    • in reply to: Compress DB #526125

I guess that is where my quandry lies – I don’t know whether to use VB or VBA. Front end is in VB as I’m loading data from a mainframe application (data is FTP’d to server, then VB script is doing the load of the DB). The scenario is as follows – I load a lot of data (more than 35K records – in one case almost 300K records), and I know that there is a lot of overhead and bloat generated when I load the records. I need to do this *load* at least six different times (with data from six different sources), and would like to compress the DB between loads. Doing the compress manually (between loads) buys me at least 75% space reduction (sometimes more – usually depends on how many records get loaded). I am running this on an NT4 SR6a server using Access 97 and need to keep the total amount of space used to a minimum. The database would be closed at the time of compression as it would be after the *load* of the data.

Try Right mouse click on message -> Save
This should bring up a Save As dialogue box and then you should be able to save the message to any device you want. This does not seem to work for folders, but will work for messages.

    • in reply to: Auto Arrange – default #525542

You might try the following registry setting – AFTER backing up your registry:
      My ComputerHKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionProgram ManagerSettings
      AutoArrange value set to 0

Do you mean other than right mouse click on desktop -> Arrange Icons -> Auto Arrange ?

    • in reply to: how do i get a button off the personal toolbar #524624

Try making changes to the Bookmark called MATH – you apparently did what I did some time back – that is make a copy of the Personal Toolbar Folder, make all kinds of changes but nothing took, took me several days to finally figure out what I did. dizzy Notice that the Toolbar Folder in your screenshot looks like a folder, whereas in mine it looks like a book… shrug

Coinman33 found a real neat freeware for doing just what you want take a look at Explorer Add-On in software finds. Uses the right mouse click feature of Windows Explorer for properties and you can sort the results by name or size.

    • in reply to: Persistent folders #523533

Sorry, I skipped right over that one. The only other thing that I can think of is that somewhere in the registry entires, probably in another application, is a reference to the folders that you are trying to delete.

I came across a folder today that I had created some time ago, and when I went to delete it – nope no can do – somehow the read-only attribute was turned on. Turned off the read-only and I was able to get rid of it. Is it possible that is what has happened to you?

    • in reply to: Strange Printer Port #522942

Don’t see why not – I’ve got an HP All-in-one on a USB port (part of their Delta test), and on one parallel port another type of HP All-in-one (Officejet 600) and on another parallel port an HP 672 printer hooked up (that is actually switched between two computers with an A/B switch and everything works just fine) – it is rather wierd to see three different printers going at the same time – but I have been able to do just that.

    • in reply to: DeskTop Icons Move Mysteriously #522371

      Try the following:
Right mouse click on the desktop
then under Arrange Icons – untick Auto Arrange

This should stop the errant icon movement.

      Hi Phil –
Thanks for the ideas, tried it and the window size did increase some, but nope still opens with a window that is less than optimum. I have not quite figured out how the dialer works either – but it does seem strange spook that IE opens with what appears to be maximized, while NS opens with a VERY small window… shrug. Guess I’ll quit being such a crybaby and click one time to get the window size where I want it to be!

I found that when I “dumped” Norton System Doctor(2001) – my resource problems went away – maybe just a coincidence – but then again who really knows? shrug Since I no longer run Norton System Doctor(2001) everything, and I mean EVERYTHING runs a lot smoother and with fewer crashes! joy
