There are at least 4 security patches that do affect the new Windows 7 operating system: MS09-054, MS09-055, MS09-056 and MS09-059.

Not only that Woody, I have seen Google Chrome use less memory and cpu resources than Firefox on some flash-animated web sites and is sometimes faster in loading pages than Firefox.

Official Chrome 3.0 version is 3.0.195.21 which I have on my XP laptop. Google Chrome is still missing some essential features such as Clearing Browser Cache on Exit and Print Preview, which Firefox/IE/Opera/Safari browsers have. I’m NOT going to print web pages from Chrome without Print Preview.

Chrome 4.0, however in development, will add support for the Mac and Linux platforms.

    • in reply to: Batten down the hatches – beware new patches #59268

Microsoft has written some erroneous information in security bulletin MS09-047 saying the KB968816 Windows Media Format Runtime Updates replace the MS08-076 updates.

Compare the files from MS KB article 968816 and MS KB article 952069

The LOGAGENT.EXE and WMNETMGR.DLL files from KB952069 are NOT included in the KB968816 updates. So the KB968816 updates from MS09-047 do NOT replace the KB952069 updates from MS08-076. The Microsoft security team has yet to correct the information.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 5: Get patched now #59283

The KB973879 Vista patches are for 64bit editions only and are not available for 32bit editions.

Believe it or not, there’s a new Autoplay/Autorun patch released near the end of August: KB971029

This one is newer than KB967715 but KB917029 is not available for Win2000.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 5: Get patched now #59281

WOW WOODY! When was the last time you’ve ever reached MS-DEFCON 5 status?

      @John
: If you do install IE8, install the latest IE8 security update and for Firefox, upgrade to the upcoming Firefox 3.5.3 release which will soon be available later this week.

I’ll be blogging about the upcoming versions of Firefox (3.5.3 and 3.0.14) soon as Mozilla is almost ready to release these security updates for Firefox.

    • in reply to: Should I delete Internet Explorer? #59362

If you are using either Win2000 or WinXP you could safely remove IE using a shareware program called 2000Lite or XPLite from LitePC’s web site.

For those using XP or Vista, upgrade to either IE7 or IE8 and install the latest version of Firefox, Google Chrome or other non-IE browser available.

    • in reply to: Firefox 3.0.13 and 3.5.2 have been released #59387

same here, rc primak. the Firefox versions 3.0.13 and 3.5.2 download links both work correctly on all my machines. don’t know if Bob Parks has attempted to download either or both of the Firefox browsers again or whether or not he has been successful in obtaining them.

do upgrade Java to version 6 Update 15 AND install/update Adobe Flash Player to either version 9.0.246.0 or 10.0.32.18 to resolve the latest security issues with these apps.

    • in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: Get patched now #59401

Forget the old ActiveX Killbit KB960715 update.
What about the latest Killbit MS09-032/KB973346 update? Uh, you do know that KB973346 is cumulative and replaces KB969898, KB960715 and older killbit patches, right?

    • in reply to: Two more IE patches released: stick with Firefox, please #59425

Using Firefox instead of IE is only part of the solution, Woody. They must also install the latest update to Adobe Flash Player as mentioned on Adobe Security Advisory APSA09-04.

Woody, Liz and RC Primak: I would also recommend reading that Adobe security bulletin APSA09-04 and follow the instructions there.

    • in reply to: Another out-of-band Internet Explorer patch #59433

Users should also patch Adobe Flash Player for IE and Firefox as mentioned on this Adobe security advisory:
      http://www.adobe.com/support/security/advisories/apsa09-04.html

This Adobe security bulletin also mentions installing the MS09-034 patch for Internet Explorer. So patching IE is only half the battle won. Patching Adobe Flash Player completes the other half.
