AskWoody Loungerreceived this “important” update Kb931906 which has a publish date of 4/5/2012
Have you added some hardware ? Drivers ?
Alex5723 Wow! Thanks for the link!
When I had a new hard drive installed in 2017, I never reinstalled my webcam.
I just reinstalled it last week so I can have video chats with my children via Facebook messenger due to the “stay at home” recommendations.
It is an older Logitech Webcam C160.
I haven’t had any issues with it however.
So, do I apply the KB931906 or leave well enough alone?Edit to add:
I did install it with the original software that came with the webcam.-

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 30, 2020 at 9:25 am in reply to: MS-DEFCON 3: No rush, but you should get the January Patch Tuesday patches installed #2111966Reporting in regarding January Updates
Had an unusual occuranceHid all updates and did search (yesterday 1/29)
kb4536952 Servicing stack appeared and installed first
Unhid kb4534310 (rollup)
Rebooted waited about 1/2 hrWhen I went back to now install the rollup
Did a search for updates**
**NOTE: This was taking so long that I actually had to “end task” in task manager and rebooted my computer. It still was taking long so I ended it in task manager again and deceided to wait a few hours. Shut down my computer.
Tried again and the search for updates went smoothly and installed the roll up.
For the 1st time this automatically rebooted twice.unhid kb4535102 (.net Security and Quality Rollup) which took a long time to restore….
so I deceided to wait until this morning.
Once again search for updates was taking a long time, ended via task manager, rebooted and tried again. This time search for update worked.**
Installed the .net update and it installed fine.
Waited about an hour.
I unhid the MSRT update and that installed without issue.I have never had the need to end the task of “search for updates” because it was taking too long. This is the first time that has ever happened.
Trust me, I was a little worried there for a moment.

Did you check the box “Don’t remind me again” when the nag screen first popped up? If so, this should automatically set everything to never seeing the notification again, as if you had actually gone in and disabled the task in Task Scheduler.
Myst
Yes I did check the box!-

AskWoody LoungerI have a question about my hidden updates.
Before W7 end of support goes into effect, here are my “hidden” updates.
Should any of these be installed?
I know these 5 should probably be kept hidden
KB31493132 is the nag one
KB4503548 is the Net 4.8
KB2594819, KB25992687 are the RDP (remote desktop protocol)
KB2830477 (my notes tell me this was problematic so I hid it)
not sure about the rest of them however ?Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit Group A

AskWoody LoungerWow! Defcon 5
Who would have thought?
Windows update reporting in…..KB4530734 (rollup) installed smoothly. Rebooted only once per usual.
waited about 1/2 hour then installed
KB4531786 (service stack) it installed smoothly. I rebooted after
waited another 15 minutes then installed….
Kb4533095 (.net rollup) which also installed smoothly. I rebooted after.
Then….
I figure with Defcon at 5, might just as well go big or go home.
I installed the Dec. MSRT
I have not installed MSRT since last January.
All went smoothly.
The only thing I noticed was that after I installed the rollup, “checking for updates”
was taking a long time, so I “ended the task” via task manager and restarted “checking for updates”. No further problem.Dell Inspiron 660 (new hard drive installed and Windows 7 reloaded Nov. 2017)

AskWoody Loungerdgreen is an AV and will conflict with BD. That is likely the cause of your problem. How fast is your DSL line?
CanadianTech what did you mean “dgreen is an AV”???
Verizon is my DSL provider. I think the speed is on the lower side.
Several years ago I signed up for a lifetime price for DSL of $19.99/month.
I’m sure they have me on the “lower” end of the speed.
They try to have me upgrade but the cost would change.
I’m not in any rush when I go online so slow doesn’t bother me.
I use to have dial up, so DSL works for me.
BTW when I tried Windows 10 a couple years ago, it was very slow.
I was told that DSL is not good with Windows 10.
Thanks for all your responses, I appreciate them.-

AskWoody LoungerYour “log” is what’s under the “Events” tab.
PKCano So does that log look ok?
What about the email to verify my email address, is that ok to do?
If all looks good, I may do a system restore point, then I will
give the Nov. updates a go later today or tomorrow. -
dgreen
AskWoody LoungerI was just thinking, I have windows 7 64 bit. Did Bitdefender have a different download for that bit? I didn’t see any choice to download.
-
dgreen
AskWoody LoungerOk, to answer some of your questions,
Microfix I don’t know how to go about checking “log files” you mention.
Canadian CT I do not have any other AV installed. Only had MSE. I made sure Windows Defender was off. I did note that the install was 400+mb.
I’m DSL, maybe that’s why it took so long?
PKCano My Thunderbird is up to date.
Still don’t know about reseting my system restore???? I checked and I still have recent restore points except I noticed there was no restore point for Bitdefender.
Thunderbird and askwoody did not give me a warning this time.
Here is a snip it of BitDefender events and the the last 2 is the email I got saying I had to verify my email address. Is this a scam email or legit? -
dgreen
AskWoody LoungerI finally installed Bitdefender (free version) with d/l the online installer exe, go offline, uninstall MSE, go back online and ran the installer.
First, It took 1 hr. for it to install. Is this normal?
Second, I did sign up for an account. It sent me an email for verification but I got this warning (I have thunderbird as email client for gmail). I also got the warning to access this site! Is this safe?
One of the warnings I’m assuming was my shortcut for MSE that was still present.
However, what is with the notice that my system restore was reset?????-

AskWoody LoungerAbout 3/4 my clients fit that description. The solution that has worked for them and me is a “final state” Windows 7 system that has a relatively new hard drive and a re-installed OS that is “updated” up to and including May 2017. WU is disabled. Chrome is in use. Adobe Flash and Reader, as well as Java are removed. BitDefender Antivirus + is installed.
These systems simply run and run and run. Never a problem.
I have a detailed procedure to do this and would happily share it with all and sundry.
Not one of the 120 systems I look after has had a single problem in 30 months now.
Canadian Tech
I thought your instructions were already posted here somewhere?
2 years ago (Nov. 2017) when my hard drive bit the dust and I replaced it, I had Staples
do a fresh reinstall of Windows 7. I didn’t have a disk (Dell didn’t supply them) but had a “service tag #” that they used. I did have the original disk drivers though and they told me that was a good thing to have to reinstall.
A week later I saw your post regarding stopping all updates. It was too late for me as I had already installed my AV and updated (Group A). If I remember, your instructions were do a system image before installing anything, including AV.
In retrospect, I realize now that maybe I could have done a “system restore” at that time and probably could have done your system.my suggestion for Woody’s uncle name…..
