Work #1585808

You can turn off the thumbnails feature:
      Open Control Panel
      Internet Options
Click on TABS (located in the middle of the window)
Take out the checkmark: SHOW PREVIEWS FOR INDIVIDUAL TABS IN THE TASKBAR
      Click OK
      Restart your computer.

    • in reply to: My Task Bar Does Not Work #1585530

I assume you have Restarted your computer?

Then I would delete your Windows temporary files and internet temporary files. If you are not sure how to do that, run Windows DISK CLEANUP and put in the check for the above 2 types of files.

Then Restart again and see if everything is working like before.

The “small versions” that you mention are thumbnails of your running programs. If you close a thumbnail, it will close that program, browser tab or window.

You could change the desktop background color or a theme that uses one color for the taskbar and a different color for the background. I had to do this with my Firefox browser.

    • in reply to: Number Lock doesn’t work #1539279

I have a Win 7 desktop that was upgraded to Win 10. The NumLock did not turn on my default when starting up the Win 10 computer. The button still worked, it just wasn’t on by default. i tried the registery fix and also made sure the BIOS was set correctly. The fix I found was to turn OFF the “Fastboot” feature of Win 10. That setting is found in the advanced power settings.

Earle, that is a bug in Adobe Reader X that shows up in some windows 7 machines using IE9. The adobe patch is:
      http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/928/cpsid_92870.html

Another work-around is to go into Adobe’s preferences on the Internet tab and UNcheck “Open PDF in browser.”

I thought I would post this in case other people are looking for a solution so thay can stick with Adobe. Personally I use Nitro Reader.
