AskWoody PlusThank you Susan, her passing is a great loss to the UK.
Whether one agrees with Monarchy or not, no one can deny the work and sheer dedication with which she carried her duty

AskWoody PlusI use Terabyte IFW which I’ve used for many years. I take a drive image each weekend which I keep on a separate SSD online for quick access, plus I keep an offline copy as well on USB HDD’s

AskWoody PlusHave a great retirement Woody. Thank you so much for all you’ve done over the years.
Keep safe and have fun

AskWoody PlusPretty much the same here.
I kicked around getting one once or twice but I can’t see what use it would fulfill, and buying something to try to induce an addiction to it for things I don’t need in the first place seems to be an act of futility
I do have an old Nokia cellphone which can make calls for emergencies which works fine for me

AskWoody PlusI take the same approach here, better safe than sorry.
Weekly backups (kept offline) and keeping browsers locked down with NoScript and UBlock Origin covers a large part of the rest of potential issues.

AskWoody PlusMany thanks Woody, we’re just starting to see a few cases in the UK now, so we’re geared up for it.
As mentioned by others, our colleagues in other areas of the Public Sector also deserve praise for all the good work they do often under very difficult circumstances with all the budget cuts we’ve had over here

There will of course be much wailing, wringing of hands and gnashing of teeth then everything will carry on the same, as users will simply put up with it and comply.

AskWoody PlusJanuary 16, 2020 at 9:09 am in reply to: Windows 7 end of support: Separating the bull from the horns #2085766I’ve been running MBAM 4 for a while now and not had any issues (Win7 64bit)
MBAM v3 was a dog so I stayed on v2 as there were so many problems, but I was very pleasantly surprised when I tried v4, no problems at all so far
Edit: I’m on the paid version btw

AskWoody PlusDecember 13, 2019 at 5:11 am in reply to: Foley: This is how Microsoft’s Azure organization makes Windows #2018962I very much agree.
The term “Intelligent” or the more common “Smart” is just marketing hype for what is a basically a series of IF… THEN…. Statements. It has no self-awareness, understanding or contextual knowledge so when it gets things wrong it just carries on doing things wrong. Anyone having dealt with an automated call centre will know the frustration when it does something completely different to what you’ve told it to do and refuses to change course.
I also dislike the anthropomorphism, it’s a piece of code nothing more, not a “he” or a “she”. It has its uses but it is definitely not intelligent or smart. Some clever coding perhaps – when it works.
On the question of carbon footprint, I doubt anyone cares while they’re making a profit. Anything for a fast buck, let someone else deal with the consequences.

AskWoody PlusThis takes me back.
I was a Fidonet NC for a few years in the UK and from memory I think the record for getting a message from UK to Australia was around 24 hours (the mail connection timings had to be just right). Message times in UK and Europe weren’t too bad though.
Fun days indeed, it was a bit clunky but it did work surprisingly well.

AskWoody PlusI gather it may be the same for Cortana as well from what I’ve read about this today.
