    • in reply to: Another report of an unwelcome 1803 upgrade #211806

On two of my 4 systems with version 1709, Windows Update services will be turned on even if I have stopped and disabled it. Then, every few days, if I am away from the system for 4-5 hours, Windows will give a warning screen that an update will occur in 30 minutes or so. If I do not see that warning and take action by turning off Windows update service, the update (download and reboot) will occur.

    • So is there nothing to stop the feature update if one has version 1709?

    • Susan says “if you are on 1709 the wording will say Semi-Annual Channel. But Advanced for me shows only “Choose how updates are installed” but not when they are installed.

Thanks to PK and Bobby for advice. I have one system still on version 1703. I figured I should update that one. But Windows update is smarter than me. Even with diligent use of wushowhide, there was a “feature update (to version 1709).” Fortunately I figured out how to stop update in process and so got only a few updates to version 1703.

I was wondering if version 1709 (Build 16299.125) is safe to update yet?

    • in reply to: Patch Lady – proving that documentation is key #173208

It is great to have Patch Lady onboard helping Woody on this key issue of when it is safe to update Win 10, especially ver. 1709. It is better to be safe than sorry, better to be a little late than a little early. So we will watch here for Susan to give us the all clear, even if it takes a week or 2 or 3.

    • 12/11/17 is that last update I did to my Windows 10, version 1709 based on Woody’s recommendations. That must have been the 11/2017 update. Is that the last one that Woody recommended we do?

    • I don’t yet recommend installing the January Meltdown/Spectre patches from Microsoft just yet,
Woody, those of us with Win 10 ver 1709 are still awaiting your OK to update since 12/2017. The last update you OKed for Win 1709, if I’m not mistaken, was that of 11/2017.

“I have moved back to Firefos (57) now that my most important add-ons are available – AdBloc Plus, Disconnect, and NoScript.”

Why does everyone love NoScript when you have to give it full access to all your browsing data? Talk about a security risk; this is it!

“I for one remove the Phishing protection that I think someone here mentioned was using a third-party service.”
      Do you mean “Tracking Protection”?

New FF looks pretty good. However, I have the same Bookmarks issue I’ve always had with FF. When I import booksmarks from html file, all I get is a useless bookmarks folder “From Google Chrome”.

    • Woody, I see that you have just gone to “3” on Defcon. Which month’s updates are these that you say we should do? We already did the 10/2017 updates at the end of last month. When I check Windows updates today, nothing new comes up.

“you have read recent comments and run Disk Cleanup with the box for Windows Cleanup checked, possibly for the first time ever. That function will create that activity on the NEXT shutdown/start cycle while it cleans out what can become a very large amount of unneeded data. This does not explain the disabled services or empty history.”

Thanks for the detailed analysis. I believe that your correct guess hits the nail on the head. I was not aware that a Windows Cleanup can instigate what appears to be a normal Windows update cycle. That would also explain how that happened with the “Windows Update” service disabled and shut down.

On shut down, My Win 7 system  began a Windows update and completed (after 1 hard reset) on reboot. But I had two Windows services disabled: “Background Intelligent Transfer” & “Windows Update”. I don’t know how the update could have occurred.

After the update, I had Build # 7601. When I checked Update History, there was no history at all. Was this some kind of bogus malware update and should I try to restore to the last good Windows update?
