AskWoody PlusSeptember 2, 2017 at 9:02 am in reply to: Win10 users — it’s time to move to Creators Update, version 1703 #131846Click on the link “Download Windows 10 site” in the post above, Click on “Update now”
The link goes to
“Create Windows 10 installation media”
You have a license to install Windows 10 and are upgrading this PC from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.You need to reinstall Windows 10 on a PC you’ve already successfully activated Windows 10.
I already have Windows 10 version 1607. I want to go to version 1703 as Woody recommends. The link seems to be to get Windows 10. Isn’t there a method to upgrade to version 1703 from within version 1607?
Thank you.

AskWoody PlusSeptember 1, 2017 at 7:25 pm in reply to: Win10 users — it’s time to move to Creators Update, version 1703 #131791I don’t see how to remove the html as I got it from Woody’s post.
Is there a post on how to go to version 1703 from version 1607? My updates don’t look for or see version 1703.
Thanks.

AskWoody PlusSeptember 1, 2017 at 2:02 pm in reply to: Win10 users — it’s time to move to Creators Update, version 1703 #131705If you have the upgrade to 1703 blocked — I discussed several ways of doing so in April — you should go in and remove the blocks. Wait until you have a few days to spare (guess how I’m spending my weekend), then check update (Start > Settings > Update & security, Check for updates) and reboot a couple of times. It may take a day for your machine to get noticed, but chances are pretty good you’ll get upgraded through Windows Update.
Woody, I have versioni 1607 and have done monthly updates using your methodology with Wushowhide. However, I have never been offered update to version 1703. How does one do that upgrade

AskWoody PlusWoody, as always an excellent summary article from you. I use Version 1607. I realize that you are not responsible for Computer World’s html, but I found your article impossible to copy/paste text from.
Slide2: I disabled Cortana for security reasons, using AskWoody techniques. As a result, I don’t have a Search Box. Classic Shell does not restore search box. There is an app called “Search” but does not work.
Slide 4: I don’t have Task View app but can get it by Ctrl-Alt-Del.

Do you have a link for that article?

AskWoody PlusEd Bott’s instructions are tempting but unfortunately very complicated, e.g., what is “Media Creation Tool” and how does one download it and what is an ISO file>
“If you’ve downloaded the Media Creation Tool on the machine you plan to upgrade, and you plan to upgrade one and only one PC, you can choose the Upgrade this PC now and be done with it. If you’re running the tool on a different PC, or if you just want more flexibility, choose the second option and save the installation files to a USB drive or as an ISO file. After the download is complete, double-click the ISO file to mount it and open a File Explorer window; or, if you chose the option to create a bootable drive, open the USB flash drive in File Explorer and run Setup from there. Then just follow the prompts to complete the upgrade. You will not be asked for a product key, and when the upgrade is complete, you’ll have a digital license to Windows 10, which you can confirm by going to Settings > Update & security > Activation. The digital license is tied to that device, which means you can reformat the disk and perform a clean installation of the same edition of Windows 10 anytime. You won’t need a product key, and activation is automatic.”

AskWoody Plus“listing patches that should be removed”–what does that refer to?

AskWoody PlusWoody, the first seems simplest but how will you expect us to implement it? “A short list of KB numbers, listing patches that should be removed. @PKCano has an example in the AKB 200003 documentation”?
Are we supposed to do the monthly Security-only updates or monthly rollup patches (as you recommend) and then afterwards remove the KB #s that you list?
My experience with removing patches has been worrisome, e.g. could not get into Win7 GUI and had to restore Windows.

AskWoody PlusThis may be related to 3/17 IE Security patch if that was included in the bundled Windows 10 update. But after my “successful” Windows 10 patch when it went t MS-Defcon3, I find that Windows 10 does not fully shut down. I have to hold down the start button on the system to fully shut it down.
