AskWoody PlusWhat a trip this was! So many memories.
While I was a die-hard Trash-80 fan (too poor for an IBM), my brother just about worshipped IBM, continually said their OS was the best by far and just raged at their mishandling (in his view) of the business that let MS take over as popular choice for a while with Apple later catching up.
Thank you for the great memories and the smiles.

AskWoody PlusADW did apparently wipe out Defender. At this point I don’t much care since so much else is working again and I do have Kaspersky.
Thanks again for your patient help and explanations.

AskWoody PlusBob99, TechTango:
Brilliant. I ran all as requested, ADW discovered an Amazon PUP, and boy, was it messing with my machine!
I haven’t seen any more over-the-top photos, but they didn’t come often, though I’m sure they’ll be gone based on all the other annoying glitches that cleared up when that was quarantined.
I had several problems with FB and Messenger not operating properly. My conduit of Library site-ADE -Kobo was totally trashed and I had been working on that with all of Adobe, Overdrive and Rakuten with no success at all. All that is cleared up now.
Thank you, thank you for sticking with me. I’m pretty happy about the outcome of following all your instructions.

AskWoody PlusSorry again (I’m beginning to sound too Canadian, eh?)
I meant on this page.

AskWoody PlusSorry – I meant ADWCleaner.
Same question – which actions do I click on?

AskWoody PlusBob99, TechTango,
OK, I’ve downloaded MalwareBytes.
Under the ‘Actions to perform’ which should I activate? I’ve forgotten what most of them do.
Thanks.

AskWoody PlusI’m running Kaspersky now. It used to be rated VG, but haven’t checked lately. Only have Malware Bytes on a machine that’s out of service.
I’ll download it again, and also run Kaspersky and Defender and see what happens. I hadn’t run anything yet because I wanted to have some idea of what I might be looking for. My computer expertise slowed down considerably with the arrival of grandchildren, and disappeared entirely with the further arrival of the great-grands. And I never fault someone for taking me all the way through a process, except for telephone support that doesn’t listen to what you say you’ve already done.
The stuff came both times under the same poster – Ernst Gumede. The Gumedes are the family that owns South Africa’s largest IT firm. Don’t know if there is any relation, but could be where the expertise comes from.
I’m usually so careful about collecting ‘junk’ that this severely annoys me. Thanks so much for all the info.

AskWoody PlusI’ll try that.

AskWoody PlusThat’s good to know. Which distro do you run?

AskWoody PlusI tried moving to Linux back in the ’90s, because I was already fed up, but I found the Linux cabal so unfriendly and actually hostile to newcomers that I had to go back to Windows since no help was available for someone starting at my level.
And I tried several versions of Linux then – can’t even remember what my favourite was.
But you sound as if you can figure things out on your own, so you should have fun with it."She was not quite what you would call refined. She was not quite what you would call unrefined.

AskWoody PlusThanks for that!Who would give that? The bank or the cell company.I’m also going to look into those “everywhere SIMS” if I can only remember their right name."She was not quite what you would call refined. She was not quite what you would call unrefined.

AskWoody PlusThe thing I hate about 2-factor authentication is that I rarely have my phone or usual phone number when it’s needed.
I’m of an age that hasn’t gotten used to carrying a phone around all the time, so most of the time it’s somewhere other than where I am, especially when I’m working on things. It would be a distraction.
And when I’m travelling, due to the extortionate charges for cell service in Canada and which are even seriously worse for roaming, I just get a local SIM card.
Either way, when some site surprises me with the need for authentication I have to rush to retrieve my phone, or else switch out SIM cards and ask them to send again, which can lead to me being cut off from my bank due to an overabundance of caution.
I have not figured out a good way around either of these problems, so, frankly, I wish 2 factor authentication was a choice, rather than a necessity.
Any hints for work-arounds welcome.
TIA,~cybercrone
