    • Woody, I see that you have just gone to “3” on Defcon. Which month’s updates are these that you say we should do? We already did the 10/2017 updates at the end of last month. When I check Windows updates today, nothing new comes up.

“you have read recent comments and run Disk Cleanup with the box for Windows Cleanup checked, possibly for the first time ever. That function will create that activity on the NEXT shutdown/start cycle while it cleans out what can become a very large amount of unneeded data. This does not explain the disabled services or empty history.”

Thanks for the detailed analysis. I believe that your correct guess hits the nail on the head. I was not aware that a Windows Cleanup can instigate what appears to be a normal Windows update cycle. That would also explain how that happened with the “Windows Update” service disabled and shut down.

On shut down, My Win 7 system  began a Windows update and completed (after 1 hard reset) on reboot. But I had two Windows services disabled: “Background Intelligent Transfer” & “Windows Update”. I don’t know how the update could have occurred.

After the update, I had Build # 7601. When I checked Update History, there was no history at all. Was this some kind of bogus malware update and should I try to restore to the last good Windows update?

BTW, your idea that one must use the password of the system where the share folder is enabled me to figure out how to re-enable shares on my lan after update of  Win 10 to version 1703.

My guess is that the 8/17 Win 7 rollup update included a driver update.

On one of my 4 Windows 7 machines, after the update, I get this error message:

“Reboot & select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device & press a key.”

Greatly appreciated. BTW, I am grateful that the upgrade to version 1703 worked at all. I usually expect the worst from Windows, Your and Woody’s detailed ideas allowed the update to work.

I will try your network shares idea. I’ve found that one has to try many different fixes with Windows network shares to eventually get one to work.

I was able to update from Win 10 version 1607 to versioin 1703 thanks to excellent help from PK Cano and Woody. However, in the updated version 1703, although the Win 10 system can still see shared folders on the Win 7 systems, the reverse is no longer true. When I try to map from Win 7 system to a shared folder on Win 10 system, I get prompt for Win10 username/password.

On the Win 10 system/Advanced Sharing Settings:

      Private;  Turn on network discovery; Turn on File & Printer sharing;

      No homegroup.

When I try to map shared folder from Win 7 system, I am asked for password, even though shared folder is shared with Everyone. I am told that network folder specified is currently mapped using different name/password (not true.) To connect using different user name/password, disconnect any existing to this network share. (Does not help.)

      Thanks to you Windows experts.

I appreciate your patient support for the Windows ignoramuses  🙂

    • Woody,

Where in versioin 1607 can I find this:<span style=”color: #000000; font-family: ‘Helvetica Neue’, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;”> Windows Update link in 1607 that says something like “You can be one of the first to get the Creators Update”</span><span style=”color: #000000; font-family: ‘Helvetica Neue’, Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px;”> ?</span>

Perhaps I am going to the wrong URL, but the page I go to does not havc the option “Update Now.”

      Thanks.

    • May I ask h ow you got version 1703 update?

    • “Click Update & security. Click the link to Advanced options and check the box marked Defer Feature Updates. That puts you on the “Current Branch for Business”

      PK,

I don’t have “Defer Feature updates checked”. I will review the Computer World article you referenced. The issue must be Wushowhide. That is the only thing left. Also, in Services. doesn’t one have to enable “Windows Update” and “Background intelligent Transfer Service”?

BTW, does the version 1703 update (or any update) take place only on reboots or can it interrupt overnight work?

    • When the DEFCON number goes to 3, if you want to stay on 1607, you will need those two updates.”
Is there a catalog page to get those those updates?

    • PK,

As you and Woody have advised, I am willing to go from version 1607 to version 1703 but don’t see how to get that done. Will Windows automatically do that on 10/17/17 and is it safe to leave version 1607 unpatched till then? Your and Woody’s followers are stuck between an unpatched version 1607 and an impossible-to-get version 1703.

    • PK,

I went to Settings/Privacy but don’t see any that have to do with Windows update. What settings prevent update to version 1703? Woody must have given those settings to us at one point but how does one reverse those settings to allow update to version 1703?

You and Woody always provide the guide to the uninitiated but I can’t figure out how to get version 1703 based on any of your recent posts.

      Thanks, CMA

    • How does on set the Privacy Settings to go from version 1607 to version 1703? Thank you.
