    • From @abbodi86 post above

“so, to answer the topic question, the amount of sent data with KB4507456 telemetry components is not different from the rollup or the standalone superseded KB2952664”

And, those in Group B avoided KB2952664 at the time (and since).

Maybe, Susan Bradley’s original question could be turned on its head. Is there anything in KB4507456 other than the telemetry that is of security value for GroupB?

    • Yes, positive it is End of Support Notification (EOSNotify). It has 3 triggers and is set to run EOSNotify.exe in /System32 folder. It was at status Ready.

    • Win7 Pro; Group W.

Just checked the Task Scheduler and refreshgwxconfig-B is not there.

However, I did discover EOSNotify (End of Support Notification) under Setup and at status Ready. It’s now disabled 🙂

      KB4493132 has not been installed.

would not updating to WinRAR v5.70 also sort the issue out?

That is also what I understood. Can anyone confirm if version 5.70 solves the problem?

So be thinking now, be planning now to prevent your own “windows 7 rot”.  What are you planning to do?

Like many others above, I’m not going to W10. It’s just not for me. But I don’t want to abandon the decades of effort that went into setting up my Win7 Pro. Currently trying Ubuntu 18.04. Getting on ok so far but need to decide whether to dual boot, or try to run my Win 7 setup in a VM. Either way, I probably won’t run Win 7 online, just use it for the programmes that are not replaceable in Linux.

Just wondering if we can start a thread for those planning on using Linux and Win7…

I’m Group B and note that there is a Security Only Update for Jan 2018 (KB4056897) which also requires the registry key. This update is dated Jan 3.

Norton (Symantec) anti virus has automatically updated for me – the required registry key is present and eraser64.sys has been updated to version 117.3.0.358 (dated Jan 4).

As we are still at Defcon 2, how long to wait before installing?

    • The detection tool you reference is for the Intel Management Engine vulnerability, not for Meltdown and Specter vulns. There is not detection tool yet for either of the new vulnerabilities.

      Ooops, Sorry.

    • Thanks to everyone for all the bits of info. Here are a couple more fragments:

Anti-virus is also involved (not sure the technical details but it involves a registry entry). I use Norton Internet Security and it has updated eraser64.sys to the required version with today’s date. Apparently, that is sufficient to apply the Win7 x64 patch (as soon as Woody give the go-ahead).

      Different problem:

There is an Intel tool for checking if your processor is vulnerable to the Intel Management Engine vulnerability- https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/27150?v=t

My 9 year old Dell with Intel i7 comes up vulnerable. D**n!

    • in reply to: Office Questions #130912

This may not be the correct place for this (please move it if necessary).

I have used MS Office from the very beginning, first in a big company and later in my own company. Mostly it was Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. I use Outlook as my email client and have kept all relevant emails in-house and carefully backed up. I have two bought copies of Office 2007 (one for laptop, one for desktop) and could find no compelling reason to purchase updates to Office 2010, 2013 or 2016. Office 2007 is more than adequate for my needs for the foreseeable future (i.e. forever).

However, Office 2007 comes to the end of its supported life later this year. Is there any compelling reason to stop using it thereafter?
