I had a client’s machine once that was done by GS. They had copied her backup files to the root of C: (can’t remember for sure but it was a folder named GS or something) and then copied them from there to her documents, pictures etc. folders, without deleting the originals, thereby doubling her data usage with duplicates on the same drive. Might be something to look for.

    • in reply to: When do we think 1809 will really be safe to install? #320046

On fresh installs over the last month we’ve noticed no issues with 1809. A couple weeks ago we started updating clients from 1803 and 1709 to 1809. So far no issues noted.

Most of what we do is through RDP and asst remote access apps. I can say the machines feel much snappier to me through RDP after the upgrade. Haven’t run any benchmarks but so far I’m liking it and will be upgrading my remaining machines.

On my workstation (fresh install) 1809 fixed a few goofy quirks I had with 1803.

    • Has anyone tested if KB4487345 also resolves the RDP issues caused by KB4480970, on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, for local admin users ? I have seen a few people speculating that it does, but nothing confirmed. The workaround for the reg hack on ‘LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy’ seems somewhat unsatisfactory and we would rather not have to create additional standard users just for RDP access. Thanks.

Had a client call this morning in a panic as he couldn’t RDP into his win 7 machine after installing KB4480970. Didn’t have time to play with it so I just uninstalled KB4480970 and put him back in service. May get some time to play with it this weekend.

Had some time to play with this today and found I could install KB4487345 prior to KB4480970 and didn’t lose RDP or have to go through creating a standard user or using another remote app to access the machines.

    • Got it on 3 of 6 test machines after clicking check for updates. All machines set up pretty much the same. All checked within about a 2 hour time frame this evening.

Windows updating has really gone off the rails stupid.

    • I found I couldn’t uninstall KB4480970, got a “corrupted component” error. Reinstalled from nightly image. How did you uninstall?

Standard way through Control Panel > Windows Updates > Uninstall. Took a little while but worked fine and then showed back up after searching for updates.

    • in reply to: Tranisition from win7 to win10 #312046

I’ve done about 30 upgrades over the last 2 weeks on a variety of systems. Only problem was with a laptop with Office 2013. Running a repair on office solved it but had to reactivate afterwards.

Started by creating a drive image. Then uninstalled anything they didn’t use (programs, Java etc.) Did a deep cleanup, defrag and system file check and chkdsk. When everything was clean and ready to go, used 7-zip to extract the Win10 iso to a folder. At this point I would disconnect from the internet when possible (I did many from a remote connection) and run setup.

After the upgrade completed I uninstalled all the foolish stuff like candy crush, mobile plans etc. I then used O&O Shutup https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10 and imported my config file I created and rebooted a few times.

Went through settings and got everything like I wanted, connected to the internet, updated windows with my update settings configured. Updated the store apps we kept and just let the machine sit for a few hours.

Then cleaned up, defragged and put them back in service.

I didn’t use any of the start menu replacements I just tweaked the menu to make it usable. Haven’t had any issues or complaints and a few stated they actually liked 10 better and felt their machine was faster.

    • I upgraded about 15 machines from 7 to 10 (1803) last week. Two of them run 10 on new laptops so they were ready for their desktops to be close to the same. The others were younger employees of companies I maintain. Figured I’d get them used to it so they can help the older employees cope when the time comes 🙂

Have to say the upgrades went surprisingly well even doing them from a remote connection. Only bug noticed so far was duplicate user folders on a system with redirected folders but was easy enough to deal with.

Fresh installed and upgraded some of our machines around here to 1803 a few weeks back. Not because I like it, but working full time in a system reveals more than the limited time I get to play with VMs.

    • Just checked one of our machines set to check updates but not install. KB4462923 was listed as important update and ready to install. After hitting check for updates it was removed and KB3177467 was the only update available.

Edit to add – When checking installed updates, KB3177467 was already installed on 08/23

    • Had a client call with this issue day before yesterday. I ran quickbooks as admin and since then he hasn’t had any issues launching it. Think I’ll wait a bit before installing this update 🙂

    • in reply to: Reboot to motherboard level only… #204297

Have a remote client that has this issue the last 6-8 months. Has a Dell Vostro Win7 64-bit with an HP USB printer and Seagate backup drive. Issue started occurring shortly after he added a 3rd monitor. I haven’t been to his site to evaluate but if what he states is correct, his boot order in BIOS is set properly.

My workaround has been to disable the printer and backup drive in device manager, reboot and then re-enable the devices. Bit of a pain and adds a little time to my maintenance every week but at least it works.

    • Why did I upgrade? Because it’s like eating ghost peppers. An exhilarating experience, I’ll either die or flush my tear ducts 🙂

I upgraded my kids and grand-kids machines so they can report any issues before my clients start calling. So far on a few older Dells no issues reported… yet!
