Exorcising OneDrive is like trying to slay the Hydra!

I cannot get it to go away from my Windoze computer or to go away from my Android fone.

So I filled it with lockscreen images, yet it still wants me to backup to you know where!

Thanks you for that article! It brought back some old old memories.
I cut my computer teeth on a build-it-yourself Altair 8800 back in the ’70s. Programming was performed by setting the switches and then the load switch for each machine language instruction. Even a simple program took a while. The results were displayed on the front panel LEDs in binary. After struggling for months, I finally finished a routine to get it to load and save programs on a portable cassette recorder. Then I installed a ROM with CP-M – what a time saver! I could now use a keyboard, but I still used the cassette recorder. After building the interface, I eventually got a floppy disk to work. That was so much more reliable than the cassette recorder. The very first IBM PC I ever saw wasn’t until the early 80s at Lockheed, where I was working at the time. Most of the computers there were NorthStar CP-M machines, but our supervisor decided he wanted an IBM machine instead. One of my coworkers showed me his brand-new Apple with the first graphical interface I’d ever seen. See the “Mother of All Demos, presented by Douglas Engelbart (1968)” on Youtube. It’s been a wild ride since then!

      Phew!

      I’m unsubscribing from this topic/thread.

My inbox has become over-stuffed with all the excellent posts!

Meanwhile, I’ll keep using DropBox because it works the way I want it to – sharing files between my computers/devices in a way that I can easily control while not getting blind-sided by some arbitrary change that I don’t want, never asked for and will probably never use just because some geek in Redmond or India or who knows where thinks I need it. When and if Micro$lop can ever get OneDrive to be consistent and behave in a civilized, predictable, and repeatable manner with just one unified version maybe I’ll try it again – maybe.

As for OneNote, I have a solution that I like better – using a text editor and putting my notes, screenshots, etc., in their own Forget-Me-Not folder on DropBox.

      I’ve grown to hate 0neDrive!
I’ve endeavored to remove all traces of it from my computers, even though that seems to be a losing battle. Why on earth does it want to save all my 42TB to my “cl0ud”?
I much prefer DropBox even though I have to pay for it.

0neNote isn’t much better. It keeps nagging me to restore a long ago abandoned notebook, that it cannot find when I tell it to restore it. It was stored somewhere in 0neDrive – but now who knows where?
I had hoped that it might resemble the old Lotus notebook, but no, that was too usable.

I’m currently evaluating several Expl0rer replacements, because they won’t be married to 0neDrive.

All the Micro$oft stuff seems to be trying to HiJack our stuff. I suspect, but cannot offer any proof, that they are scraping user data for their own nefarious purposes.

    • Slight change of subject.

I want to leave the Windows system stuff on my SSD which is currently C, and have all the users’ stuff on an HDD which is currently D.  I’ve thought about just pinning a bunch of shortcuts, but Windows will still want to use C instead of D by default. I recently installed Office 2021 but there was no way that I could find to put it anywhere except the C drive.

Is there a best way to get Windows to live on its C drive but use drive D for programs and users’ stuff by default?

    • in reply to: No Internet after Cold Boot #2645287

      I’ve already tried that.

Clicking the Internet icon starts the troubleshooter, and that comes up empty-handed – no network adapters found – as usual. It does the same thing as ipconfig /renew.

    • in reply to: No Internet after Cold Boot #2642665

I had turned off fast boot because when I turn off the machine I don’t want it remembering anything when I restart it. I want a clean slate.

IPCONFIG /RENEW says there is nothing to do – no network adapter connected.

So I disabled the onboard NIC and tried a USB Gigabit adapter and all was well – for a while. After several weeks, it would randomly disconnect, and IPCONFIG would not help like before. Clicking on the Globe Icon did not offer any solution other than the Network Troubleshooter which has never solved anything for me and still lives down to its reputation. So I plugged in another USB 10B100 adapter and it worked – until it didn’t.

There are some other mysterious happenings with this machine (Dell 9010 I7-3700, 32G Ram). Occasionally I watch the display go dark for a few seconds then come right back. And occasionally my backlit keyboard goes dark for a few seconds then lights bask up again.

I have also tried to disable any power management for USB stuff and the USB NICs in particular so they should be always on.

      Can a computer harbor ghosts?

I started my computer. I didn’t start Edge.

Why does Edge have so many instances loaded?

      What is it doing?

      Is it spying?

    • in reply to: Windows 10 keeps trashing my fax modem! #2614316

I’m going to try an old school Zoom external RS-232 56K data-voice-fax modem on my computers unused serial port, just for s#its and giggles. I’ll keep you all posted.

    • in reply to: Windows 10 keeps trashing my fax modem! #2604274

I’ve tried other USB ports. I’ve used MMC to delete the device and its drivers, then reinstalled it. I works until Windoze does an update.

      Thanyk you for your reply!

I bought the Conexant USB Voice Fax modem from GetFaxing (ever hear of them?) and I was able to get it working. At least until Windoze trashed it again. Since I also want to use it with CallClerk to handle phone messages, I really want the voice part to work also. Apparently Redmond does not.

    • in reply to: How to use the Microsoft Edge sidebar #2596870

I’ve thought about trying some of the ‘features’ in Edge/CrEdge and it seems to work OK, BUT even if I never even opened it I’ll have multiple instances of it, 11 in this case, showing up in TaskManager. Why? What the heck is it doing? Why does it even have to be loaded?

    • in reply to: New fonts and templates, but with traps #2585218

Just for fun I searched my computer for .TTF files. The result was 1474 .TTF files on my computer. If I have ever used 10 of those that would probably be a lot.
Why are there so many font files when most of them look identical to some other font?
Is there a font war going on?
How can I fight font pollution?

    • At this point I can’t answer your questions. I have long since recycled the laptop and I do not recall if it was an AMD or Intel chipset. After a few tries installing and reinstalling Linux, I gave up and decided that it just wasn’t going to work on that old machine. I think it was originally “Designed for Windoze 95”.

      Sorry,

      Dave

I now also use the Leawo Blu-ray Player on my Win10 22H2 which works so good for playing Blu-ray discs that I purchased a license for it!
