For me the October updates went without a noticeable hitch. If Mary Jo Foley is correct, her sources say we may not see a Spring 2021 upgrade and instead won’t see another until next Fall. Microsoft intends to focus on Windows X for Spring whatever  that means? I’d be happy with the minimal 20h2 and a nice pause for feature upgrades.

Was also wondering if this issue was related to the potential of customers contacting Microsoft about their cloud service problems? Probably goes a bit deeper than what Microsoft admits too. It does seem nobody wants to admit that cloud services has its share of drawbacks. Because it is so centralized and interconnected when it goes down, it really can go down.

    • in reply to: Patch Lady – what would you change about Windows 10? #2300910

Yeah I would like a LTS version available to everyone. I use Windows for running software, I could care less about feature upgrades or some change in UI or revamping Control Panel for the sake of change. Just want a stable version of Windows.

Good advice! More users need to learn how to back out of a bad site or anything really by using Task Manager or even forcing a shut down. When you become click happy you can become very unhappy.

I don’t think she did but others have posted that they have done it successfully. I would have thought that was the case as they took the code base from Classic Shell and produced Open Shell from that.

I’m happy that over installing it keeps existing settings…I sure don’t want to have to do that all over again!

    • in reply to: Windows Defender – yes or no? #2297836

Yep, I have 2 of those lifetime subscriptions too. When I bought the laptop, I used the free one for several years but then when I retired I started doing some consulting with companies working (or trying to) with the agency that I worked for at the time I retired. At that time I opted to take a 2 year subscription ($69.95 in May 2019) for the laptop.

I have emails from MWB going back to 2011 but think I subscribed before that. They stopped lifetime licenses in 2014.

I have had several occasions to contact MWB over false hits. They are quick to respond. Excellent software.

    • The expectation is that when you design a devices and are responsible for the OS that it runs and even some core apps. That you would be similar to Apple where you can provide a premium device experience because you control so much.

Yep, started on Bull/GE Gamma30 machines but after that on Honeywell mainframes and IBM 360/30 & 360/50. Then, started writing CICS programs under CICS (in fact Restart/Recovery before CICS even had it) at Allied Breweries in Burton Upon Stench (so called for the 2 breweries brewing 6 days per week between them, a pork pie factory, a yeast factory (the worst smell) and Marston’s brewery burning old tires during the winter power cuts). Those were the days <g>.

Retired handling communications software under CICS for custom communications over TCP/IP and MQ Series running under IBM Z mainframes.

I gave up on Norton many years ago (just got too big and cumbersome). I never used McAfee at home.

I am PCcentric predominantly. BUT, I do use a Samsung smart phone. The best feature I can think of is the ability to hold and remind me of appointments. I sync the phone back to the PC (via the GMail calendar) using Outlook 2013 on the PC with the GSyncit outlook addon to do the synching. GSyncit is a very nice Outlok addon BTW).

It’s a nice feature to be able to look at my phone in, say, a doctors office and confirm that I can make an appointment in 3 or 6 months. Sure beats going home to a physical calendar to find out that I have a conflict on that just-made appointment and having to call the doctor’s office back and change it.

    • in reply to: Kicking the Win10 2004 tires #2297786

I had two PC’s that never was offered the upgrade through Windows update. One had a block for awhile which was indicating in Windows update and then that went away but never offered a upgrade. My home built desktop never was offered it either but had no blocks on it. I never felt I was missing anything anyway so didn’t really care. One day I got around to running the Windows upgrade tool you download and it installed the upgrade without issues. Probably just another glitch of many and here we are almost to Fall upgrade so does it matter?

I’m an oldie also (70). Started my IT career on mainframes as an operator for 3 years and spent the following 45 years as a software engineer also finishing my career on mainframes (using any platform from embedded micros to micros to mini to PC computers between the mainframe stints).

I use subscription MWB and it runs a daily scan and also Defender.

Malwarebytes carries a very small overhead nowadays (in their subscription version at least) and does a pretty fast scan. I let it scan daily and also use Defender.

I use Malwarebytes subscription and Defender now.

I got so tired of the nag screens from Panda and other “free” AV software versions that I gave up on them.

    • in reply to: Win10 version 2004 systemwide password “amnesia” #2297771

I updated 3 PCs to V2004 over the last few days.

2 were OK, my wife’s desktop after first logging post update with a password seemed to want a PIN# when coming out of sleep mode. I showed how to go to “SignIn Options” and switch back to a password.

I have used Classic Shell for quite a few years now (so much for old dogs learning new tricks….I like the “older” interface).

I like the idea that you can install Open Shell over Classic Shell and retain settings

Has anyone actually done that and have any experiences or oddities to share?
