AskWoody LoungerFebruary 26, 2020 at 1:04 pm in reply to: The late Feb “optional, non-security, C/D Week” patch is out but only for Win10 version 1809 and 1709. Win8.1 preview is also out. #2171613UPDATE: I read where if you don’t keep up to date on the chip set updates they can impact your regular monthly updates. So I went ahead and tried to install the update and its telling me I’m already up to date, so that answers my question that I had. The chip set update is obviously not the right one for my PC, otherwise it would have installed. This was through Window Update.

CPU-Z is reading my CPU as Skylake only without all the other letters and numbers that are listed after Skylake in the KB article. Can someone shed some light on this ?

AskWoody LoungerDecember 4, 2019 at 2:32 pm in reply to: Born: Reported profile problems with the newly updated Firefox #2014730I just updated to version 71.0 and it totally trashed my user interface, all my custom tweaking is gone. I recovered with an image and all is back to normal. I won’t be updating again for a while. Kinda wonder if the folks at Mozilla aren’t taking update lessons from Microsoft. This isn’t the first time a Firefox update has trashed the browser. If anyone from Mozilla is reading this, how bout being a little more careful with those updates. Also, it seems like there is a Firefox update every other week lately. As the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 25, 2019 at 11:10 am in reply to: What do we know about the big, scary, exploited, emergency patched Internet Explorer security hole CVE-2019-1367? #1964719Windows 10, 1809. The local news this morning reported on the IE patch and went on to say that you needed to install it manually, as it was not available through Windows Update. If this is the case, and we need this patch, can someone provide a link to the catalog for it. Seem kinda strange if this is that important that it would not come down through WU.

AskWoody LoungerSeptember 1, 2019 at 4:01 pm in reply to: Patch Alert: Where we stand with the August 2019 patches #1931062Just for the heck of it, I installed the Aug. updates on Windows 10 1809 this morning. I also went ahead just to see what would happen, and installed KB 4486153 .Net 4.8. My Brother MFC-9130CW printer /scanner would no longer scan without bring up an error. I checked and my hardware and software was up to date. I uninstalled the .Net 4.8 and it’s working just fine. The advice not to install the .Net update was good advice. If you do install it, check your devices to see if they still work. If you do have problems, uninstalling will fix them. I also did my Windows 7 and all went well there also. ( Did not install the optional .Net update ) I imaged both PC’s before doing this experiment.

AskWoody LoungerAugust 24, 2019 at 9:24 am in reply to: Report: The new .NET updates break Veritas Backup Exec #1918060So ,is the recommendation to not install 4.8 still valid and if I understand correctly , go ahead with the cumulative updates to .Net when Woody gives the okay ?

AskWoody LoungerAugust 24, 2019 at 9:00 am in reply to: Report: The new .NET updates break Veritas Backup Exec #1918023Regarding the Aug. .Net update KB 4486153, which is not recommended to install. I noticed that I’m now being offered KB 4512192, a new cumulative update to .Net which includes 3.5, 4.7.2 and 4.8. If I don’t install 4.8, how is this going to impact my decision not to install 4.8? If 4.8 is not installed, will this break the install or fail to update the other .Net versions ? Should I hide both updates ?

AskWoody LoungerJuly 25, 2019 at 11:23 am in reply to: BlueKeep is almost here. Get your XP/Win7 systems patched! #1888494Windows 7 x64 SP1…I’m not showing KB4499164 in my installed updates. The catalog shows it as a monthly roll up. I’ve been doing group A monthly roll ups. Should I already have this ? I’m not showing it. My guess, is perhaps it was part of a monthly roll up with a different KB number ?

AskWoody LoungerJuly 18, 2019 at 12:55 pm in reply to: Are you being pushed from Win10 1803 to 1903? Tell me about it. #1876567A couple of weeks ago , I followed PKCano’s instructions for going directly from 1803 to 1809, skipping 1903. I have had no problems here and I set my Group Policy the same as I had it in 1803. I have not had 1903 offered at all. I set the Feature update defer setting to 365. I’m liking 1809 better than ever, because I have software that has never worked with any version of Windows 10 since 1511 that is working perfectly with 1809.

AskWoody LoungerNice ! I’m one that does not like change, I get used to something and it’s very annoying to have to get used to it again all over. I wish we had some choice in the matter. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. That goes for changes in the GUI also. Oh well, our opinions have and always will fall on Microsoft’s deaf ears

AskWoody LoungerJune 22, 2019 at 8:48 am in reply to: If you’re running Win10 Pro 1803 and you want to move to 1809 so you don’t get pushed to 1903, there’s good news #1854363Update: Booted up this morning and the PC froze up at the first screen. A restart using the power option in the lower right side, resulted in a successful boot. Looks like a few bugs remain in 1809 or it’s just my PC choking on it. I’m going to assume that MS changed 1809 dark and light themes as per my question above.
