Your testing agrees with my experience on the File Explorer jump list. TA DA!! Add the desired folder to Quick Access! Just navigate to the folder of interest, don’t open it but right click it and choose ‘Pin to Quick Access’. No more sleepless nights!

Has anyone tried to just contact Windows 10 Support? It seems to me that they may be able to help, or perhaps they know it’s broken (in terms of changing drives for FH) and are working on a patch. I’m in the position that I have a very old (several years old) 500 gb external hard drive on which my FH reside. It still has about 150 gb free, which may tie me over for a while, but I still worry about failure of the current FH drive. I sure would like to move or rebuild FH on another external hard drive (not a network drive).

    • in reply to: Taskbar in Windows 10 freezes #1550528

Problem solved, at least for me. Again, I experienced start button ‘freeze’ and inability to do a search in the standard search window.
This was on my wife’s PC, not my own which is quite a bit more powerful. Anyway, Malwarebytes was running on the laptop and I noted that it was using up around 50% of the cpu when it ran. I uninstalled Malwarebytes, rebooted, and the problem disappeared. It has not occurred since. I’m not saying that Malwarebytes, per se, was the cause of the problem. Any app using up a lot of cpu is likely going to lead to the problem. I’d try to remove that sucker and see if the problem ceases.

KiwipeteW – at last someone has the same problem I’ve had – ‘frozen’ start button with left click, but right click works fine. The first time I experienced this, restart did the job – ‘unfrozen’ Start button. Now it has happened again (several days later) but restart does not fix it now, nor full shutdown with reboot. I considered the classic Restore this last time, but last restore point was weeks back and I did not want to risk losing a bunch of other changes (including a Microsoft update.) Hopefully you may run across some clue what is going on here. BTW, the Search does not work as well, but taskbar shortcuts to other programs work fine.

Thanks much! Why did I not think of using “Detect Problems”? Duh! It’s so logical and I’m a logical person (at least I thought I am.)

Maybe I’ve experience the same or similar problem. I don’t know what you mean by the taskbar freezing. Does it mean that you cannot start any program that shows on the taskbar or use the search window or start button? I have the problem that nothing happens when the start button is clicked (left click). This problem just cropped up a few days ago. In my case, the right click or the start button works normally. If anyone can answer your question, or mine if it is similar, we’d (I’d) would like to hear about how to fix it.

Thanks much for the tip; it solved my problem with including new folders by creating new library(libraries). I went back and to Fred’s Oct., 2014 article and followed the clearly explained the process. I just had to dig a bit deeper.

Loved your article. I just upgraded from Win 7 to 10. I skipped Win 8. One of the first things I did was to implement File History. My only problem is that it seems there is the option to Exclude folders, but I saw no way to Include additional folders. I may have missed something, but don’t know how to do it if it is possible in Win 10. If Including additional folders is not available in Win 10’s version of File History, this is a tragedy of sorts. What’s the scoop?

    • in reply to: IE 11 Surprise – Need Help #1518925

Go to Control PanelInternet Options. On the Programs tab check that IE is the default browser. If it is not then you should set it default then see what happens.

If you continue to have the same problem then you need to run Malwarebytes (MBAM), etc. scans to clean off any baddies: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Hooray!! The problem was the fact that IE was not set as the default browser! I don’t know how that happened – well, maybe I do after all. For whatever reason I had trouble ordering stuff from Amazon. I got so tired of this, I installed Chrome just to see if the browser made a difference. In that installation, I was asked if I wanted to make Chrome my default browser. I answered NO (NO, NO, NO)! Apparently the installer “insisted” despite my answer and I never noticed that. As an aside, I was able to use Chrome to get my order(s) thru Amazon – maybe Chrome took that to mean that, after all I did want it to take over as my default browser! Chrome sucks anyway (apologies to those liking Chrome), so I uninstalled it later on, but my default browser remained as Chrome. I’m a happy camper now – thanks a lot!!!!!

    • in reply to: Removing IE 11 to IE 10 on Win 7 PC #1497006

Wow, something worked!! I don’t have the foggiest what F11 is supposed to do – it shrunk the IE window bringing back the Task Bar! No more IE taking up every pixel of the screen. I was them able to expand the new IE window to maximum and it filled the screen with the Task Bar intact. I tried to get the RoboForm toolbar back up on the screen, but it would appear even though I unlocked the toolbar(s). Dejected, I started exploring the other suggestions and was not thrilled by the prospects of any of them as the end result might be re-creating the setup I had prior to the original problem. I needed to think on that so I closed IE and went off to get a Starbuck’s coffee. What do they put in that coffee?? When I returned and opened IE, everything was normal!!
Alleluia. I appreciate the help from the you and the other suggestions. There’s help to be had in this forum!

      BEST SOFTWARE

Taking another look at Microsoft’s Outlook.com

      By Katherine Murray

Hotmail’s replacement, Outlook.com, has slowly improved since its release in mid-2012.

Microsoft’s webmail viewer now provides a good selection of filtering tools for organizing your mail and protecting yourself from spam and other potentially dangerous mail.

To me using the feature to “winnow” out possible spammers/junk emailers by replying to their messages has a negative in that it tells the sender to “know” that your email address is a valid one (i.e. – keep me on your list of suckers!). Feature OK to ask safe senders for sending me the junk!

    • in reply to: Outlook Send/Receive Error Messages #1378475

Unfortunately I have the 32-bit version of Outlook 2010. I purchased the 2-license (1 PC) version from Microsoft Store and chose the download option (maybe it wasn’t available on disk). I can’t remember if 64-bit version of it was available at the time of the download. I think not as I almost certainly would have chosen the 64-bit. C’est la vie! Use of the 32-bit doesn’t seem to me to be a factor. I have had it for two years and it only started having the problem in the last few months. I’m wondering it the problem arose when one of the many MS updates of Outlook botched things up for me.

I did have the matching 32-bit Connector installed. Following your suggestion, I uninstalled that and reinstalled from Microsoft site (of course choosing the 32-bit version.) Unfortunately this did not solve the Send/Receive problem.

I’m not acquainted with Outlook’s sync folder. Where do I find it? Is this the same as clicking on the Send/Recieve error message on the lower right side of the screen. If so, I looked at details and it showed what I reported in my initial post.

I’d be happy to entertain other ideas you or others have.

I guess another option would be to uninstall Outlook and reinstall it. I had carefully save the initial Outlook installation file.

I have a Nokia Lumia 822 Win 8 phone. The apps list available from Nokia includes the Hotmail App. I’d be suprised if the Microsoft app store does not list the Hotmail app.

Concerning Acronis TIH 2013. I dual-boot Win 7 with Win8 Preview. I recently puchased Acornis Disk Director 2011 after the reduced price offer. I noted Acronis says its NOT compatible with Win8. Blithley I rationalized “should be no problem if I don’t use it with Win8” – WRONG!!. Once I tried to install on Win 7 partition, I could not boot my PC period! I tried Win 7 Recovery disk – it did not fix the problem. I rationalized that the MBR was screwed up. Fortunately I had a full backup using TIH 2013 and did a Restore using the combo of image recovery plus MBR recovery – whew – it worked. I can now boot either Win 7 or 8.

Admittedly, I have often tried things other questionable (in hindsight) operations on Win 7, and Acronis TIH has bailed me out.
