I appreciate all the information in the prior posts.  I have the same problem as many of the commenters in that I bought a Windows 10 machine when I could no longer update Windows (I don’t remember the version – 7?).  Shortly after I got that machine and did moved my data and applications MS announced Windows 11 and provided the tool to check the ability to upgrade to 11.  I wasn’t going to do that immediately, but wanted to verify that my new machine was going to support Windows 11.  To say the least, I was very disappointed (mad!) that I would have to buy another new machine in a short time.

I would really like MS to lay out a roadmap and avoid forcing new hardware requirements on us.  MS could have told the manufacturers that after X date they need to be on the new hardware standard.  When I buy a new machine I want MS and the manufacturer to certify that it will be able to be upgraded to Windows 12.  Tell us now what the specs will be for Windows 12.

The expense of buying a new machine is bad enough, but the time and cost of moving software and data and disposing of the old machine securely is too much for retired people with only moderate technical knowledge.

Setting the option to notify about updates and then manually doing the update has resolved this problem.

You confirmed my thinking on this subject.

I do have the latest version of FireFox now, but I think the update process could have caused the freeze.  That is what I am trying to determine.  I also think I have the current video driver.  The computer is an HP Pavilion 590 with 12 GB of memory.

Windows 10 Version 21H2 with the 2022-04 Cumulative Update.

I had the FireFox set to update automatically when not in use.  I’ve now changed that, so we’ll see whether the problem occurs again.

      Thanks for the replies.
