AskWoody PlusI have three computers with Windows 7 – one continues to update daily the other two require a manual download. Two are laptops (Dell E6540) – one updates and one does not; the other is a Dell Optiplex desktop.

AskWoody PlusMarch 21, 2025 at 11:25 pm in reply to: Outlook Not Updating / News and Interests Not Working #2757448Thought all might be interested to know that early last year – around February 2024 I had a problem downloading some drivers Windows was asking me to load, System Restore seemed to hang up or I did not wait long enough, did a Repair Install which completed but I did not update. Decided instead to remove drive install a cloned drive that I had prepared before the problem occurred and since then all the problems mentioned above have disappeared.

AskWoody PlusWould it be better to remove Security Essentials from Windows 7 and install Windows Defender?
Also have the same issue – however – in my case I have 3 Windows 7 Computer – one has been updating MSE normally – the other two have not. One that updates is a Dell E6540 laptop, the one that does not is identical. Also – the other one that does not update is a Dell Optiplex 7100.
Any suggestions (other than the daily manual update)?

Last night I placed the computer to sleep with Fn and F1. Then I shut the lid. This morning the computer resumed from sleep by opening the lid. Here is Event Viewer. This is what was in the warnings for Kernel Power. Same message but processor #’s that were referenced were 0,2,4,6,1,3,5,7
The speed of processor 4 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 71 seconds since the last report.

AskWoody PlusFebruary 8, 2025 at 8:14 pm in reply to: Computer restarts when trying to wake it up from sleep #2746647Thanks Paul. Last night I disabled the fast boot. But then this morning when I tried to get it to respond from sleep it seemed like it was updating then went to sleep then when I clicked on the on/off button woke up. Here is the Event Viewer text: It took about 8 minutes to update then go to sleep. No errors listed in reliability history.

AskWoody PlusFebruary 8, 2025 at 2:24 pm in reply to: Computer restarts when trying to wake it up from sleep #2746595Would it help to attach information from event viewer? Would it help if I ran a version of chkdsk?
Last night I used Fn key and F1 to put the computer to sleep, then closed the lid. This morning when I opened the lid the hard drive light was blinking but then after a while it stopped. It did NOT restart. It went into sleep mode. Then when I clicked on the on/off button it woke from sleep.
No mention of Windows not being properly shut down

AskWoody PlusFebruary 7, 2025 at 10:59 pm in reply to: Computer restarts when trying to wake it up from sleep #2746398Hi Susan,
I have had that latest BIOS update since 2019.
This seems to happen when I try to resume from sleep by opening the lid after placing the computer to sleep by shutting the lid. Wondering if I should just leave it on all the time and just let the display go to sleep after 30 minutes. I restart it once a week.

AskWoody PlusFebruary 7, 2025 at 9:10 pm in reply to: Computer restarts when trying to wake it up from sleep #2746381Hi Paul,
It is a full reboot – at least I think it is – because it shows the DELL page then seems like it is going through a full report although it takes a lot longer than a normal boot

AskWoody PlusFebruary 7, 2025 at 7:19 pm in reply to: Computer restarts when trying to wake it up from sleep #2746360Thanks for your reply. Actually what happens is the computer restarts instead of waking from sleep saying this: “The previous system shutdown at 1:19:00 AM on 2/7/2025 was unexpected.”
Thinking of setting the hard drive for the laptop to sleep “Never” and restarting once a week.

AskWoody PlusThanks for the detailed instructions. Should it be a blank USB – 8Gb or 16GB? If I have multiple computers with Windows 10 (Dell Latitude E6540) can I use the same USB (if needed) to mount the image or do I need to have a separate Macrium USB for each one?
