Woody, I must join in on the many, many sentiments and well wishes expressed so eloquently already by all the posters above. As for myself, I consider myself very fortunate, indeed, in finding AskWoody.com.  It brought much-needed sanity to this Windows as a Service madness we have found ourselves having to endure; past, present, and for the foreseeable future. We all know that you leave us in the most capable hands with Susan leading this group of very knowledgeable and helpful folks, as well as we “beginners”. Good wishes and prayers to you and yours in your “retirement”. Enjoy! You’ve earned it.

My problem is that on one of my laptops, Windows keeps bugging, uh, begging me to install Chredge, but every time I try, I get the message that Chredge works best when my computer is fully updated, so do it and then come back to install it. The problem is I keep getting this message even when the laptop is fully updated. Catch 22.

WIN 10 1909 — I somehow forgot to turn off Windows Update after applying the August patches on one of my laptops. I use WUMGR to manually apply patches and updates. When I returned home from lunch yesterday afternoon, I discovered that the laptop had rebooted. In total shock and horror, I signed in and checked the version number. Sure enough, it had applied the September patches (it’s now OS build 18363.1082), but not Win 10 2004!!! (A big “thank you” to the Windows Updates for that!!) So far so good … but I’m keeping my fingers and toes crossed for a few more days!

Happy Birthday, AskWoody! It was a VERY good day the day I discovered this Website!! Looking forward to lurking around here for many more Patch Tuesdays and every day in between!

    • Same here with Edge and IE. Firefox got “Not Vulnerable.”

Gene Autry’s version of “Rudolph” is the one I remember most fondly. His recording of the song hit No. 1 on the Billboard pop singles chart the week of Christmas 1949 (I was six at the time). His recording sold 2.5 million copies the first year, eventually selling a total of 25 million, and it remained the second best-selling record of all time until the 1980s.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

    • in reply to: Know problems with Win10 version 1909 #2010377

Well, it’s awfully early yet, but I just cannot believe that, having a little time on my hands (and the boredom of the “impeachment” hearings all over TV), I actually decided to bite the bullet, say a prayer, and upgrade my two 1803 PCs to … drum roll, please … 1909! (I know, I know, but bear with me here, please) I’ve so far only found ONE small problem with the upgrades, that being that my wife and I have a few old WIN 7 casual games we love to play, so I used the Win7Games4Win10 program from Winaero to install our favorites on our WIN 10 PCs. That program didn’t “carry over” to 1909 with the upgrades. But it was a small matter to re-install them on both PCs, and now all is well again.

Now, let me say that I did not upgrade through Windows Update. I made an iso file with the Update Assistant and put it on a USB stick. I disconnected from the Internet to do the installations, re-connected and installed all the updates with WUMGR, as I always do with the monthly updates.

If any more problems crop up, I’ll post them here, but so far (fingers crossed), so good.

    • Running Win 10 1803 64 bit on a small business/home net.

Same here. I plan on upgrading to 1909 from an ISO file as soon as it is declared “good enough for business.”

    • “Q5: All of the same questions, but for Win10 version 1803.
Remember that 1803 hits end-of-support on Tuesday, but in the normal course of events you should be good for security patches until December’s Patch Tuesday. So how does the “Download and install now” offer fit into the 1803 scheme of things?”

I have 1803 on three computers. I updated Nov. 3 and got no security patches for Windows, including the Oct. Cumulative Update. All I was offered were the 2010 Office Patches and the usual non-Windows security patches for Oct. I installed what I was offered and then downloaded the Oct. Cumulative Update from the Catalog and installed it manually.

Sorry! I couldn’t get the block-quote function to work right. It kept block-quoting my entire comment.

    • “… highest customer satisfaction in the history of Windows.”

“… highest customer satisfaction in the history of Windows.”

“… highest customer satisfaction in the history of Windows.”

If you say almost anything loud enough and often enough, eventually many people will start believing it. Heck, you may even start believing it yourself.

I’ll spare everyone a rant here, but I feel compelled to repeat what I’ve said before in other places in the Lounge: As a long-time Windows enthusiast, both in my work and at home, I used to look forward to upgrades and was always one of the earliest adopters. From Windows 3.1 through Windows 7, computing was fun.

Then Windows 8 happened. As a TechNet subscriber and, for awhile at least, a Windows Insider, I tried it over and over with each new update, but always uninstalled it after much angst and frustration. The thing simply stank.

Finally, with 8.1, I discovered the joys of WindowBlinds and Start 8. All was good again. For awhile. Beginning with the upgrade to Windows 10, Anniversary Upgrade, two of my four computers were bricked. Had to do bare-metal reinstalls on both. The other two worked, sorta, but both had problems that took way too much time to troubleshoot and solve. Some problems never did get solved. On all four computers. I just made do with them. But that was only the beginning.

Thank goodness, I somehow discovered Woody Leonard’s AskWoody Website. I don’t even remember how. Probably during all those hours of researching the Web for answers to all my WIN 10 problems. If I hadn’t discovered this site, I’d no doubt be using Windows 8.1 with WindowBlinds and Start 8 today, and would be forced to learn the joys of Linux in a couple of years.

But, here I learned how to waste a couple or three hours each month making backups, disk images, and tame the WIN 10 update and upgrade monster to the point where I now update and upgrade when I want to, not when Microsoft says I have to. It’s amazing how all the previous breaks, bricks, and hoses were brought to heel on all of my computers, too.

Even so, spending so much time dealing with this WaaS madness has taken all the fun out of my computing experience. WaaS has made it drudgery, plain and simple. But, thanks to Woody and the many knowledgeable and helpful folks here at AskWoody, I’m coping, and for me, that’s good! 🙂

I’m sure that, once you find your way around the site, all of you Windows Secrets folks will come to appreciate AskWoody as much as I do. If so, please consider chipping in a few bucks from time to time. Let’s all help keep a good thing going!

    • in reply to: Welcome to Windows Secrets Lounge transplants #338154

Here’s another enthusiastic and sincere welcome to the many “transplants.” You’ll become “one of the family” in no time! Of course, there’ll probably be some “hiccups” ahead, but you’ll find all the help you need to make the transition right here … and you’ll love it! If not, just let us know. Of course, I’m speaking for the many, many more knowledgeable “gurus” you’ll find here than I, but we are indeed “family” here and I do pitch in when I think I have something to offer. We all hope you’ll do the same! Welcome again, and here’s hoping your transition is a smooth one.

    • in reply to: Where we stand with the February patches #335754

I’m confused about what’s safe to upgrade and what’s not, WildBill … but I’m thinking that until Woody lights up MS Defcon 3 or higher, I’m not upgrading anything. Of course, I’m always open, and grateful, for clarification from anyone here in the Lounge.

Yes, it looks like I’m good to go. Thanks for your help and the tip about Patreon. I’ll change my donation scheme as per your suggestion soon.

PKCano, will Patrons who currently contribute monthly to Ask Woody eventually be added to the Plus Membership roll? I’m not receiving the Newsletters and Alerts by e-mail yet, and I’m sure I signed up for them shortly after the changes were announced. I also see I don’t have the Plus flare on my avatar, either. Just wondering … Thanks.
