I had a similar experience with Microsoft Golf. App would not run without the CD in its drive despite all files being on the hdd.

Came to the conclusion that it was a way for Microsoft to ensure that multiple installations were not possible from the same CD — which makes sense from their viewpoint.

    • in reply to: External Hard Drive #624288

      Bruce:

Have just purchased and set up a 40GB Kanguru USB external HDD. It has worked without a hitch. Although it utilizes USB2 it’s backward compatible with USB1. Works with different interfaces … controlled by connecting cable applied.

Have also used Orb Removable 2.2 MB media drives for the last 4 years with no major problems. They function “like” a Jaz drive but both the media and the drives are considerably less expensive.

The Kangaru drives are marketed by Interactive Media Corp. Drive price at their web site was ~$160US; USB cable connector (others available) was ~$40US. Higher capacity externals are available.

      Steve:

      Bravo and bravissimo!!

That’s the best normalization outline I’ve encountered. You have the ability to take arcane concepts, simplify them, and make them understandable.

      Thanks again.

      Steve:

I wish someone had given me this handout when I started with Access … very helpful.

IMHO since you have them disabling the “Auto Name Correct stuff” you might consider having them check the “Compact on Close” option. This has not caused any problems — at least in my efforts — and helps to control “bloat”.

      Great job!

I’ve had good luck exporting reports to snapview (Access 2k) , then attaching the snp file to email.

    • in reply to: Front End / Back End – When to Use? (Any) #614055

      Brooke:

In addition to the above mentioned good reasons, perhaps one of the best is that if you have an app with more than one user entering data all users are accessing the same data tables in the back end. As stated above, the front end goes on the individual work stations and the back end is on a shared resource.

This avoids replication / append / synchronization problems (challenges?).

      Thanks for the responses.

Mark … you hit the problem on the head. I had used the ‘greater than’ sign to force caps display in the field.

      Thanks again,

    • in reply to: Help files gettin worse (Office XP) #609712

      Howard:

A DEC Rainbow was my first computer purchase. Remember the dual screen display? … and the “dual operating systems? (CPM and “sort of” MSDOS). Also I remember that to run Lotus 1-2-3 (release 1A – DEC version) — or any program for that matter — we needed the program disk in drive a: since there weren’t many of us who could afford the king’s ransom for a tiny “hard disk”.

I guess your comments explain why DEC’s application versions, even though “MSDOS” were different from the rest of the emerging computer world. Thanks for the insider’s look.

      Thanks for the response.

Peter’s response jogged my memory and solved the problem.

    • in reply to: Percent Rounding (2kProSR1a) #606657

      Peter:

You’re absolutely correct. I forgot about the “double” formatting, then kicked myself when you reminded me.

      Thanks again,

      Many thanks for the pointers.

This type of help is what makes me a major fan of the lounge … sort of like studying Philosophy at the feet of Plato.

    • in reply to: Norton System Doctor or equivalent #587402

I’ve used Norton Utilities, then System Doctor versions as they become available since the 80’s. They get installed to do their thing manually (not auto started at boot) except for the Antivirus checking agent.
Utilities like WinDoctor (Windows System Checker) and Speed Disk (Defrag) have kept my PC running well and efficiently. I also like Cleansweep (Program deleter and disk cleanup). Whenever I get an indication of a potential problem (like a crash, BSOD, or other hiccups) Windoctor gets run. It invariably finds several problems and fixes them. Then the PC is happy for another couple of months or so.
As you may have gathered, I’m a committed Norton Utilities and Systemworks fan.

    • in reply to: PRINT PREVIEW KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS (A2k) #587221

Thanks for that scroll bar suggestion. It works great!

My app needs 1024 screen resolution and I’ve gotten complaints about the “tiny triangles” also. Have gone so far as building navigation buttons in the footer to keep the complaints down, but your suggestion is elegant.
