AskWoody PlusIs there any real difference between using OneDrive as a cloud backup (putting individual files there) and using the official Microsoft Backup service?
I tried to start the backup once and having a memory of the apps was already there in my Microsoft account (based on what I saw onscreen) and then they wanted to backup my files – but I already have them in the cloud, so I declined because that’s incurring more storage usage for no reason.
So, since Microsoft Account has my apps, is the backup service different than just using the cloud for files?
In case it might be helpful, Ask Leo has a written and recorded recent piece on this called: “The Problem With One Drive Backup”.
The script is here: https://askleo.com/the-problem-with-onedrive-backup/

AskWoody PlusSusan, this sentence in your post caught my eye:
I also don’t suggest Windows 10 (or 11) LTSC — it’s not available to the masses.
I’ve seen folks around the Web (including at least one here at AskWoody) write that they use LTSC. But my understanding of it is that this kind of license costs an arm and a leg and requires jumping through multiple hoops. So I’ve always wondered: how the heck do they get an LTSC edition on their computers?
One site for gamers on the web offers a Windows 10 2021 LTSC license for 20 computers for about $15. (This is likely the exact the kind of license that Susan has written about.)

AskWoody PlusWhen I set up my grandson’s Dell, I tried to use Acronis 2019 and I had to turn Riad off before the recovery USB would boot, then everything went OK.
I recommend you try it.

AskWoody PlusYou are right, it’s an Officejet not a Deskjet. (After all these years I still mix up their names.) I have been using the new driver you cited since it first came out. Worked fine on my Windows 10 machine but I have had to reinstall it a dozen times — or more — to keep working under Windows 11.
Does it install itself to a “WSD” port by avy chance?
Susan has a post here titled “WSD printer ports are evil”: https://www.askwoody.com/2024/wsd-printer-ports-are-evil/ and it says her personal preferece is to use a TCP/IP port instead. Could be worth checking into.

AskWoody PlusJust to add a possibly important item to the thread, I’ve had several HP’s “fail” on their lower case where the hinges attach, and one “help” is to, along with repairing, apply some lubricant to the hinges (I used WD-40). Then they move easier, more similar to when they were new, and are less likely to fracture the plastic again.

AskWoody PlusNovember 22, 2023 at 12:45 pm in reply to: Avery Dennison Design Pro 5 label software update #2604749Suddenly, the program stopped opening files. When run a label file, nothing happens, if you open the program itself and open the file in it, nothing happens either. I tried to roll back Windows updates, change the compatibility of the program, reinstall, including deleting program files in hidden folders. Nothing helps. Maybe someone has faced a similar problem and get solution or ideas?
DesignPro v 5.5.0708.0 W10 x64
I am running version 4.00.3311.0 of Design Pro on both Windows 10 and Windows 11 Professional. I just tested both installations and they opened my files just as they always have.
My installations are updated only through October, and they have NOT had the November Updates applied.
I’m pretty sure this version of Design Pro came from one of the links in post #2531415, above.

AskWoody PlusOctober 22, 2023 at 8:09 pm in reply to: Comparison Tool recommendation: Beyond Compare from Scooter Software #2596266Here! Here!
I’m not a developer, but just a “regular” user, and I’ve been using Beyond Compare since 2002 to syncronize data between computers at home.
Essentially I use it many-many times each day to send data files back and forth to each of my computers to cause all their data to be identical.
The price is nominal and is more than worth it to me many times over. It’s the first utility that I put on any new computer or installation.

AskWoody PlusI just experimented with it and it more or less vanished on its own after a second or two when I did the following:
Put the cursor in the unwanted row on page two.
Changed the font size to one point (1pt) by entering 1 in the font size drop-down, and pressing enter.
Hopefully this will work for you, but of course YMMV.

AskWoody PlusGreat thanks alot RetiredGeek. I would never have worked that out myself.
But I cannot delete page 2 even though it is completely blank.
FWIW, I’ve also at times had success getting rid of the blank page below a table by changing the font size in last line to 1 point (1pt). It depends on how much margin remains down there.

AskWoody PlusA repair install over the top retains your apps and data only if you so designate.
It gives you three options (change what to keep):
1. Keep you apps and data
2. Keep only your data
OR
3. Keep nothingPick the right one for you.
What exactly is meant by “apps”?
Is it only the ones from Microsoft, or would applications such as Revo, VLC, PhotoShop, etc. also survive?
Thanks in advance.

AskWoody PlusWhat is the benefit of using an “exotic” Chromecast device with a remote control vs. streaming from a PC that is connected to the TV?
The only advantages I can see of using the ‘exotic’ version would be; 1) If you don’t have a smart TV, it gives you those capabilities, and 2) If you do have a smart TV but its Apps are dated, or are not what you want/need, the ‘exotic’ version can provide these.
Separately, (and I realize you didn’t inquire about this), in the previous post I forgot to point out that the built-in Windows 10 & 11 ‘projection’ feature gives the additional advantage (vs Chromecast) of treating the “mirrored” display as monitor #2, which means it can be run in an “extended” fashion thus allowing one to have a particular program (screen) showing on a laptop and then a different program to be displaying on the TV (imagine checking your email while also streaming You Tube, and doing so does not interupt vatching of the video).
Also, I should have mentioned that the Windows 10 & 11 ‘projection’ (screen mirroring) feature is available through use of an Amazon Fire Stick independent of whether or not it has been built-in to the TV. The Fire Stick (like the ‘exotic Chromecast does), provides a person with smart TV Apps (but additionally, unlike the exotic Chromecast, provides a built in browser app).
FWIW, I don’t know whether or not the Win 10 & 11 ‘projecting’ (mirroring) of a screen through the Fire Stick treats the TV as a second (i.e. ‘extendable’) monitor.

AskWoody PlusIs Chromecast simply an intermediate app to transfer content from an internet data stream or data stored on a PC to a television or does the app contain data itself.
Say we have a Netflix subscription. We can log into Netflix using a PC and simply use a video cable to connect the computer to the TV and watch the program on the TV.
What is the advantage of a Chromecast connection other than being WiFi?
The are two “main” types of Chromecast devices, both connect to a TV’s HDMI port. (Look on Amazon)
The most simple kind of Chromecast is just a powered “dongle” which will “mirror” the screen contents of a computer or other electronic device like a smartphone or tablet. There are numerous sets of instructions of how to do each type, if you search. This is much the same as using a video cable, but as you posted, is wireless instead.
Then the more exotic Chromecast device, besides having the screen-mirroring capability, also comes with a remote control and provides access to “Apps” which provide smart-TV like functions. (While there are Netflix, YouTube, etc. apps, it should be noted here that there is NOT any “browser app” provided, so mirroring the browser from another device is necessary if you want to enter and explore URL’s.)
On both of the types of Chromecast devices, to mirror a COMPUTER’S screen reqires the use of the Google Chrome browser and (as long as the devices are on the same network), requires only a few “clicks”. (Note that during the connection “clicking” sequence, choices are provided to show either a browser ‘tab’, or the entire computer screen/contents.)
As a possible alternative, you may want to also explore the Windows 10 & 11 “native” screen mirroring which can be done with certain model TV’s. At the link below check out the secton titled “Wireless Projection over an Existing WiFi Network”. (FWIW, I personally find that Chromecasting is much-much more reliable than the process described in the link.)
