    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: Should you patch? It depends. #2596679

I have wondered about this for a while:

Every month before updating I run a system Image using Windows Backup & Restore (Windows 7).  At the end it always ask if I want to make a system repair disc.  Is there any reason to make a new sys repair disc every month?  How often should I make one?

I might have figured this out & am trying it now.  So don’t go crazy replying just yet.  I might have further questions, if so I’ll ask.

      Thank You

I have not, but I am going to now.  Thks.

I would be very interested in this approach.

My wife & I have similar systems.  An SSD C: drive with the operating system, a D:drive encrypted using Bitlocker with client files etc. & E: Drive with non confidential files.  Plus an 8 tb external drive (H) which we used for file history for D: & E: except a couple of years ago it stopped automatically saving the encrypted D: drive in file history (says it cannot read it even though it can and did before).  This external drive is also encrypted.  We were also backing up daily to smaller (2tb) external drives that we rotate weekly.

So something like you are suggesting might be just what we need.

Didn’t Susan’s Sept 9th email recommend setting the Windows 10 target update 22H1?  Should the target be set for 21H2 or 22H1?

I am currently on Win. 10 21H2, but before allowing the Sept. updates reset my target to 22H1, although the computer stayed on 21H2.  Should I reset my target back to 21H2?

    • in reply to: Easy to Use Backup program will not start. #2404542

      More Information:

The User Account Control notice is yellow.

It occurs to us that in the past we did get a notice, where the user account control notice was blue but basically said “Do you want to allow this app  from publisher  XXX to make changes to your device.”  Then “Verified User XXX

I think we were so use to clicking yes that we never thought about it to the message changed color and referred to an unknown publisher.  Still it seems funny that this changed all of a sudden, so I am interest in any thoughts or guidance.

    • in reply to: Easy to Use Backup program will not start. #2404465

      The notice, is:

User Account Control:  (I assume from Windows Security, I am wondering if a recent virus threat update from Wednesday night or Thursday morning caused it not to recognize the publisher)

It says:  “Do you want to allow this app from an unknown publisher to make changes to your device?”  Options are “Yes  No”   At that point you have three options, click yes, or No or close the box before you can do anything else.

The file location is:  C:\program files(x86) EaseUS\Todo Backup\bin\loader.exe    It’s date is from 2019 which is about when I would have installed the program.  This is also the file the short cute starts.

Here is a link to EasytoUse website:  https://www.easeus.com/backup-software/  We are running paid for copies but have not updated to a newer version since we bought it.

I am still on 2004.  I am planning now to move to 20H2.  Just wondering, since Edge (which I do not use, I use Chrome) is changing would it be better to do the normal updates first, then change to 20H2 or just do the 20H2 update which I assume would automatically give me the new updates anyway?

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 4 – February updates trigger few issues #2349837

Anyone using File History might want to check that it really is running.  Among other backups, my wife and I both have 8 TB external drives attached that File History updates on to every hour, and we tend to ignore it.  Every so often I do bring it up from Control Panel to mage sure it has not been turned of and yesterday  I did that on both our computers only to discover that while it was on, the last backup was on March 1, which happens to be the same day we did the February patches.  I clicked run now and it ran and appears to be running fine now.

I suspect that the February updates did something that while leaving File History on stopped it from running backups.  Anyone using file history might want to check to see when it ran last.  If it has been a while try clicking run now, then watch for the next few days to make sure it keeps running.

    • in reply to: Excel Charts only partly print #2199916

      Kathy,

Sorry to be so slow to respond.

Everything worked on my old computer using the old version, documents print fine, just not the graphs, either jpg or pdf.

However:  The work around copying to Word worked, which lead me to discover that coping to another worksheet also worked, the first time.  Which sort of accidentally let me to a very easy work around.  If before I print the chart, in the print settings, before printing I switch to portrait, then back to Landscape, the chart prints perfectly.  But I do have to do it each time.

I have no idea why that works, but it does.  Go figure.

Thank you Kathy and Kirsty for your help.

    • in reply to: Excel Charts only partly print #2171098

I am using Office Home & Basic 2019 on Widows 10 version 2003 64 bit.  My old computer where I did not have the problem was Windows 7, with Office 2013 I think.

Each graph is on its own worksheet by itself.  Print Preview shows the whole graph on 1 page, ready to go but when printed it only prints the top left corner of the graph.  On the spread sheet pages there is the option Fit to 1 page by width and tall under page layout then scale to fit but that option is not there for chart sheets, I assume because (based on the print preview) it is only one page.

My work around has been to bring up the print preview, then print screen, then paste into a photo editing program, then cropping it and saving it as a jpg or pdf.

    • In Woody’s book he suggest setting the semi-annual channel to 365 days, but in some posts he shows 150 days?

Also, Quality updates in the book he suggests 30 days, but in some places he suggest 15 days?

      Comments please.  Thank you.

What is involved in creating a simple RSS feed page for my web site?

      So Woody,

According to Amazon.com’s web site, the Kindle Fire is only available in the U.S customers. Don’t you live in Thailand?

    • in reply to: Extract Acrobat 8 Bookmarks #1257979

It appears you know how to extract pages, which can also be0 done using the Documents then extract pages menus btw. I believe that because you have many per file you are loking for a way to automate the process and create several small files. I have no idea how to do that, but did you try using the help menue, then sellecting online support then Knowledge base. I just did that then searched for “Extracting Bookmarks” and there appear to be some posts that might help. On quick review, you may be out of luck unless you can write your own program, which may explain your lack of responses so far, but it is worth a shot.

Maybe now that you are featured in Windows Secrets letter, someone will have some ideas for you.

      Good Luck.
