February 12, 2018 at 3:15 pm in reply to: MS-DEFCON 2 for Feb 2018: Make sure Automatic Update is turned off #166901

I’m no security expert, but in all fairness to them, my experience with my small break and fix shop is that I found the majority of my clients couldn’t grasp the concept of delaying updates for a couple weeks or more. I’ve spent hours explaining how and why, but it just doesn’t click in my average users – young and old.

Just last week I remoted into a client (for another issue) that we had setup to check for updates and notify over a year ago and not 1 update has been applied.

When I asked her why she hadn’t updated she stated she was afraid to. She might be forced into Windows 10 again, she didn’t know when was a good time, it was never convenient.

Found the same thing years ago with XP. At that time I put everyone on automatic until the Win10 fiasco. Now I’m back to setting them up for automatic with the deferral dates set in Win10.

I updated MBAM on about 40 machines yesterday and although it appeared to solve the issue we left it disabled for the time being. Glad I did now!

January 27, 2018 at 9:57 pm in reply to: Malwarebytes BIG problem #162725

This has killed my whole day. 1st client called about 8am and from his description I thought HDD or memory. Logged in and immediately killed MBAM before running HDD diagnostics. System worked OK and everything came up clean. Rebooted and saw MBAM chewing memory. Disabled it and the system worked fine.

Then the phone started ringing off the hook. One machine I was able to get into was using 30GB of memory for MBAM service.

Sometimes I just hate my job!

We installed the 2.2.1 BIOS, the IME component update (all before the notice of Meltdown and Spectre was made public) and the MS January Security update. All machines state protected with GRC InSpectre tool.

Not sure. On all of our XPS 8900 machines it shows not vulnerable to Meltdown & Spectre and performance “Slower”, although none of our users have noticed any slowdowns.

Just thought of something. The XPS 8900 came with legacy BIOS enabled. We wiped the machines initially and installed Win7 in UEFI mode. That may be the difference??

2.2.1 was pulled. It originally came out as the IME bios update but included the spectre “fix”. We haven’t noticed any issues on numerour XPS 8900s that have been updated. Sit tight if you aren’t experiencing issues.I’m guessing there will be another update coming.

Advising my clients to sit tight for a while but if they need a machine now to go with Skylake or above or AMD.

About all you can do at this point.
