AskWoody LoungerJune 15, 2018 at 4:59 pm in reply to: Win10 version 1803 declared “fully available,” throwing Update for Business under the bus #198159Not exactly.
Windows 7 was all I needed, but I considered it a bit risky given what MS was doing. 1511 was Win10, yet close enough to Win7, and I managed to clean it up of all the Cortana, Edge, apps, telemetry and avoid all the useless stuff that MS keeps piling on it.
IMO it’s the optimal thing to do. I have the ISO and the steps to redo the installation and customization and bring it back to what it is now in case I need to and I do weekly backups. No patches, no upgrades, no hassles. I have all apps I need — all UWP and apps are useless.

AskWoody LoungerJune 15, 2018 at 4:45 pm in reply to: Win10 version 1803 declared “fully available,” throwing Update for Business under the bus #198150Oh, no, it’s MUCH, MUCH, MUCH worse than that.
AI will control everything you do, all options you have, will “educate” you, will indoctrinate you. And you won’t know it and won’t be able to do anything about it.

AskWoody LoungerJune 15, 2018 at 4:39 pm in reply to: Win10 version 1803 declared “fully available,” throwing Update for Business under the bus #198147As you yourself say, the problem is not with 1803, but with MS. But 80-90% of it is (1) useless stuff that forces a learning curve devoid of benefits (2) all sorts of spying, privacy and loss of control aspects that should have never been tolerated .

While all of you were dedicating yourself to constantly update, upgrade and fix messups I stayed with public release version 1511, WU disabled and doing weekly backups. No problems, undisrupted work, no new c..p i have no use for.
I consider keeping up with Windows masochism.

AskWoody LoungerI did not say it was true, I said that is the current thinking. But they dk what businesses need either and they no longer have the competence or will to find out and deliver.
The vast majority of tech corporations today are focused almost exclusively on rent income: how to squeeze money from customers without producing any goods or services. Facebook and Google live entirely off monetizing user data which they practically steal. They have turned users into addicts in return for violating their privacy for profit.
It’s a much easier business if you can make lots of money out of doing practically nothing than if you have to provide goods or services that users need. And if you can manipulate and exploit them by hiding it in algorithms, you’ve got it made. Hence the focus on AI.

AskWoody LoungerOf course they did not do a good job for businesses either. In fact, I think that Win10 is much worse for businesses than individual users, although the former have more leverage to defer the Win10 nonsense than the latter.
What I meant was that had they had some sort of strategy based on business, they wo notuld have left the consumers alone and come up with a Win10aaS for them. But, of course, they HAD NO strategy. When it became clear that Win10 was too much trouble and the migration too slow, they just gave upon consumers (after making their lives miserable) and NOW they are saying “business first”. But it wasn’t planned. They just ASS-U-MEd that they can impose their will — that’s what monopolists do — and when that did not work they dropped it, because they are no longer knowledgeable of user needs and incapable of satisfying them.
They did the same with mobile.

AskWoody LoungerAnybody with any confidence in the outcome of this ought to have his head examined.
The pattern is all there and systematic: MS has a good thing, messes it up and drops it.
This is what I predict will happen to this iteration too.
The only thing that might slow down the collapse is the herd mentality, gullibility and lack of computer know-how of the current generation of users.
